Thursday Forecast

7:28AM

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 5-9)
The warm regime in place remains in place for this period as the dominant feature will be a high pressure ridge off the Atlantic Coast. Cold front #1 is making its feeble attempt to cool things off today but this front washes out over the region then its remains push back north as a warm front by early Saturday. Cold from #2 makes its attempt by early Sunday but fails as well. By Monday we’ll likely be dealing with the approach and possible arrival of tropical moisture from the south, associated with what remains of a tropical system currently in the Gulf of Mexico.
TODAY: Partly cloudy early, then mostly sunny. Highs 68-75 Cape Cod, 75-82 elsewhere. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Mostly clear early, then partly cloudy. Lows 55-63. Wind light W.
FRIDAY: Variably cloudy. Slight chance of showers. Highs 68-77, coolest Cape Cod. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Areas of fog possible. Lows 57-64. Wind light variable.
SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy early, then partly sunny. More humid. Highs 68-75 South Coast, 75-82 elsewhere. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.
SUNDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of showers. Humid. Lows in the 60s. Highs from the upper 60s to middle 70s South Coast, middle 70s to lower 80s elsewhere.
MONDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers which may become more numerous. Humid. Lows in the 60s. Highs in the 70s.

DAYS 6-10 (OCTOBER 10-14)
Humid with a rain risk October 10. Dry and somewhat cooler October 11-14 but this forecast is not high confidence at this time.

DAYS 11-15 (OCTOBER 15-19)
There are mixed signals in long range guidance but the overall feeling is for a mild start, a wet middle, and a cooler finish. Will fine-tune this period as it gets closer.

  1. Good morning and thank you TK.

Yet, another beautiful day in a long string of them.

No complaints in the weather department. ๐Ÿ˜€

  2. Thanks TK
Abnormally dry conditions with latest drought monitor update across most of SNE.
Hopefully we could get some beneficial rain with what is left of Nate early next week.

  3. GFS continues its ineneptness …..

Has a 1,000 mb low landfalling on the gulf coast, yet has a 70 mph wind gust contour to the system’s east and a max wind gust of 80 mph. Sure ……….

  4. The remote control batteries maybe running low for Boston sports fans going between the different games unless you DVR the hockey game watch the football game or vice versa.

    1. Not for this guy. ๐Ÿ˜€

I’ll watch the end of the Sox game and the whole Pats game. Until the Bruins prove worthy of my viewership, they can suck wind as far as I am concerned.

I used to be one of the biggest hockey fans on the planet. I played tons of hockey including in a couple of organized leagues, but I just haven’t been into it. I briefly came back to watching a few years back when Tyler Seguin was playing. I think that the 2011-2012 and perhaps the 2012-2013 season
      was/were the last season(s) I watched.

  5. Quite a summer like, humid afternoon down here. Can feel the difference when exiting the ac of the car.

    1. I wouldn’t know, my a/c isn’t working in my car. I figured why bother getting it fixed now since we are heading into cool, crisp fall days. Clearly I was wrong. ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Sale screwing it up already. Sox down 2-0.
If they lose today and they probably will, they will NOT get by Houston.
    GUARANTEED!!!!!

And they are only facing VERLANDER today! Unless something changes in a hurry
this sack of banjo hitters aren’t going to do DIDDLY SQUAT against Verlander.

    SEE YA

      1. Sale has tired, clearly, as the season drew to a close. Nevertheless, the Sox are a scrappy bunch. Don’t count them out. I did prematurely this season and found out that they’re a whole lot better than I gave them credit. Of the 4 major sports teams in Boston, the Sox may be the best suited at this moment and the coming years to compete for championships. This doesn’t mean they’ll win it all this year, but their core is excellent. On paper, the Celtics’ core looks excellent, but needs to prove itself in real games. I have a strong feeling the Patriots’ best days are behind them (they’ll be competitive because of their offense, but the holes on defense are gaping and not easily fixable in my humble opinion), and the Bruins just look fair to me.

        1. On my comment regarding the Bruins “fair” in weather terminology connotes something good, but in everyday parlance fair implies not-so-great (ie, he did a fair job).

