Friday Forecast

7:15AM

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 7-11)
A broad and weakening area of low pressure leftover from yesterday’s unsettled weather will drift eastward across New England today and Saturday. During the passage of this feature it will be a little milder today but with clouds returning and a few showers possible, then slightly cooler with some clouds on Saturday. By Sunday through Tuesday, this will be replaced by a warmer southwesterly flow of air as high pressure situates itself off the East Coast and the jet stream lifts northward over southeastern Canada.
TODAY: Partly sunny morning. Mostly cloudy with scattered rain showers afternoon. Highs 48-55. Wind SW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.
TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Rain showers ending from west to east. Lows 34-41. Wind 5-15 MPH.
SATURDAY: Variably cloudy. Highs 46-52. Wind NW 10-20 MPH, higher gusts.
SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 36-43. Wind W 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.
SUNDAY: Sun and high clouds. Highs 47-55 South Coast, 56-63 elsewhere. Wind SW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.
MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows in the 40s. Highs upper 40s Nantucket, 50s South Coast, 60s to lower 70s elsewhere.
TUESDAY: Partly cloudy. Lows upper 40s to middle 50s. Highs upper 60s to upper 70s, cooler South Coast.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 12-16)
Cold front may bring rain showers early April 12 then drier and cooler through April 13. Disturbance brings a shower risk April 14 then drier cooler still through April 15. May warm up again at the end of the period.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 17-21)
Low confidence forecast with a possible boundary nearby and a battle between warm air to the south and much cooler air in eastern Canada probably resulting in wide-ranging temperatures and episodes of unsettled weather. Will watch to see how this evolves.

  1. Thanks TK.

Let’s keep Wednesday somewhat dry as the mrs and I have date night at the Red Sox game.

  2. Sad news out of Maine as a meteorologist went missing was found dead last night. He committed suiciude.

  3. Good morning and thank you TK for the Friday update.
I awoke to cloudy miserable skies. Here I sit in the office looking out at bright sunshine. I know the sky will be filled with clouds by this afternoon, but it sure is nice right now.

    1. This afternoon’s cloudiness will be of the southwest wind mild surface cool aloft variety though, not the east wind stratus invasion kind.

      1. Yes, I am aware.

Last night Eric said those clouds would pop some showers
        with possible small HAIL.

        Do you agree?

        thanks

          1. I figured. Wonder why Eric mentioned it on air.
            He sounded most believable.

I KNOW you will be correct. 😀

            1. He likes to push the extreme senario a bit more than someone like Harvey. Nothing really wrong with that as long as it’s done responsibly.

  4. Was out for a bit. Clouds are fascinating today.

Hoping for dry weather at least into Wednesday. Deck is being dismantled today and will begin reconstruction Monday-Tues/Wed and then the patio. I’m very excited although one might wonder why since I spend so little time outside in spring/summer/fall and even winter 😉

    1. I’m going to assume you are kidding, given my answer never changes.

Take the latest recorded measurable snow on record for a given location. Use that as your “end date” if you must have one. 😛

          1. Not sure which blizzard I like more.
Nothing like a DQ blizzard on a hot Summers day. 😀

                1. You MUST try one!!

I make up my own flavor and my local DQ usually accommodates me.

This is my all time favorite:

Butterscotch and marshmallow. (Not the butterscotch dip, but the gooey delectable stuff they put on a butterscotch Sundae. I guess they call it sauce or topping)

          2. i do not like blizzards but i like my lemon slush…Anyone been to the ice cream place by griggs farm in billerica will u derstand the struggle

    1. We had some sun this am but mostly dark clouds this afternoon. Has looked threatening on and off but nothing happens.

  5. The sky is too cluttered to allow enough vertical growth for hail. The only chance is a little kicker trough coming along in the very late afternoon to early in the evening west to east but even that doesn’t impress me. Wider areas of sunshine would have aided the hail threat.

      1. That is your kicker trough. Not really enough to do much. Brief moderate showers.

  6. Thanks, TK.

Thank goodness we got to see glimpses of the sun this morning, because it’s been a really dreary period with the exception of Monday and last Thursday. Let’s see what the weekend brings. Looking more promising, but in April at the coast I’m ALWAYS skeptical.

  7. Already seeing people on social media lamenting about how questionable the Sox are. I really hope it’s a joke. They were never going to go 162-0. It’ll be more like 100-62. 😉

      1. It will happen at least a couple dozen times this season, but it won’t stop them from having a good season.

    1. There is one in Quincy on Rt. 3A just North of the Draw Bridge connecting Quincy to Weymouth. NOT far from Dorchester. 😀

        1. We have 2 in Brockton, one on the west side on Route 123, in between George’s Cafe (fantastic Italian) and the Fairgrounds, and the other on the North Side, right on the Avon line (about 5 minutes from the StormHQ World Headquarters).

While I do like DQ, I’d take Cold Stone Creamery over it every day.

      1. And now all of it has seemingly evaporated! Just a batch of showers hanging way out around I-91, barely moving at all.

