Wednesday Forecast

DAYS 1-5 (JULY 4-8)
Hot ridge continues to dominate on this Independence Day and will do so through tomorrow before relaxing is grip and heading westward to some degree late in the week, allowing a trough to dip out of Canada. There are no significant changes to this forecast which will pretty much look like an update of the previous. Still have to work out Friday’s timing to determine the coverage and intensity of thunderstorms. Before that, we will see a few more pop up storms today, in 2 rounds, but more isolated than yesterday and this time mainly to the south. Forecast details…

  1. As Tom pointed out yesterday some slightly lower dewpoints seem to be drifting down into the Cape Ann area with readings in the 67-69 range…not a dramatic drop but maybe a little relief.

  2. Thanks, TK…
    Happy Fourth of July, everyone!
Enjoy a fun, restful and cool day with family and friends!
    God Bless America!!!

  3. Not a drop of rain here last evening. Yes, we heard thunder a few times, but nothing here, even though it was raining on the Esplanade a few miles away.

I don’t expect any rain here today either. We shall see.

Dew point has come down a whole 10 degrees and now sits at 65 here. I’ll take it.

It may be due to my age, but yesterday was the hottest day for my wife and I ever.
(Yes I know there have been hotter days, but this was the hottest feeling I have ever experienced) It was 91 in the house! Absolutely brutality. Leaving an air conditioned room to head into that heat was gruesome!!! Spent most of our time in one of
    3 rooms with AC.

I’d be happy to NEVER see that kind of heat/humidity again.

    1. I was thinking the same thing Dave. I’ll be 63 in a week and yesterday really hit me hard.

      1. I get it believe me, I’ll be 71 next month. I can’t even believe that.
Other than the effects of the heat yesterday, I sure as hell
don’t feel 71, but as someone says around here, it is what it is. ๐Ÿ˜€

    2. That stinks JpDave !

The amount of water I drink increases big time, not by a plan, but in how much I can drink. And, it’s like it disappears into thin air ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. FWIW, both the HRRR and the RAP show ZILCH for convection today, save for
the HRRR showing some along the extreme South Coast.

  5. Sunday I thought was the toughest day of this heat wave but yesterday was a close second. Both those days dew points and heat index values as bad as it gets here in SNE.

  6. Happy birthday, America.

From John Adams to Abigail on July 2, 1776…..our actual Independence Day

โ€œBut the Day is past. The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America.โ€”I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with4 Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.โ€

    1. Vicki…just wondering if you ever watched the HBO mini series “John Adams”. I’ve watched about half of it (have it on DVD) and need to finish it.

      1. I also watched about half. Iโ€™ve read McCulloughs book three times along with others on Adams. It may be time to read again.

Of all of our founders, he is easily my favorite as well as his wife. Mac and I went to the fireplace in washington sq Brookline for a few fireside chats re Adams.

  7. According to Eric, 2,000 people in New England died during the big heat wave of July 1911.

  8. Thanks TK, and Happy 4th all!

As JpDave mentioned, the HRRR is advertising a quiet afternoon today, and I agree. Just a slight chance of a shower in CT/RI. Otherwise, just another hot one, though not quite as brutal as yesterday.

    1. Oh and happy vacation to Vicki and was it, Sue ?

Welcome to the south shore Vicki, enjoy !!

    1. ๐Ÿ™‚ Happy Fourth of July, MassBay.

Itโ€™s a good song. I work at it and sure donโ€™t always succeed.

  9. Was just out watering. Really nice EAST wind here, but ineffectually as it has
just reached 90 here and my sensor is still in the shade. 87 at the airport with
    light NE wind.

    Ocean temp 67

This is still a very hot air mass for sure.

