Saturday Forecast

8:59AM

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 7-11)
A frontal boundary will sit just southeast of the region this weekend, drifting slowly to the southeast with time. Some leftover moisture riding up behind the nearly stationary front today will produce some light precipitation in parts of the region through late morning. The southeastward drift of this front will result in a wave of low pressure moving along it to pass far enough south of the region to keep just about its entire precipitation shield offshore as it goes by, clipping only Nantucket and possibly outer Cape Cod with some light rain/snow early Sunday. A trough of low pressure will move through Sunday evening and may produce a snow shower in a few locations. A sliver of high pressure will bring fair weather Monday before the next threat of unsettled weather Tuesday. However, with this system we’ll avoid a larger storm resulting because 2 main pieces of energy will not phase – the southern system passing harmlessly out to see while a weaker northern disturbance brings patchy light precipitation, followed by a push of drier air by Wednesday. Forecast details…
TODAY: Mostly cloudy through more sun possible north and west of Boston later in the day. Areas of very light to light rain/snow until late morning. Highs 41-48. Wind W up to 10 MPH.
TONIGHT: Partly to mostly cloudy. Lows 30-37. Wind NW up to 10 MPH.
SUNDAY: Mostly to partly cloudy. Chance of snow/mix/rain Nantucket and possibly outer Cape Cod in the morning. Highs 38-45. Wind N 5-15 MPH.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy with a passing snow shower possible evening. Clearing overnight. Lows 25-33. Wind N 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.
MONDAY: Sunny. Highs 42-49. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.
TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Scattered areas of light rain/mix/snow possible. Lows in the 30s. Highs in the 40s.
WEDNESDAY: Partly cloudy. Lows in the 30s. Highs from the middle 40s to lower 50s.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 12-16)
This period of time is fairly difficult to figure out weather-wise not only given that spring has so many influencing factors in place with a cold Canada, a chilly ocean, and a building warm air mass not all that far to the south of New England. In addition, the boundary of that Canadian cold and southern US warmth will never be all that far away. My best guess for now is for a quick push of warmer air and possibly a rain shower on April 12 on the milder side of the boundary, then a shot of cooler air and a breezy but dry day on April 13. High pressure should bring fair weather April 14 but with it centered in eastern Canada and not off the US East Coast that is a recipe for a chilly coastline and milder air in the interior, but not the potentially very warm shot of air that once looked possible. Sometime during the period of April 15-16 a trough will move through from the west but it may be rapidly weakening as it does so, pushing just a frontal boundary through with a passing brief period of precipitation but temperature averaging near to slightly below normal. Plenty of time to fine-tune this period of time especially as April 16 is Patriots Day / Marathon Monday.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 17-21)
The current indications are more strongly for a continuation of passing systems with a couple periods of unsettled weather, and temperatures averaging near to mostly below normal through the middle of the month.

  1. just got back from a walk. It’s just plain miserable out. Start a fire and stay indoors.

  2. This morning Barry showed a very interesting April snow stat:

In the past 100 years, Boston has had snow in April 76% of the time and no snow (not even a trace) only 17% of the time.

April snows are indeed very rare around here. ๐Ÿ˜‰

      1. A miserable day for baseball is when the Sox lose. As long as they win, every day is shirtsleeve weather AFAIC. ๐Ÿ™‚

        1. ba ha ha the only thing I can sat is the sun is heginning to emerge it is still very windy.
NO day to be playing baseball. Tge season should not start till May imho.

        2. They’ve won 6 straight. I’m a little surprised how little buzz they’re getting. What surprises me – and quite frankly annoys me a little – is all the non-stop soap opera Patriots talk, but also Celtics chatter on sports radio. If I hear another existential moment from Tom v. Time (you know, the “what I am doing this for, what I am here for, where am I going, who am I …”) I’m going to scream. I love the Pats, but right now the side-bar stories of Gronkowski and Brady annoy me.

          1. The reason there is little buzz about the Sox is two fold. One, it is really early in the season, and two, they will have played their first 9 games against the two worst ream in baseball that are barely above minor league level. Both Tampa and Miami are picked to finish dead last in baseball with 70 or fewer wins.

        1. Marathon Monday would be a good date to start baseball season. Of course MLB would have to shorten the season.

  3. Re: Major sports.

All the seasons are too long. Even football.
Football can be 16 weeks but forget the stupid bye week. Refine the playoffs and fit them into 3 weekends with the stupidbowl errr Superbowl always before the end of January.
Since everybody’s afraid to play in the Pro Bowl, just turn that into a game of Nerf tag football while players wear costumes of their favorite cartoon character. That’ll be fun.

Baseball: Spring training starts March 1. Exhibition games start March 15ish. Regular season starts April 15 or so, and NEVER EVER EVER should the World Series be decided in early November. EVER. In fact, it should be decided by the end of September. End the regular season around labor day and then do playoffs for the rest of September. We don’t need baseball in October. That’s football season.

