Wednesday Forecast

12:41PM

DAYS 1-5 (AUGUST 2-6)
The next 4 days we will be in a warm/humid southerly air flow with high pressure offshore and a trough to the west. The risk of showers and thunderstorms is a little higher today as a disturbance moves through, and again Saturday as a front approaches from the west. The two days in between will see more isolated activity. Sea breeze boundaries each day can also be a focus for some developing showers and storms. Overall, this will be largely a rain-free several days, but when it does rain in any given location, some very heavy downpours may occur.
THIS AFTERNOON: Variably cloudy. Scattered showers/thunderstorms, some with downpours and possible small hail. Humid. Highs 78-83 South Coast, 83-88 elsewhere. Wind S 5-15 MPH with some east coastal sea breezes.
TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Isolated showers/thunderstorms early. Patchy fog. Humid. Lows 65-72. Wind light S.
THURSDAY: Partly cloudy. Isolated afternoon showers/thunderstorms. Humid. Highs 78-83 South Coast, 83-88 elsewhere. Wind S 5-15 MPH but some east coastal sea breezes.
THURSDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Patchy fog. Humid. Lows 65-72. Wind light S.
FRIDAY: Partly cloudy. Isolated afternoon showers/thunderstorms. Humid. Highs 78-83 South Coast, 83-88 elsewhere. Wind S 5-15 MPH but some east coastal sea breezes.
SATURDAY: Partly sunny. Scattered showers/thunderstorms. Humid. Lows from the middle 60s to lower 70s. Highs from the upper 70s to middle 80s, coolest South Coast.
SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Less humid. Lows in the 60s. Highs from the middle 70s to middle 80s.

DAYS 6-10 (AUGUST 7-11)
Cooler and unsettled briefly August 7-8 as a trough swings through, then the larger scale pattern tries to take back over with more humidity and warmer weather.

DAYS 11-15 (AUGUST 12-16)
Overall similar pattern, typical for August, but still may have to contend with some passing troughs from the west at times as the old pattern tries to come back at times.

    1. Much! It’s like a switch. As soon as it goes back to normal, it’s completely different.

      1. GREAT news and thank you. I am slightly disappointed, however, that there is no snow in the forecast πŸ˜‰

  1. Hope you get your meds regulated soon TK and start feeling better. Down here in Sarasota typical Fla. 88Β°75Β°dew point. Intense lightning out in the Gulf breezy here at Lido Key.

  2. Thanks TK.
Activity starting to fire up across the northeast including the first severe thunderstorm warning of the day for parts of Tolland and Windham counties in CT. Storm moving northeast at 15mph.

  3. Yep – I knew it. I need to go to an appointment and I’m hearing thunder from a system that is relatively far away for it to be as loud as it is. I like to be home to enjoy the storms so I knew something would happen this pm. πŸ™

  4. Sun out brightly here in Sudbury but very dark to the north and there are rumbles of thunder.

  5. Good afternoon and thank you TK. Great that you are feeling better.

Plenty of cumulus around as I surveyed the landscape while out at lunch.
Some look like they are ready to pop and as JJ said, there is a fair amount
    of action out there now.

Here is a current radar image

    https://radblast.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/radar/WUNIDS_map?station=BOX&brand=wui&num=1&delay=50&type=N0R&frame=0&scale=1.000&noclutter=0&showstorms=0&mapx=400&mapy=240&centerx=400&centery=240&transx=0&transy=0&showlabels=1&severe=0&rainsnow=0&lightning=Hide&smooth=0&rand=25028256&lat=0&lon=0&label=you

I can see that cell NW of the City. πŸ˜€

  6. Special Weather Statement on that storm you mentioned JPDave. Nickel size hail winds in excess of 30 mph.
For a storm to be warned on its needs hail one inch in diameter or greater or winds 58 mph or greater so that storm falling short of severe criteria in both categories but that does not mean it can’t pulse up some more.

    1. Holy Crap Mark! AWESOME photos.

Incredible. We heard about hail possibilities, but that takes the cake.

  7. Mark great pics. This is the second time this summer your part of CT has gotten hail. The other back on the 27th of June.

  8. Another storm I am looking at Mark looks it may clip far southwest Fairfield County with half dollar size hail and gusts to 60mph. I would not be surprised if we see pics from that storm with the hail that happened in your town.

  9. Getting dark and I keep thinking I hear thunder, but being in the city, that noise
    could be anything. πŸ˜€

    1. There is a building in my line of sight for that approaching storm. πŸ˜€
So I can’t tell what is going on.

    1. Probability of Watch Issuance…20 percent

SUMMARY…Isolated/briefly severe storms capable of gusty/damaging
winds and hail will occur locally through the afternoon. Watch
issuance is not expected due to local/isolated nature of the risk.