  7. Red Sox… totally apathetic towards them, but they’ll get swept. Mediocre offense, and Chris Sale, who really carried them for parts of this season, has fallen apart. I’m not quite sure how they beat the Yankees in the AL East, to be honest. Only thing that may make me interested in them, just as a sports fan in general, would be a Sox/Yanks ALCS. That’d be cool. Yanks might make it there. Sox will not.

Bruins… I don’t know a whole lot about the team. General consensus seems to be that they took a step backward in the offseason. Will probably be fighting for a final playoff spot in several months.

Pats… I have not given up on them. Obviously, they have to play much better on defense. But they’ve proven the doubters wrong too many times. Giving them at least another two or three games to show some defensive improvement. Offense has been more than good enough.

Weather… beautiful day here in Plymouth, NH today!

    1. I love the sox by recently they are just not a organization I can root for. From renaming Yawkee way to those silly little dances they do after a win….. just not my kind of team.

        1. I absolutel do not agree with them renaming Yawkee. I wrote to John Henry. He never had the decency to write back. The Red Sox played a large part in discrimatory practices. john Henry is dirtying that

  8. One more brief sports comment: Over the summer I heard many people compare Chris Sale to Pedro Martinez. I don’t think there is a legitimate comparison. Pedro was much more dominant, and his dominance lasted entire seasons and for many seasons. Moreover, Pedro was always up to the task when it came to big games. Sure, the Yankees sort of had his number towards the end. But even then Pedro didn’t give up 5 runs in 5 innings.

  9. a Houston sweep is highly likely, especially with Fister going in game 3. Although the manager didn’t pitch or hit for them tonight, I hate his guts and want him GONE! IF a sweep accomplishes that, then a sweep is a good thing.

There is a possibility that Pomeranz salvages one game for the Sox.

  10. Word is that Gronk has been ruled OUT for tonight’s Pats game.

The other guys will have to step it up and I am sure they will.

  11. Watch this defense be shut down as I believe stupid Rowe is out with an injury Do not wish an injury on a player but I hope he stays the hell off the field. Gilmore needs to get back to what he was in Buffalo and we should never have let logan walk away. We are missing his tackling ability. Thank god we have Hightower coming back I think patricia will release the flowers/ hightower

  12. Chris Sale…a (postseason) BUST!!!

I really had a good feeling that the Sox would surprise us. Well…they have and NOT in a good way. ๐Ÿ™

  13. The Sox suck so badly, they made the post-season. ๐Ÿ˜›

It was one game. I don’t care who it was that pitched. They’ll bounce back. ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. I don’t agree with renaming Yawkey Way, either. Rewriting history can lead one down a slippery slope towards erasing history. Certainly some name changes are warranted, as the names were those of evil monsters with blood on their hands: So, Berlin’s “Stalin Allee (Stalin avenue) became Karl Marx Allee (surely this rubbed certain people the wrong way, but it does reflect the history of East Berlin). Similarly, Adolf Hiter Platz (square) after the war became Reichskanzlerplatz (Chancellor of the Reich Square). But, many proposed name changes are trivial. Tom Yawkey was a narrow-minded man in some ways, but broad-minded in others. He gave away much of his wealth to good causes, such as MGH, Jimmy Fund, Dana Farber, and countless others. He was the longest tenured owner in baseball history. I find fault with his prejudices, but I also find fault with Woodrow Wilson’s more explicit bigotry (yet, Wilson’s legacy as a founding father of the League of Nations, among other achievements, is part and parcel of our nation’s history and should not be deleted from our memory by a name change).

  15. If you were to tell me the B’s game would be the most exciting of the 3 Boston sports games on tonight I would have said you were on crack. And yet, here we are

    1. I’d have said it…merely because it’s hockey versus baseball and football. ๐Ÿ™‚

      No contest.