Hockey: As much as I love hockey, even that season is too long. Exhibition games October. Regular season November through March. Playoffs April to early May. Stanley Cup should be won no later than my birthday. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Basketball: *yawn* Do whatever. After the 1980s, the NBA has been a joke.

    1. As long as people keep paying and watching, seasons will only get longer. The NFL is toying around with an 18 game regular season…I bet it happens at some point.

      1. True. It’s all about the money.

Still, the sports seasons are long and drawn out. Hockey playoffs is great, but they last an eternity. Hockey and basketball playoffs period is longer than the college football season for many teams (eg, Division 1).

      2. Life is only getting busier and more expensive. Add a low attention span for coming generations and you’ll eventually see the decline in professional sports consumption broadly.

  4. Need to get outside and do s little work. Too cold. Miserable day really. Resembles mid winter in a lot of ways. Just depressing. Not really any warmth in sight.

  5. Did a cold front come through? It feels like the arctic tundra outside as opposed to early this morning actually felt on the mild side in spite of the light “chilly” rain falling.

  6. TK – I am going to have to disagree about the bye weeks in football as it gives players with injuries a chance to heal without having to miss a game and possibly save a team from a potential loss. College football has always had “byes” on their schedules but have not been referred to them as that specifically as far as I know.

As for the Pro Bowl, get rid of it, or perhaps have a game at the end of the season consisting of players from both conferences start that hardly ever get into a game during the regular season. If nothing else, they can brag to their grandkids that they actually played a full 60 minutes in an official NFL game that may never happen otherwise. Practice squad players, for example.

    1. The Bye Week only benefits injured players if the timing is right. I still say it’s a TOTALLY USELESS part of the schedule. This is part of the game. Hockey players don’t get 2 weeks off to heal. The coaching staff and management will replace them if necessary. It’s just the way it goes. I don’t think the NFL should get special treatment.

      1. Bye weeks should be no earlier than 6 weeks into the season and no later than 9 weeks. I will say that it is totally ridiculous to have them in week 4 or week 16, for instance.

As I stated above, college football has always had weeks off here and there. Do you have the same opinion TK?

        1. If they are going to have bye weeks then I would agree with something like all have to be weeks 6 through 11. Those six weeks. All teams should have to play the first and last 5 weeks.

  7. I have no issue with the length of football season. About right actually. The other 3 however are too long.

  8. Iโ€™m still amazed that in full sun, April 7 itโ€™s 45 degrees at noon.
My mom in OKC has 27 degrees and light snow. Weather sucks there too

    1. They don’t need 2 weeks. Just 1 is good enough. I realize they stick the Pro Bowl in that week between the playoffs & super bowl now but that’s not doing anything for the game. Last regular season games should be by the final weekend of December. Playoffs take place in 4 weekends during January. 1: Round 1. 2: Round 2. 3: AFC & NFC Championship games. 4: Super Bowl. DONE.

  9. The longest season in professional team sports is soccer, by a very wide margin. It’s truly incredible how many games they play, how fit they are, the length of the season, the numbers of intra-season competitions, and then the national teams (basically all star teams) participate in cup qualifiers and tournaments. Take Ronaldo, for instance, Or Messi, Sanchez, Torres, etc … The Spanish league begins in mid August and ends in May. About 36 games. Each team also participates in a national cup competition, which adds another 2 to 10 games to the schedule, depending on how far the team goes. In addition, the good teams (about 10 of them in the Spanish league) are in the Europa Cup or Champion’s League, which adds another 6 to 12 games to the schedule, depending on how far you go. Then on top of all that, the national squad plays another 12 qualifier games a year, and in years when there’s a Euro Cup or World Cup many national teams play another 3 to 7 games, again depending on how far you go. Ronaldo hardly ever gets a break. His season starts in July (pre-season) and ends in July (World Cup). I’m not exaggerating.

Europeans may take a lot of vacation, but their soccer players are machines and hardly ever enjoy down time.

    1. What is this soccer you speak of???

Seriously THE most boring thing I have ever attempted to watch. Iโ€™d rather watch paint dry.

      1. Your opinion, and you’re entitled to it.

I find soccer very entertaining, especially the top-flight leagues in Europe (NOT MLS, which is generally poor quality). In some ways it’s an acquired taste. When I went to Holland at the age of 15 I didn’t know anything about soccer. But, I quickly got into it. I love the athleticism, endurance, and technique. Still do.

        1. Soccer is underrated in this country but that is no surprise given the average attention span, but I find it funny when it comes from a baseball fan who is a fan of a game that has less action and takes twice as long to play. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Oh well.