  10. Glad you’re feeling better, TK!

Still mostly sunny here in Taunton with dark clouds to the north.
Today is the anniversary of the hottest day ever recorded in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. 107 degrees in New Bedford and Chester, and 104 in Providence.

Chester has the unique distinction of having the record maximum and minimum record temperatures for Massachusetts.

I remember heading to Onset in the early afternoon of August 2, 1975. To avoid the car from overheating, dad turned the heat on!!! The sand was too hot to walk on at the beach.

    1. Remember that day well. We were stuck in traffic waiting to cross
the Sagamore Bridge. My 3 year old daughter with wife and her mother and aunt. My beat up old car had no AC and My wife’s Mother and Aunt would not
let me roll the windows down because it would mess up their hair. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€
      Talk about a steam bath.

It was 97 way out at Eastham where we were staying.

When it is 97 on the Cape, you know it is HOT.

  11. Very dark with lots of thunder here for almost an hour . No rain. At this point, Sudbury seems to be in-between storms north and south.

  12. Storm SW of Boston looks to have pulsed out or nearly so. Now looks like new
cell is popping on outflow boundary. I hear thunder, but nothing shaking here.

  13. Moderate rain just started here. Wait a minute – now heavy. Looks like it’s going to be one of those days – love it. πŸ™‚

  14. Just got a call from Glenn Field at the NWS thanking me for my spotter report and photos, and confirming the time of the event. Stupid me – I submitted the report about 30 min after the actual “event” but didn’t override the “time of the event” πŸ™‚

    1. I’m in a similar situation in Back Bay. Thunder, rain in the vicinity, but only a few drops have actually hit the ground. … Ah, as I write this the heavens have sort of opened up with rain hitting the pavement.

  15. Hey TK, don’t even THINK about chasing storms today.

Sit tight and just watch what happens to come by. πŸ˜€

  16. My rain gauge at home is reading a whopping 0.00 inch.

I told my wife last night and again today at lunch that we would NOT see a drop
at our house. We may actually have seen a few drops, but not enough to trip the rain
gauge. Of course, it’s 3PM and we “could” have activity to 6,7 or 8PM or so. We shall see. πŸ˜€

    1. The brief `burst’ of rain is pretty much over. Certainly enough to wet the pavement and bring out the umbrella’s, but nothing to write home about. Did hear one nice clap of thunder.

  17. Mark looks like your part of CT could get hit again as a severe thunderstorm warning is up there until 3:45pm

  18. Nearly 1000 no power in framingham. I’m in Westboro. Just cloudy here but can’t see much out window.

  19. Thunder has been constant. Prob’ly due to so many storms and their slow movment. Getting a little wind now. We have been on extreme south end of that severe storm in Maynard.

  20. Glen Field is a good guy. Funny sense of humor. SAK and I know him fairly well, especially SAK!

I’ve been fascinated by watching the evolution of the storms, but not surprised, as this is how it was expected to go today. A lot more trigger and more unstable than yesterday. A lot of cells, but none of the last long. Many of them build west, or northwest while trying to move more north to northeast.

Here in Woburn we have been hit 3 times at my location starting after 2PM. The first of the 3 was the most impressive with 10 CG strikes within 1 mile including 4 within 1/2 mile and one of them about 1000 feet to my SE. The 2nd hit was the Boston storm that built north then north northwest. That cell gave Stoneham 3/4 inch hail but the core missed me just to the east. There were some really bright CG strikes 1 to 2 miles SE to E of me. The 3rd storm was more “lazy” and was one that popped up just to my south and slowly moved north. As it has been moving away a few CGs came out of the anvil and hit to my E-NE with very deep thunders.

    1. Regarding that 2nd storm. My son works in East Boston and reported
dime sized hail with that one. πŸ˜€

  21. Getting pounded again in Coventry, CT. Torrential rain and pitch black skies with frequent cloud to ground bolts very close by. Kinda scary…

    1. Lucky you. I have gotten screwed for sure. Rain to the West of me, Rain to the East of me, Rain to the North of me, Rain to the South of me, but NO RAIN OVER ME. πŸ˜€

  22. As I post this from my weather station showing ZIPPO rain, it is starting to RAIN
heavily here at the office. HUGE drops. I thought I heard some hail, but did not
    see any.

    My weather station:

    http://imgur.com/a/IvZG5

  23. Front lawn and street are now partially flooded.
My landscaping in the front is still covered with ice three hours after the first hail storm and the flowers and leaves on the vegetation have mostly been ripped off and destroyed.