      1. I can see how you’d feel that way. Hockey has more consistent action, but to me it’s just soccer on ice

      2. Agreed. It’s faster and much more continuous, fewer commercial breaks, very few if any time-outs, no silly 2-minute warnings (I’ve always wondered; warning about what, that I need to look at yet another dumb Bud Light ad?), no injury timeouts (again, I’ve always wondered why play has to stop and “we need to break for commercials” almost every time a player is `down’), no catcher `visits’ to the mound, no adjusting of batting gloves and stepping out of the box to add time to an already interminable game.

  16. Why do I prefer football? Easy. 16 game season. Every. Game. Matters. Just not so in the other sports. Excitement wise, hockey is right up there. Basketball too. But the seasons are so long, each game feels diluted to me. Can only really get into it late in the season and in the playoffs.

    1. I totally agree with you that football is currently the best of the major sports. But I’d like to see them divide the teams into two leagues, the top 16 and the bottom 16, and run the leagues separately and have promotion and relegation between the leagues to shake things up every year.

I did see a few Red Sox games this summer, but they were so slow and lacking in action. I think they would do well to shorten the game to 7 innings, allow ties except in the post season, and hold the playoffs in September. They should get rid of interleague games too.

Basketball and hockey are almost year round sports… What could be done to make their seasons faster and more engaging?

  17. Do the Pats suck yet? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Bruins up 3-1 in the 3rd as of 9:24PM.

So regarding the moisture from Nate getting up here early next week: The key will be the magnitude and axis of high pressure near the Southeast. Too strong on the high, moisture will erode. Too much retrogression, the ridge could bubble back into the deep Southeast and be far enough south that upper winds are more westerly to the north of it and the moisture hooks right and stays south of New England. Not going with this scenario but it’s possible.

  18. Agree with your thoughts on Nate, TK.

Solid open for the Bโ€™s, been flicking to them during commercials. Iโ€™m astounded at how so many people have just given up on the Pats. Does anyone remember three short years ago?

      1. I never understood it either. I suppose there are probably fair weather fans aplenty in every market.

I’m a fan of my teams, regardless. We’ve been LUCKY to see all we have. I’ll never complain on the large scale. Disappointing games now and then I may complain a bit about in a “well that was a sucky performance” kind of way…but still love my teams. ๐Ÿ™‚

  19. Well its October and the patriots are pulling together like they usually do was it nice and dominate no far from it, but that defense really did improve. The difference, not Eric Rowe. As long as he stays off the field patriots defense will be fine. The rest of the secondary did not have to do their job as well as his. Patriots running backs are decent so why not use them to limit brady getting hit as the o-line is now the weakest piece of the puzzle. We also need the patriots to loose the stupid penalties
In terms of sports being watched, I am strange but I love the sport that I love in skiing. in terms of the team sports that everyone thinks about. Basketball is so dam boring to watch, up and down the court someone touches someone its a penalty. Baseball can be boring to watch fun to play. Hockey is fun to play and fun to watch but can get boring especially since if you suck for a quarter of the season you can still make the playoffs. Football is fun to watch and play. Every game counts and everyone matters.

  20. re: PATS

They lose that game last night if the other teams kicker could kick. ๐Ÿ˜€

The Pats sorely miss The Gronk and Minitron.

  21. re: fair weather fans in Boston

I respectfully disagree. Sure, there are some, as in every city, but I don’t think its more so in Boston. If anything its less than other cities. We often mistake criticism of a team with “giving up” and being labeled as a fair weather fan. That couldn’t be further from the truth. If we are critical of a team it means we care deeply about the success and failure of the team. Fair weather fans, to me, are fans who could care less if the team wins or loses and just watches for pure entertainment value and isn’t intimately invested in the outcome

    1. I’m with you Ace.
I LOVE baseball and the Sox, but I tell it as I see it.
I have been a Sox fan since I was a little guy.
I have seen Ted Williams and Micky Mantle play at Fenway.

BUT I loathe the Sox Manager. I want him GONE!! GONE!! GONE!!!

AND I still think we see a HOUSTON SWEEP.

