Thursday Forecast

7:29AM

DAYS 1-5 (SEPTEMBER 8-12)…
As the low pressure area formerly known as Hermine finishes its spin-down and drifts across Cape Cod as a trough today, the humidity it brought into the region will hang around until a front crosses the region tonight. This front will produce only a few isolated showers and thunderstorms at most, and will drop the dew point but allow the heat to return on Friday. Another boundary from the north will drop down Friday night and early Saturday with a little area of high pressure to the north, turning the wind more to the northeast and east and cooling things down somewhat for Saturday, but this front will try to come back at night and then finally another cold front from the west will sweep it all offshore with again no more than a few showers by early Sunday. High pressure builds in later Sunday through Monday with fair weather.
TODAY: Areas of fog this morning. Mostly cloudy to partly sunny. Humid. Highs 75-83, coolest coast. Wind light variable with sea breezes.
TONIGHT: Variably cloudy. Isolated showers/thunderstorms. Humid. Lows 62-70. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Less humid. Highs 80-92, coolest Cape Cod. Wind W 10-20 MPH.
SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Lows 62-70. Highs 82-92, coolest South Coast.
SUNDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of showers morning. Lows 62-70. Highs 78-85.
MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows 55-62. Highs 75-82.

DAYS 6-10 (SEPTEMBER 13-17)…
Mainly dry, warm weather during this period.

DAYS 11-15 (SEPTEMBER 18-22)…
Mainly dry and warm pattern continues.

  1. Thank you, TK.

Gosh the sky looked threatening this morning just to the south and west of Boston. Alas, no rain.

  2. Short and sweet. Thank you TK.

Red Sox are in 1st place this morning. Let’s hope they can stay there. 😀

Another YUCK morning. Will the afternoon turn out better. We shall see.

Other than a couple of drops this morning, NO MORE rain over night.

  3. Boston Public Schools 1 – 12 begin today and Kindergarten begins on Monday.

Do all districts begin K on later dates?

  4. A gloomy start for the first day of school. Off the top of my head, I can recall only one cloudy first day from elementary through high school. It seemed that most every one was at least partly sunny. No thunder storms either that I can recall, not even after school once I got home. My first days almost always were beautiful weather wise and very rarely HHH. Of course, no district ever started in August back then.

Just for the record, I grew up in the 1960s/70s. 🙂

    1. ALL it did was INCREASE the commute time for everyone at the office.

So many extra vehicles on the road, including the road clogging school buses and then of course the pedestrian traffic tying up all intersections and even
      where there wasn’t an intersection.

      What a difference.

  5. VERY dark here but nothing on radar other than a tiny speck near Canton area.

Other than Hermine, this has still been a strange summer…can’t really explain it.

  6. Dp @ Logan = 68F

Most hurricanes BRING humidity ahead of them but leave it to Hermine to leave humidity in its wake instead of nice, refreshing air from Canada. While Hermine was here, dewpoints were in the low 50s. I give up trying to figure Hermine out…good riddance to her. 😉

    1. I think it has something to do with it discentigrating around the area so the humidity was kind of just dropped on us.

      1. Yes and early on there was sort of an occluded front (Storm was Extra Tropical at the time) that moved Northwestward by our area and just dumped the humidity upon us.

    2. I think another factor is that Hermine has been trapped within a huge upper level ridge. Outside of Hermine’s influence, it has been hot and humid north and west of us as seen by a 93F in Toronto yesterday. Our dewpoints may go up more tonight as they are running in the low 70s to our north and west.

More often than not, a trof with a cool, dry airmass is approaching New England as a tropical system gets steered just OTS. And the merging of the tropical system with the trof will deliver in a strong shot of cool air in its wake. Not to be this time, it’s just not the set up.

  7. It’s unbelievable how almost every time it’s dark and threatening it doesn’t rain in Boston. Or if it does it’s just a drop or two. It’s like the atmosphere has prostate issues in and around Boston.

  8. The Red Sox are indeed in sole possession of first place. Their starting pitching has significantly improved. I’m still concerned, though. They just finished playing two bad teams. The ones they’re facing from now on will not be bad, except for the Rays (but they play the Sox hard). It’s also a very, very tight race. Exciting to be sure. I love September and October baseball. What’s truly shocking to me is the fact that the Yankees are still in this thing. Joe Girardi is incredible. They’ve got pitching and a bullpen but limited hitting. Their chances are slim, but I would never, ever rule the Yankees out. While I don’t like them, I respect them more than any other team.

  9. I agree with your comments about Girardi. There is a lot you can get on for Girardi he over manages but his teams are competitive even the Marlins team he managed. They were sellers at the trade deadline and now look at them 4.5 out of 1st 2.5 out of the second wild card. Finally there is some youth on this Yankees team and Gary Sanchez could not have had any better start than he did.