  24. 3.65″ of rain and melted hail in the rain gauge…all of it has come since 1:30PM!
Emergency alert for flash flood warning just came up on my phone.

  25. Mark that is a shame re plants and shrubs. You sure are getting pounded

I’m back in Sutton. Drive home was curious. Torrential rain with hail mixed. Vivid lightening Bolts and crackling thunder through three cells as I drove through Westboro, upton, northbridge. Sutton so far has so little rain that there are dry spots in pavement

Sky all around us is pitch black and thunder in distance

    1. Nope. We still have power. And we still have thunder. Honestly, it basically hasn’t stopped thundering since around 1:30 p.m. here. Been very dark w/one heavy downpour; now just some off and on rain. Just lots of thunder.

  26. Where is everyone?

Mark, sure looks as if they are training over you. Also over framingham. And that cell over JP seems to be dancing in place.

I may as well enjoy vicariously. Except Marks area as that looks bad. Sutton has 0.07 rain

  27. Things have quieted somewhat as much of the heaviest stuff is just to the south of me now. But another 0.35″ has fallen and I am up to 4″ of rain now in the last 4 hours.

    1. Not here but that is what it was doing on my drive home. Was awesome. At one point I was talking to son…through car radio not handheld.. and lightning hit so hard the radio went nuts. Played music over voice and then made odd noises.

  28. Partly sunny, temperature 73 degrees here on nantucket, looks bad up and away from the coast. Impressive hail reports

  29. it’s been thundering since about 2PM. We had a pretty good one here. My wife
was telling me how bad it was and for me NEVER to be a meteorologist because
    I told here it wouldn’t rain a drop. Oh well. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Look at this cool shot my took from the top of the Pru. Figures he would go up
there during a t-storm. I’m sure he did it just to get shots like that!!!

    https://scontent.fbed1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/20479590_10213711233602205_2395362377178325586_n.jpg?oh=17cdaeafc766ba43c8f5444e1e1324be&oe=5A39701A

btw, he grabbed 2 more, but I shared the most impressive shot.

And finally, we are up to 1.97 inches here in JP. Destined to top 2 inches
    for sure. πŸ˜€

  30. Another shot from my son from the 50th floor before heading back down to the street.
I think he had some fun.

    compass99.PNG

  31. 4.20″ the final total here in Coventry, CT today.

A portion of my landscape bed in the front is still buried under a 2″ hail “drift” a whopping 7 hours after the storm.

Impressive! Was not expecting this today.

    1. Ha! Impressive may be a bit of an understatement, Mark. I’d say WOW…but that is an understatement also. I’m glad you are all right

    2. Mighty impressive.

Just hit 2.18 inches here. Totals highly variable across the region, but I will
happily take 2.18 inches. My lawn and shrubs are very thankful.

  32. Everything stayed northwest of North Attleboro until the end. .05 in the gauge. Heard a lot of thunder in the distance this afternoon but nothing until the last half hour to hour. Looks like you all quite the day!

  33. Two rounds of downpours and rumbles of thunder where I am but nothing like some places had today.

  34. As Coastal said, not a drop down here in our part of the South Shore. Although the cloud cover was very welcomed at the football camp.

  35. Something to keep an eye coming off of Africa. Both the GFS and Euro shows this low pressure moving across the eastern Atlantic in the coming days and the NHC gives it a 30 percent chance for development over the next five days.

    http://www.nhc.noaa.gov

    1. Humarock was closed one day when we were there. They don’t bother to tell anyone not on public beach so we found out day after

  36. Heading on our first family camping trip in Oakham Mass. please keep away any storms. The kids aren’t afraid of bad weather but it would suck to deal with heavy rain.

    1. Enjoy and we’ll see what we can do to keep a storm away from your area.

Where is Oakham, Ma? Never heard of it and I thought I knew where
all 351 cities and towns were? I guess I know nothing.

  37. I think we have a trifecta today….or is it a perfecta

Happy birthday, rainshine, JPDave and my youngest grand on her first birthday, Rilyn Mac. May you all have a perfect day and year to follow.

    1. Vicki, and a special Happy Birthday to your youngesst grand on ther 1st birthday! Love the name, Rilyn Mac!

  38. Happy Birthday to all πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Hope the camping trip is super Hadi !

Not a drop up here either :), but it sure has gotten humid.

00z GFS having a Hugo flashback.

  39. Radar is pretty quite across the region so far.
NWS mentioned a weak mid-level cap, so perhaps nothing will fire until
    after 2 or 3 PM????