      1. IF Pomeranz can pitch well today and the sox win, I will feel differently about the series. I know I’m alone on this, but I think Fister will shine in game 3. Ironically, his postseason #’s are the best on the sox. He’s been here before and hasn’t soiled himself

        1. I hope you are correct. I do not have good vibes. Fister’s
last few starts were less then stellar. However, given the alternatives, Porkcello or Bleepriguez, I suppose it makes
          a certain amount of sense.

Today is truly a MUST WIN!!!

Pomeranz has the stuff to win, but can he overcome that
line up? That is the big question.

    2. still do not understand why we let Francona leave. Look at what he is doing, which tells you when there was a bad period it was not him who should have left.

      1. That was a joke letting him go.

At least he knows how to manage a game unlike the turd Boston
        currently has.

    3. I will respectfully stand by my opinion. Boston fans have always booed their own team’s members if they are in a slump.

I’m using the term fair weather as a fan who will support a team when it is doing well and criticize it when it is not doing well. And we have them in spades.

If you want to use another term, I’m happy with that too. The description rather than the term is what I am referring to.

With regard to If we are critical of a team it means we care deeply about the success and failure of the team. Boston has always been prone to booing…from the time I was quite young. Booing is not criticism. In my view it is simply bad manners. However, even if an an individual does not boo, criticizing someone when they are down, has never seemed a good approach to me. I’ve always preferred showing support and encouragement to be the best approach to anyone struggling. The vast majority of athletes work incredibly hard to do the best they can. I understand there can be exceptions. However, when someone works very hard and still cannot figure out what is wrong…..I’m not sure criticism is constructive.

I know with my kids, if they were struggling, the last thing I did was criticize them. That applies to my friends also….anyone for that matter.

Just my view. And I’ve been around too long not to know it sure exists here.

  22. At least the Bruins and Pats won last night for you Boston sports fans.
Tough day for New York sports fans with the Yankees getting shut out and the Rangers losing the home opener to the team that had the worst record in the NHL last season.
Red Sox must win today as well as the Yankees. If Red Sox get swept again I do believe John Farrell will be out of a job. Yankees are playing with house money but if there not going to win the series I hope they at least win a game. They over achieved big time this year so in my opinion successful season.

  23. Great comments, Ace and Amy: On the idea of relegation, I’m all for it, especially in basketball. The fact that teams tank to get the number one pick is a disgrace. I find the whole draft system in every sport in America weirdly socialist in a very capitalist country (winners get penalized and losers get rewarded; how does that square with the American ethos?). In my humble opinion, draft pick numbers should all follow a lottery format, giving equal chances to all teams. On Boston fans, we’re not fair weather supporters. In fact, fans in this town are truly fanatics – even teams that aren’t doing well draw fairly well at the gate. Plus, many fans here are knowledgeable and therefore able to be constructively critical.

    1. First time, I believe, we will disagree. However, we may be using different definitions for the term fair weather. I responded to Ace on this.

        1. The hurricane models are NOT impressed either, however, virtually all of the models want to have Nate or Nate’s remains deliver a fair amount of water to our region.

Hey, not sure it was mentioned, but does not TK
have a hand in this particular system? Just saying. ๐Ÿ˜€

  24. TK – still planning on hiking in the White Mtns tomorrow. Looks like tomorrow will indeed be the better of the two weekend days with limited shower chances up there. Question though as it looks like a mostly cloudy day – what do you expect the ceiling will be up there tomorrow? If all goes well, we will be hiking the Franconia Ridge and be above treeline at elevations roughly between 4300-5300 feet. I am hoping the summits will not be in the clouds the whole time. Thanks.

    1. I think they may be in the clouds a lot tomorrow and less so on Sunday. However thinking the shower risk is greater on Sunday.

  25. In Spain. Madrid, Cรณrdoba, Torremelinos all cloudless and low 80s. No Humidity. Don’t know why I bought a round trip ticket!!

  26. Bad sign….

    Houston 3, Red Sox 1
    Bottom of 3rd inning.

Yes, they are not out of this one, but I simply do not like the looks of it.

Just once could the SOX get a lead in a play off game? It always seems like they
are in the hole with every stinken one of them.