  10. Both New York baseball teams playing meaningful September baseball games and that did not look like that was going to happen in early to mid August.

  11. Only in New England can people bitch about the manager, line up, pitching, etc., when their baseball team is in first place 😉
The Sox play in one of the tougher divisions in the AL year in and year out. Right now, only 4 games in the loss column separate 4 teams.

AL Central: Tigers are 6 games back of the Indians. The rest have no chance (i.e. 9 games back, 14, and 29 games back.

AL West: Astros are 8 games back of the Rangers. The rest are 12, 20, and 22 back.
    Just a little perspective.

(and yes I agree, Farrell is bad)

    1. And the 2 wild card leaders are in the AL East: Toronto and Bal’mer.
The Yankees are only 2 back. The only other team with a chance at the WC are Houston and Detroit.
The point is, 4/5 AL east teams are in the hunt. The AL east beats the crap out of each other.

    2. (and yes I agree, Farrell is bad)

Well, then we are in Agreement. That’s all I am saying.

Other than that fact, I am really enjoying this pennant race. 😀

    3. Very true. It has always been that way. It is also one reason Williams had such a love hate relationship with Boston fans.

  12. I love that second wild card to bring more teams in to play. There is have been talk three times from AL East get into playoffs. I disagree I think two make it since as you stated Blackstone the AL east beats the crap out of each other.

    1. The so called “expert” consensus is that 3 teams of the top 4, Boston, Toronto, Baltimore and New York make the playoffs.

    2. I can’t stand a one game play off. Brings back BAD memories of
our 1978 play off with the Yankees and Bucky Dent!

      1. For the plug nickle that it is worth, I prefer when the two top teams from each division play. I’ve never liked playoffs nor agreed with any teams other than top teams playing for the title.

        1. I don’t have a problem with the Wild Card system as long as there is “at least” a 3 game series. None of this one
          game Baloney.

Baseball is still much better in that regard than Hockey and Baseball where Mediocre teams routinely make the playoffs. Even happens occasionally in Football, but generally the best teams are in it.

  13. We’ll see what happens this weekend. Sox play 3 with Toronto.
Things could look different Sunday night.

  14. Big weekend series against the Jays. Toronto’s got to be peeved at being swept by the Yankees. Will they flash some anger against the Sox? We’ll see.

Agree, Blackstone, that Boston fans (myself included) harp on the negative. This said, there may not be a city in this country where fans care more about their teams (multiple, in all major sports). I think that being critical is a way of saying we care.

    1. It probably doesn’t surprise you that I have a different perspective on that 🙂 Spectators here seem to forget that athletes are people. For the most part, they work hard to do their best for their team and their fans. When they are having a hard time, it just doesn’t make sense to boo them as if they are struggling on purpose. Boston fans particularly only seem to like their teams when they win for them rather than just spending time enjoying their talents and the sport they provide.

      1. Vicki, we usually are in agreement, but here I disagree.
The amount of money those guys are paid, especially in relation
to the what the common fan earns, sets them up for criticism.

For example, if some player is earning 20 million a year and they are not performing, I don’t feel badly for them at all if they
get soundly booed by the fans. IF they take that kind of money, then then best perform or suffer the consequences. It comes
        with the territory.

        😀

        1. I cut my teeth on stories of how williams felt when he was giving his all and yet couldn’t figure out the problem. His view was that if someone is giving his all and hits a slump then it is demeaning to boo and does anything but help. His view was you support someone even if they are in a slump. No matter what a person is paid, he or she will never be perfect. I don’t understand how anyone could expect them to be.

But then he also asked to have his salary cut on his worst year.

I’m looking at it from the players side. It is one of the lessons that shaped a lot of how I feel about things….even down to finding fault with weather. When you watch someone with the talent williams had actually hurt by his fans, it is a powerful lesson …especially for a kid.

    2. Yup. I don’t expect the Sox to win all 3, but I would like them to win
2 of the 3. But, even if they win 1 of 3, they’re still in good shape. They
HAVE to avoid being swept. Not only would that put them 2 games behind, but I can’t imagine the damage to the team psyche.

  15. October 2, 1978, Fenway Park. I was there. 13 years old. Huge fan, as in Trumpian huuuuge. Went to so many games that year. Was officially a bleacher creature. For 2 bucks you could get in. For 35 cents you got a coke, 75 cents a hot dog, and 50 cents an ice cream. For the one-game playoff I was lucky enough to get a ticket from a bouncer who was a friend of my brother’s. He (Mr. O’Rourke) was so incredibly kind that he arranged for Carlton Fisk and Dennis Eckersley to sign a ball for me. He brought me the ball in the bottom of the 7th, as a consolation of sorts. I was almost inconsolable. Holding back tears after the Dent homerun. Jackson’s homer was like a shot of novocaine, Piniella’s blind grab on a hop of Remy’s shot to right field (limiting it to a single) made me nauseous, and Yaz’s final out on a pop-out to Nettles was the final nail in the coffin. I was whimpering like a dog who’s lost a fight. But, I did have (and still do) a ball autographed by two of my favorite players.

