Friday Forecast

4:30AM

DAYS 1-5 (JULY 14-18)
An unseasonably cool northeasterly air flow continues today and then shifts more to the southeast and south during Saturday. During this time some energy will still be coming through above from west to east. This will result in a very slow improvement in the weather. By Sunday, the feel of summer will be back, but there will be yet another disturbance, albeit weak, moving in from the northwest, so I can no longer forecast full sun and zero shower risk, and this will also be the story for the beginning of next week.
TODAY: Cloudy. Scattered showers, mainly southern MA, CT, RI. Highs 64-72. Wind NE 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Cloudy. Isolated showers, mainly southern MA, CT, RI. Lows 58-64. Wind E 5-10 MPH.
SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy with isolated to scattered showers morning. Partly sunny with isolated showers afternoon. Highs 68-78, coolest coast. Wind light SE.
SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 60-67. Wind light S.
SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Slight risk of isolated showers. Highs 77-86, coolest South Coast. Wind S to SW 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY: Partly cloudy. Slight risk of isolated showers. Lows in the 60s. Highs from the upper 70s to middle 80s, coolest South Coast.
TUESDAY: Partly cloudy. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms. Lows in the 60s. Highs from the upper 70s to middle 80s, coolest South Coast.

DAYS 6-10 (JULY 19-23)
Fairly typical mid summer weather. Warm to hot with a few episodes of isolated to scattered showers/thunderstorms, but rain-free most of the time.

DAYS 11-15 (JULY 24-28)
A similar pattern is expected to continue heading into late July. There are subtle signs that high pressure may strengthen even more and result in more heat.

  1. I am further delaying any comment shut-down. More on this later.

For now please remember the basic blog rules…
Discuss, express opinions, ask questions, but choose words carefully. Do not insult and disrespect. If you do not get along with somebody, simply do not communicate with them.

We have quite an audience here, the vast majority of which do not post, but merely read. This includes my family and close friends, many extended family and friends, people that I have never and may never meet, and some rather high profile people that we would all know. I thank you and all of them for being here!

And yes, it’s a weather blog, and I prefer weather to be the main topic, but a stray off-topic to sports or news from time to time is ok as well.

    Carry on!

  2. Good morning and thank you TK.

Looks like it may be just a tad milder today, meaning Boston is not likely
to break the low maximum high temperature for today. We shall see.

    1. Currently 63 at the airport. I believe the Low Maximum High record
for today is 66. So far today’s Max is 64.

I suppose we could make a run at it, but I think we’ll creep towards 70. May not make 70, but I feel Boston will eclipse 66. Thoughts? Am I all wet?

        1. Is that the record? OR is that your predicted high
          for Logan?

You’re the expert, but just going out this
morning, it just had the feel of it getting a bit milder
to me. Nothing scientific, just responding to what I feel and sense.

I’ll be watching the numbers all day.

          😀

  3. Darn potent backdoor yesterday. In the 60’s and the temps DROPPED during the day, IN JULY. 88 in HFD, 64 in ORH. That’s potent.
Hopefully summer comes back soon. Plenty of time for late September/early October…..IN TWO MONTHS!!! This is about as bad as 48 degrees and misery mist in early June. Not quite, but almost as putrid given is July 14th.

    1. 90+ potential Wed-Fri next week but could be shut off by way of another back door if the GFS is right.

I’m leaning toward the ECMWF idea, which is a hotter scenario.

      1. Im looking for the last half of the week of the 21st and beyond. Half of next week and the first half of the following week i’ll be in Wilmington, NC. Where real summer is, thank goodness. AHHHHH

      2. SHHH….

I know others enjoy the HHH weather, but for my wife’s sake
I’d enjoy the BDF. My wife LOVED yesterday’s front. LOVED it.
She’d gladly take 59 degrees in July. Me, I’d rather 85 and DRY.
You can KEEP the HHH weather. 😀

  4. I have shorts and flip flops on today, but with a hoody, 🙂
Little early for my October attire.

  5. Thanks TK !

In the car last night, I’ll admit to turning the temp dial more towards the heat than the cool. To be fair 🙂 , it was raining, chilly and I was finishing an ice cream and was frozen.

  6. As cool as 2009 was, I don’t recall ever mention of any max low/high temps. I would be curious if we ever came close on some occasions that particular summer.

  7. Still 63 at the airport. That temperature isn’t budging over there.

I’m wondering if the temp at 11:59:59 PM Might top the 66 record low Max???

    1. I wonder if even though the rain is weakening and sliding to the southeast, it’s probably symbolic of the column moistening slightly again and thus, sfc temps won’t budge as there is a slight difference btwn the temp and dew point. Also, the thicker higher and middle clouds should work against the Suns radiation for some time.