  10. Beautiful breeze coming right up the river from the east. Very comfortable here on the banks of the Charles!

    1. Give it a kick to reach here. I mean the East wind is here, but it is not doing
      much good. Still 90.

    2. I notice someone here has decided to view fireworks in Boston for a change. Is this your first time TK? ๐Ÿ˜‰

      1. Iโ€™m not TK which I probably didnโ€™t have to tell you. ๐Ÿ™‚ but I think he goes every year.

  11. I find it amazing how Logan manages to have temps upper 80s – 90+ with a consistent east wind.

  12. Happy 242nd Birthday, America!

Vicki, thank you for sharing the letter from John Adams to Abigail.

While our founding fathers had flaws – don’t we all! – they were a remarkable group of people, who charted a course that would change the world forever. Capitalist democracy, warts and all, is the world’s best system.

TK, I must have just run by you on the Cambridge side of the Charles. Is that where you’re sitting?

Today’s breeze felt refreshing, although it is still a hot one.

Snowplow trucks are all over my neighborhood. Some actually have their big yellow snowplows attached and are seemingly ready to spring into action. Did I miss a surprise in the forecast? … Of course it’s not snow-related. Sadly, it’s the times we live in. It’s a precautionary step to block side streets from would-be terrorists. They’re even using Humvee personnel carriers (not sure if I can say they’re armored as I don’t see turrets or guns poking through the tops of the vehicles) to block streets.

    1. Thank you, Joshua. And they certainly had flaws and often were rhe first to acknowledge them

I was wondering where you were going with the snowplow. Indeed…a sad sign of the times.

  13. Day trip to the beach in Wells. It’s not wells beach, one just to the north.

Car read 92F on rt 1, here as I sit with feet in the ocean, it’s pleasantly cooler.

Ocean is warm !!!!! With high tide later, the tidal flats are borderline hot and adding their heat as the tide comes in.

      1. Thanks JpDave and Vicki, we had a great time. I even got in the water for a while ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. At Block Island spending the day biking around the island. Beautiful here but watching quite the lightning show over the ocean from a thunderstorm just to our east. Storm is pretty much dead stationary over the water!

      1. Thankfully looks like it is raining itself out and sliding to our south.

Saw a bunch of seals earlier at the northern tip of island. They were literally 15 feet from me. Amazing. I will post some pictures later.

        1. I love seals. I have seen them in wild before and I think they are awesome creatures. Look forward to photos.

  15. It’s getting really bad here yet again. Still not as bad as yesterday. Only 87 in the house instead the 91 or yesterday.

Just made a batch of home Made Lemon Aide. Yum Yum Yum
My wife got the recipe from the internet, and I adjusted it to taste. I have it down.

If anyone is interested, I’d be happy to post the recipe. ๐Ÿ˜€

      1. Sure.

It’s easy to make, a bit more bothersome to clean up afterwards.

Requires a juicer and it doesn’t have to be fancy. I picked on up at Roche Bros for something like $5-10, can’t remember exactly but it was cheap and works beautifully.

        So standard batch.

1 cup of fresh squeezed lemon juice (approx 4 lemons)
        1 cup of suger
        4 cups water

        1. Over low heat mix 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar. Slowly dissolve completely and let cool some.
        2. While sugar is dissolving squeeze 1 cup of lemon juice (approx 4 lemons).
        3. Pour 3 cups COLD water in a pitcher or other container.
        4. Add the 1 cup of lemon juice
        5. Stir in the syrup (dissolved sugar and water)

VIOLA, you’re done (except for the clean up).
Refrigerate and then serve on ice when you are ready.

Honestly, it is out of this world and so simple to make.

Good luck if you try it.

Oh by the way, vary the amount of water and sugar to adjust
tartness and sweetness to your taste. My wife and I find
the ratios above to be perfect, but we all have different tastes.

        1. I copied and saved. Iโ€™ll look for a juicer at roche bros in Marshfield. Thank you.

  16. This weather has knocked the crap out of my wife. She can’t even make to a friends
house for a pool party. Go Figure.

We sit and listen to the whir of the air conditioners.