    1. Nice. Awesome to have that autographed ball!

They allowed us a TV at work that day, so I was able to peek at the game
      here and there.

YAZ’s final at bat against Goose Gossage was PATHETIC. For such a great hitter, I clearly expected more than that. See, here I go again, being tough on them. How about a liner to the 2nd baseman or line drive to the Centerfielder?
At least a “loud” out and not a whimper. He was OVERMATCHED and didn’t have a prayer. I could see it when he got up there.

Not that this was the reason they lost.

      1. I have always wondered if that was Yaz’s pitch, but JUST got under it. IIRC it looked like a perfect pitch to hit.

        1. I still think he was way overmatched. To me (and I played
a ton of baseball) it looked like he didn’t have a prayer, not that he just missed it.

But who knows, I am getting older and 1978 was long ago and I could be getting fuzzy about it.

          😀

          1. Watched that game at the Stadium Bar and Grille (corner of South St and Summer St)..long gone now. Had myself a few beers and almost got into a fight with a Yankee fan (who was a bartender at a place across the street at 10 High St)….ahhh the memories 🙂

    2. Yay was one of the greats. Very exciting to have an autographed ball. I am ashamed to say that my brother and I had a bunch of Ted’s autographed cards and we used them in the spokes of our bikes. No one knew then. You probably don’t want to know how many times I’ve kicked myself.

  16. Vicki, You are right. Boston fans can be cruel. But, they do know the game. They understand the ins and outs of baseball, hockey, basketball, and football, in ways that players from opposing teams marvel at. Please keep in mind, too, that Philadelphia fans are even more savage to players and teams. What’s more, they’re opportunistic. Bad teams don’t draw at all.

  17. Explanation about the humidity…

Hermine was of course born in and embedded in a tropical air mass. Even when it crossed land in the Southeast and emerged back into the waters off the East Coast it was still in that air mass. When it slowed down south of New England we were on the other side of a front, in a cooler and relatively dry air mass at the time. Hermine was not a storm that raced up the coast like many other ones have, be they direct hits or not. She went “post tropical” but just sat to the south. So the initial effects were felt while we were in a cool air mass. Finally that air mass let go and the result was to advect the air surrounding the low that was Hermine into the area. It’s nothing more than just mixing of fluid. Now, in order to push the muggies out, we need a front, and that’s coming through tonight. Tomorrow: hot & drier.

Editing the post now for a discussion.

  18. I may have mentioned this previously, but the Red Sox have been extremely fortunate that none of the other contenders went on a long win streak after the All-Star break. Usually, there is that one team that goes nuts and takes control, but this year the other teams are pretty much doing the same as the Sox (win one/lose one, etc.)

  19. Regarding the Sox, I think it’s just a matter of getting into the playoffs. Once it starts, all bets are off and I think they’ll have as good a shot as anyone. There’s no guarantee they make it in if they have a late September swoon though. I think they’re a poorly managed but generally talented team. Good pitching lately has been key; if that holds up, they’ll be fine.

Meanwhile, not to sound like Charlie, but opening night of the NFL is tonight… looking forward to the season a lot. Nervous about the Pats chances but it will definitely be interesting to see how things work out.

And lastly, some pretty nasty storms over New York today… but alas, they’ll largely fade out as they push east tonight. Tomorrow will feel like mid-summer.

  20. I can’t wait till 4:25pm on Sunday to see how my Cowboys with Dak Prescott at QB do against the Giants.

  21. More Patriot’s controversy…..

    Gronk’s injury
    Jimmie G’s Brady comments

Never a dull moment down there.

    1. Gronk will be fine.
J.G. meant nothing by those comments and the media is making drama out of NOTHING. I have never wanted to collectively smack an industry so badly.

      1. Either you hold them and I smack or I’ll hold them and you smack….your choice since it was your idea 🙂

  22. All that said 😉 I came to say the storms hitting the far NW corner of MA look to have strengthened at least for now

    1. I don’t think we’ll have much blocking at least through mid winter. Probably quite a progressive pattern.

        1. I don’t think there will be too many storms to the south because of a weaker subtropical jet. The polar jet will probably be very progressive but some times north, some times south. So we’ll have a handful of storms that may travel over or south of here but probably with limited moisture, if the pattern evolves the way I think it will.

  23. So far Sutton has nothing. Either my rain gauge is stuck in second gear of we have had 0.04 three days in a row. At the moment I’m thinking second gear

    1. Slow transition to drier today. I should have mentioned that but will do so in the update I’m doing now… 🙂