      1. Rain sure looks to MISS boston. It remains very overcast with very little brightening. I am hoping it at least brightens
a bit as the rain area slides SE and passes us by.

        We shall see.

        1. Based on TK’s forecast and some simulated radars I’ve seen for tomorrow (Saturday), it’s probably wise to expect some rain showers tomorrow during 8-5. Good chance it’s not a washout, but some showers and some dry periods in there as well.

  8. I’m up a whopping 0.2 degrees to 61.5 in the last half hour. Pathetic.
    NE wind at 5mph.
DP is right around 61. That’s the only thing that’s keeping it tolerable. I can imagine the chill if the DP was in the low 50’s. Good lord.

  9. Peaking at nasa worldview, summer wildfires have increased significantly in Alaska. A good part of that state is covered with atmospheric smoke. Some of the obs even are reporting smoke.

A smaller area may have broken out in the Manitoba/Alberta area and as best I can tell from today’s visible, a small plume of smoke runs from northeast Minnesota to James Bay.

So, once we return to summer next week and steering current dependent, don’t be surprised by episodes of hazy skies and red sunrises/sunsets.

  10. This “summer” is exactly why we stopped booking beach vacations in New England long ago. It’s a risky proposition at best.

To spend thousands and thousands of dollars for this sucks (for most)

    1. August and early September are your best bets regarding beach plans. Unfortunately, society’s obsession with rushing seasons has us out of summer mode and immersed in the beginning of school, pumpkin flavored everything, and holiday shopping by August 20, so we lose the last 4 weeks of actual summer to impatience. Too bad.

      1. Agreed. Our collective ADHD when it comes to tripping over each other to be the first to switch to the next commercial display at Target (et. al) despite the wide seasonal and calendar mismatch is OUT OF CONTROL.

We’ve done this to ourselves people.

    2. This is exactly why we go to NC or SC in late June, early July. 80+ degree water, mostly sunny with a pop up thunderstorm. Rarely have we lost an entire day to rain.

      1. We’ve been doing the exact same thing for probably ten years now. We actually came close to changing our mind this year until i reminded everyone that it will result in three days of sweathshirts minimum and chattering teeth for those brave enough to swim. We ended up skipping this year to save for Disney for next year. We did sandbridge Virginia last year

        1. We skipped last year for Disney. We went the 1st week of November last year. Stayed at the Beach Club by the back gate at Epcot. 9 days, 8 nights. Deluxe dining plan. 4 days at magic kingdom, 2 days at Epcot, 1 at AK, and 1 at HS. But we had a park hopper pass and went back to HS and Epcot a few times. EXPENSIVE vacation.
Went to the beach this year. Next year too. Disney cruise in 2021. Got to save some more for that one.
We go to Wilmington, NC for the beach

  11. School starts so early now in August that an extended week+ vacation isn’t doable anymore. And..the corporate world kind of gets back into “fall-lets-get-back-to-work-full-time mode by mid august. So yea, in another month, its back to school/work mode and all things Fall when the reality is there’s a good 6 weeks of summer left.

  12. I agree with all of the above and the general idea that yesterday’s and today’s weather in eastern New England is not ideal for July and is especially tough if your shelling out big bucks.

I do however, think there is opportunities to make the best of it in New England.

Depending on where your at, there are things to do on these very cool days (it does help when it’s not raining)

    1) on cape cod, you have the bike trail, which is being connected further and further every year. You have many nature trails and other outdoor things that are perfect for cool cloudy days. I think you can go up and down the New England coast to each region and find that there are fun things to do that are great in cloudy, cool weather.

    2) for camping enthusiasts, one or 2 cool days are perfect. Today begs to build and have a day long campfire and huddle around it. “Normal” July weather and forget it, a fire is the last thing I want to be near.

    3) personally, I get to a point where I’ve taken in too much sun or my wife and kids have gotten too much sun and we almost need a cloudy, cool day to get a break. Because if it’s sunny, we wouldn’t take that break.

So again, I totally understand what is being said above and sometimes share in that frustration. But I’ve found once you have to deal with it, sometimes it can provide other fun opportunities that you wouldn’t get to if the weather had you at the beach or pool every day of a vacation.

    1. You didn’t mention golf and/or fishing.

Today is a PERFECT day for fishing and any day is perfect for golf. I have even played in 10 degree weather. Wear parker, time for shot take it off and let er rip, put parker back on. Easy peasy.

I wish I took today OFF to go fishing.

    2. I agree, Tom. How much easier to mow the lawn on a cool, cloudy day. Even better is going to a place like Halibut Point with crashing waves and salt air and a warm jacket.

But like Philip, I would rather have sunshine.