    1. I’m sorry about that. This weather is rough on some people. I hope your wife can find comfort in this weekend’s forecast.

My mother can’s stand the heat. Spoke to her last night, and she asked “Josh, you’re a weather buff, when is the heat going to end?” I told her that while I like weather I don’t have the skill to predict it. But, from expert sources I had heard that it would break by the weekend. It’s remarkable my mother is still alive, by the way. She’s survived quite a number of serious illnesses in recent year, so most likely she’ll survive this heat wave.

      1. So Sorry Joshua. The heat really can affect people is serious ways.
It so weird, because they always say check on the elderly.
Hah. My wife and I are officially “elderly”. ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

      2. Sorry, Joshua and JPD. Oddly, this time it also seems to be affecting me….certainly not as badly as Mrs OS. It is as if the AC artificial cooling messes up your system somehow.

It seems a bit counterintuitive and more than slightly amusing that I Find it easier to sit out on frigid winter nights than in heat of summer.

        1. I don’t find it so. Mrs. OS had trouble breathing
yesterday and her skin was hot to the touch, even while sitting in AC, which was most of the time.

I don’t feel sick, but I am somewhat lethargic in this weather. I am not motivated to do anything at all.

          1. I am never uncomfortable in the cold but my body has trouble of late regulating to heat. My heart aches for Mrs OS because it is such an extreme. In addition to feeling so horrible, it has to be scary. Does she have asthma or an inhaler or isnโ€™t it that kind of difficulty breathing.

            1. Yes and yes, but she won’t use the inhaler.
She is allergic to inhaler ingredients.
Fortunately, asthma is not too severe, but it shows in this weather. Thank you.

    2. Sorry the heat is so hard on your wife old salty that really stinks . As I said earlier in the week I love the heat but feel badly for those who are significantly impacted by it . My wifeโ€™s dad was severely impacted by it when he was alive .

      1. We’re going to try and get to DQ this evening. Not sure
she is even up to getting ready, but we’ll see how it goes.
Also depends upon the fireworks and location. Have to check
        on that now.

        1. Fireworks at Bay Point tonight, so I dunno. At very least would have to take alternate route in and out of DQ. ๐Ÿ˜€

    3. Sorry JpDave and Joshua. Hope your wife and mother, respectively, can feel as good as possible during this heat wave.

  17. Hey Mark, it looks like some of the residual rain from that T-storm backed in
right over the island. Hope u didn’t get too wet.

    1. Not too shabby, is it?
Wish they could fare better against the Yankees. Plenty of time, so we shall see. Meanwhile, keep stacking up the WINS!!

      1. Over the past 20 years the Sox and Yankees have been remarkably evenly matched: Pretty much a .500 record in head-to-head games over that period. I don’t think this year will be any different. The Sox are 4 and 5 thus far against the Yankees this year. I expect them to go 5 and 4 in their remaining games and so split the season series.

        1. Sounds about right, however, IF they have to face
them in the playoffs, I FEAR them big time.
If it is the one game play in, then we best hope
Sale can pitch. And if he does and they win, then what?
Best bet is for Sox to WIN the AL East.

      1. He’s got great stuff. Too much of a nibbler sometimes, and too deliberate. Could learn something from Sale.

        1. Unfortunately, Price cannot beat the Yankees which makes him totally useless if we have to face them in the playoffs especially.

  18. I am seeing dew points lowering in Eastern sections.
    61 at Logan
    57 at Lawrence
    57 at Manchester, NH

      1. Youโ€™re right. I had not looked in a bit. It is 93 here but DP is 63 from 77 yesterday.

  19. Down to 84 at the airport, but NO cooling reaching us.

89 in the house, compared to 91 yesterday. Decreased dew point is making all
    the difference in the world.