  8. This is going to be another long baseball season, isn’t it? And guess who’s causing all the stress…Mr. Farrell you should have been fired 2 years ago! Yet another atrocious move today not bringing in Kimbrel who had a 2.41 ERA in save situations last season and 1.60 in save situations over his career. We’re just letting him sit on the bench, misusing him when we do use him, and meanwhile one of the guys we gave up for him named Manuel Margot hit 2 home runs today batting leadoff. What was the point of getting him if he’s just going to ride the bench? I have no idea how good Farrell is in the clubhouse but these in-game decisions are things anyone watching on TV can make. I definitely remember him helping blow 5 or 6 games last season through poor manegerial decisions. This team may have a ton of talent but nothing’s going to happen in the playoffs unless Farrell wisens up or is fired.

    1. AGREE 100%
Farrell is an IDIOT and the most inept in game manager I have ever seen.
Even worse than Valentine!!! and that is saying something!

    1. Keep them up Dr. S! I see Ch. 4 has next Friday absolutely bone chilling while the others fairly mild albeit wet. I would be curious as to which model has us so cold.

      1. It may be that no model has us that cold and he is daring to make a meteorological decision, albeit 7 days in advance. I cannot tell you the amount of forecasts I have made that have #’s on them not on any “model” and they end up verifying better than said models did. Forecasting via meteorology is so much more than choosing which model you think is closest and going with it. Once upon a time we didn’t have forecast models, and as SAK has mentioned many times, he and I learned how to forecast very much the same way that forecasters did with very limited model guidance, or even using none at all in some cases, which forces one to pay a lot more attention to things that others take for granted for being spoiled by the technology.

When you learn forecasting the “raw” way, you’ll screw up – a lot, but that will force you to learn why it didn’t work out and pay far greater attention to large, medium, small, and even micro-scale details about how and why weather works the way it does. In time, this makes you a much better forecaster.

    2. Please keep it going. I stopped watching TV news years ago because its so agenda driven, flawed in so many ways and frankly just plain boring. Your post is very helpful Thanks!

          1. I find it hilarious, which is why I chose the name after seeing the segment on Ren and Stimpy 25 years ago for my BBS handle. 😉

            1. Love the compilations. They are hugely appreciated.

I cannot, however, mention them in front of any grandchildren now. The lecture me on saying stupid 🙂

        1. I think if Dr. S changed his name, he wouldn’t be Dr S. It took me a bit to figure it out, but it fits his great, quirky personality and makes me smile.

  9. Vicki I was thinking of you when I was watching The Masters yesterday and saw Fred Couples only three strokes of the lead going into today’s third round. If I remember correctly you like Fred Couples. It is good to see back playing The Masters after missing it last year with back issues.

    1. JJ. You gave me a smile. I couldn’t watch the masters last year. It was the golf highlight of Macs year so it was just too hard for me. I made myself watch yesterday to see how freddie was doing. It was hard for me at first but I was glad I watched. And freddie has been my favorite always. You have a great memory. Enjoy the weekend watching. I will also.

  10. Good morning…

Current Ocean temperature at Boston Buoy, 16 nm East of Boston:

    Water Temperature (WTMP): 40.3 °F

It may have been way above average most of the Winter, but that cold March did us
in for this Spring. It is now April 8th, and if memory serves me well, this temperature
is now BELOW average just when it is absolutely the WORST possible time of year for it to be below average.

The 4/1-4/15 Average for Boston Harbor is 45 degrees. That current reading
    is 39.9.

I can’t seem to locate averages for Boston Buoy. But is Boston Harbor is 5 degrees
below average, then I would Imagine Boston Buoy is also below average.

    https://www.nodc.noaa.gov/dsdt/cwtg/all.html

    1. Unisys SST and Reynolds SST analysis show widespread 1 to a few 2C anomalies below average along the New England coastline.

It also shows El Niño is returning. Just what the atmosphere needs, an additional source of warmth.

  11. Vicki Freddie is in the mix going into the weekend. If he stays in the top ten when the tournament is over on Sunday that will be great for him.
I am upset Mickelson made couple bogey’s on the closing holes after getting with in one shot of the lead and now even par four back.

    1. I was really happy he will play the weekend. His shot on 18 was amazing yesterday. I was screaming for it to go in. So close. I was disappointed for Phil also. He will get it back. My almost four year old grandson likes watching him since he is a lefty too.

  12. I though the shot Freddie hit on 18 when it caught that slop was going in for an eagle. It just missed by a few inches.
For Phil and he is going to be turning 47 in June he is not going to have too many more opportunities for getting a win in one of the four majors. I am so rooting for him to win the U.S. Open so he will earn the career grand slam. In 2006 U.S. Open if he did not have that meltdown on the 18th hole on Sunday he would have won instead of Geoff Ogilvy.

    1. I would have to hope for Freddie to win but Phil would be my next choice. Poor Phil seems to have been plagued by meltdowns and risky shots throughout his career.

  13. New post!
Didn’t really make any changes, and it’s not mentioned in the forecast, but don’t be surprised if someone sees mix or flakes at the end of next week. The atmosphere will be capable of doing it briefly, if things play out the way I think they may.