      1. Neat. I had never heard of halibut point (state park), but looking at pictures of it now. Looks nice, although I wouldn’t go near the quarry 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

        1. The quarry is right next to a grassy spot near the visitor center and has a fairly safe walking path along one side. Easy to take pictures without getting too close. A bit of caution is needed perhaps with inattentive kids but it’s a beautiful place, just far enough away to muffle the sounds of traffic and hear the sounds of nature instead.

  13. I don’t bike, I don’t hike. Way too fat and out of shape form both. Eve when i was in shape, the idea of riding a bike or walking around in the woods never appealed to me. I hate both. And camping? Id rather stick pins in my eye balls. My idea of camping is a 4 star hotel, with a heated pool and swim up bar. 🙂
I’ll grant you golf is ok when its cool, but id rather have 80 and sunny.

That’s why I refuse to spend one dime to vacation on cape cod or the islands. My vacation dollars ares spent where i can guarantee 80 plus degree weather, winter or summer. I would never ever spend a penny to go where its cold for a vacation. I loathe skiing or anything to do with cold.

    1. 🙂 🙂

There really is no happy medium with camping. Haven’t found anyone who is luke warm to it. Either love it or hate it.

      1. I can’t stand camping. I hate it with all of my heart and soul.
I want nothing to do with it. I like visiting the “wilderness”, but as Blackstone stated, NOT without my creature comforts…

  14. To all of my friends here at WHW. I received the most beautiful wind chime that you all sent in memory of my dad. I was literally speechless when I opened the package. As I said to some on Facebook a little bit ago, a more perfect gift does not exist. My dad’s love for weather was mentioned in my brother’s eulogy and I could not be more proud that my love for weather came from such an amazing man. This gift touched me more than you will ever now. I can not wait to get home from work and sit and listen to the chimes. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

    1. Hope you and your family are doing well, Sue, and that every day is a little easier!

    2. I pray that the chimes bring you a bit of peace, knowing that your dad is never further from you than the wind or a gentle breeze. You are a dear friend to all of the Woods Hill Weather family.

  15. I’ve never understood the cape thing. Wayyyy too crowded, over priced, lousy weather. Nantucket or the Vinyard in August, ok. But for the money spent I’d rather go south.
For a day trip on a good day, Hampton beach can’t be beat.

    1. Well , with a house on Nantucket sound in Chatham , life is pretty good on the cape of cod. Parents bought the house in 1961. My mother and father have passed away. My family will be selling. I will truly miss what has been a huge part of my life….. So I beg to differ !!

      1. I am sorry that you have suffered those losses and have to say goodbye to a place that obviously is very important to you. Not easy.

      2. Aiden, how blessed you are to have years of memories. I am sorry for your loss and to hear that your home will be sold. We were never lucky enough to own a home but I do have a beach where I have been going since I was one and now a fourth generation of my family is making its own memories. I hope you can continue to visit a place you clearly love very much!!!

    2. I know many people that go to the Cape regularly and they have told me the worst thing about it is the traffic in and out, but being there isn’t so bad at all other than the occasional bad card draw on the weather. But even then there are indoor places to visit. My uncle and his girlfriend owned a house there for many years so most of my cape visits were to that place. They’ve both since passed away.

I do completely agree about Hampton Beach though. That’s my favorite day-trip or evening-trip beach.

  16. I guess if you own a house. Personally I’d rather spend the money on a house that’s sits on Kure Beach, NC

  17. Currently 66 at Logan. 😀
One more degree. C’mon Logan. perhaps some jets can point their exhaust towards
    the thermometer. 😀

  18. Cape cod has been my summer playground since I was 6 months old, I love the beaches on the cape, more so than the north shore and new hampshire. One the water is warmer.2 you can surf and skim board. 2, the cape can be a day trip or a week long trip. If you know the ins and outs of the cape it is no more expensive than Hampton if not cheaper. The exception is Nantucket and even then thats not that bad. Traffic can be bad, thats why you do not go on a Saturday morning or Friday night. you go Friday morning or Saturday evening for a week trip, and wait until after 8pm for your trip back. Hampton is fun if your with friends, not when you are with family )besides for my brothers. 😉 The cape is fun with friends and family not to mention a great camping and biking location. biked the entire cape a few times.

    1. I will say the view I currently have here at the field station would probably be in the amount in a few millions depending on the house

      1. ps, most times when I am going down to the cape, takes me an hour and a half to get down there.

  19. Aurora forecast is for conditions that may produce a display in the next few days.

    1. I’d say just go ahead. Today is not without risk, but showers will be isolated to at most scattered. Threat exists all day. Just go ahead and hope for the best!

  20. Logan may have made it to 67 but my bet is the neighborhoods averaged more like 64-66. JPD, what was your high temp?

    1. Most of the local ob stations were recording 67-69, being slightly away from the direct ocean air. It was coolest right on the shoreline.