          1. Itโ€™s not the attention span thing. I just find it horribly boring. Same with hockey. Itโ€™s soccer on ice for me. I went to a Bruins game about 20 years ago and fell asleep. I took the kids to a Railers game back in February for catholic schools week. A lot of their friends went. I left them in their seats and went and sat in the bar, drank and played games on my phone.

            1. It’s so hard to score in soccer. One or two goals in a game is all it takes. That’s no fun IMO.

              1. Sometimes games are not all about offense. The difficulty in scoring is what makes soccer so interesting. But too many people need instant gratification from goals. Most of the world understand the game.

                But to each their own.

        2. Mac always thought Americans did have the attention span also. And that they didnโ€™t understand the talent and difficulty. Speaking of Maccy, I think Iโ€™ll check out the Masters. I still canโ€™t watch golf, but I did watch the masters a bit last year because it was the sports highlight of his year.

  10. I observed someone saying how bad the Sox are after they went down 2-0 in the top of the 1st inning today.

Wonder what they are saying after the 2nd inning…………………………………………………………………………………..

    1. Sox look good. It’s very early, but the signs are pointing in the right direction. The Yankees have been inconsistent, with a suspect bullpen (I would not have thought that would happen). Should be a fun series next week. Of course, I do remember how the Red Sox used to dominate the Yankees in April and May back in the 1970s, only to get pounded into submission late in the season.

  11. Telling someone they donโ€™t gave the attention span and just donโ€™t appreciate soccer is damn insulting.

    1. I did not point any specific person out. I was talking in general and expressing an opinion, something you do quite often on here, and point out you don’t understand how others don’t share your thoughts. It goes both ways.

      1. Ditto from me. Although, I was repeating Macs thoughts. I personally do not care for soccer and I suspect it is for the reasons he gave. I have to laugh at the thought that he would insult anyone …ever ๐Ÿ™‚

        1. It is the reason I donโ€™t watch soccer….or golf for that matter although the reason for golf now is a lot more complex. Iโ€™m not insulted. Short attention spans are not negatives. My shorter attention span has served me well in my life as my mind is always active.

  12. Baseball should start mid April be done by mid October. NHL and NBA should not be going into the middle of June. They should be done by mid May. For those two sports there should only be best of seven in the playoffs for conference championship and Finals. If you make the other two rounds best of five that will shorten the postseason in those sports. Football I would like to see the Super Bowl go back to the last Sunday in January and the week after the NFC and AFC Championship games.

  13. I think the below normal temperature pattern (overall) is good through at least April 20, possibly beyond.

        1. This reminds me of winters and into spring from years ago even with warmer weather stretching into late fall. The daffodils have been weeks early for quite some time. In the 80s and early 90s, they consistently appeared just before April school vacation. This year they are back on track.

  14. Have a good afternoon and evening all. You’ll next hear from me on the Sunday morning update.

      1. I do indeed. Look for a couple picture posts on FB of the sky from yesterday. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ll be posting them off and on either before or after a few 1988 tunes.

          1. OMG remember those days. Hahahahahaha. Whip out a Survivor cassette and drive up and down Main Street too with the windows down.

            1. And some of us might have been watching for a muscle car willing to race ….they always thought taking on a girl was a good bet….. ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜‰

  15. Vicki if I remember correctly your a fan of Fred Couples. Tomorrow 1pm on CBS just before the final round at The Masters there going to do a Fred Couples called Fred Couples at The Masters.

    1. Oh wow JJ. I just saw this. I love freddie. Iโ€™ll set it to record. I canโ€™t thank you enough.

  16. Vicki your welcome. I am looking forward to seeing the Fred Couples special. It should be a great final round as Patrick Reed is trying to win his first major and Rory Mcliroy going for the career grand slam.

  17. You know what I think about sports…. they are suppose to be fun.
They are suppose to work your body and make you exercise.
Which is why I always wonder why cheerleading was not a sport. I wonder why Marching band is not considered a sport, and god darnit, going 9-5 stride, at 195 tempo going backwards at a 30 degree angle going over your right foot, then going backwards all while keeping your upper body straight forward to the side line with your head pointed to the box. Oh and while holding an instrument, memorizing music and drill. In my band, punishment for being late was to run the hill…. and they call golf a sport….. Did you know, the 8 to 10 minute marching band show, uses up as much energy as the first quarter of a division 1 sports team just saying….. ok end of that rant. Now to soccer, they are consistently moving, they use so much energy. Football as well uses alot of energy as does hockey and basketball. I put it into two categories, what I like to watch and what I like to play. 1. Football, Soccer/Hockey baseball, basketball. thats the order in which I like to watch. to play, Football, soccer, hockey basketball and baseball. Also have to admit, i suck playing basketball but still like to play. I will also tell you that I am not normal and I like to watch skiing alot, which to the average person is boring.