  20. To clear up any confusion, this is my 29th consecutive July 4* in Boston.

    * Festivities were postponed until July 5 in 1992 due to unseasonably cold and wet weather and we’re pushed forward to July 3 in 2015 due to a tropical storm coming the next day.

  21. Boston harbor buoy temp : 73.4F

I believe it, the water at wells had to be 65 to 70. It was so comfortable.

  22. 76 with 74 DP. Everything outside is wet and mosquitoes are out in Force. Iโ€™m recording the pops to watch with oldest grand so listening to Peter Paul and Mary instead.

Sleep well whw family. Happy America

  23. Happy 4th everyone!!

JPDave – I hope Mrs. OS is feeling better. She is very lucky to have a partner who obviously is so concerned, diligent and caring. And from how you speak of her on the blog sounds like youโ€™re lucky as well.

Vickie – thanks for posting that great song. I tend to focus on music pre 1974 so hadnโ€™t heard it but am glad I did – it pretty much sums it up right now.

Finally for all – I know there has been mention of a WHW gathering this summer or fall. If we need a place to go Joe and I are happy to host the group at our new home in Harvard. Itโ€™s a pretty big house with a finished basement with a bar, pool table, etc. We had a party here recently with about 60 people and there was plenty of space. Just let us know if itโ€™s helpful.

    1. Hi Mama. Happy fourth. I prefer 60s music but my kids listen to a lot of current country and Iโ€™ve learned to like it a lot.

That is a really nice offer for a get together. Iโ€™m hoping we can get something going after vacations, etc.

  24. So first, I have found 3 giant lobsters. Second, why is this Maine water so dam warm. I could jump right in.

    1. It’s the equivalent of a “blocking pattern” in the Atlantic water right now. North is warm, south is chilly (which is why the amount of tropicals coming from the CV region will be below average). Water at Hampton Beach was pleasantly mild this week. ๐Ÿ™‚

  25. Good morning. Starting out nasty.
    79 here with dp 71

81 at the airport with DP 73

I see a number of 75 dps in the latest observations! YUUUUUUUUCKKKKKKKK!!!!

  26. Certainly not to the extent or maybe consistency of the last 6 days, but after a 2-3 day reprieve, the 00z EURO and GFS have many days with 850 mb temps of 15 to 18C.

The summer version of the Hudson Bay vortex is strong enough to squash a heat ridge per se, but projected to be weak enough to keep the westerlies far enough north to continually grab pieces of warmth from the central us and send them our way.

  27. Recovered from a 17 hour excursion yesterday! What a blast, literally, and figuratively. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Updating…

  28. Interesting to note that the temperature rise this morning has slowed some.
only 84 at the airport, 85 here and 86 at Norwood.

Perhaps the temps won’t go too high. Be nice if capped at 90 and they
    don’t go to 95+.

Even with a sea breeze yesterday, was still 93 here and the temp inside the house got to 90, one degree less than the brutal day before.

    Inside temp now 86.

  29. From the SPC regarding Friday

    …New England…
Mid-level cyclonic flow will further amplify over the northeastern
US Friday, owing to the approach of both a weak/sheared leading
impulse during the morning and then a sharper shortwave trough later
in the day. In conjunction with the leading impulse, a surface
trough will sweep across New England Friday morning. Owing to
convergence along the trough and weak warm advection, convection
will likely be ongoing early in the period. Early timing and
widespread cloud debris will limit boundary-layer destabilization,
and low/mid-level lapse rates will be generally be moist/neutral. In
turn, updraft acceleration should be dampened considerably. However,
925-850mb flow around 25-30 kt may enhance low-level shear
sufficiently for brief/weak mesocyclones in stronger convective
elements. A threat for localized damaging winds or even a brief
tornado may evolve, but should shift offshore by early afternoon.
The cold front itself will cross the region thereafter, but
subsidence/drying in the wake of the prior disturbance should keep
    any afternoon convection isolated/shallow.

  30. Logan just popped to 86 and Norwood 88. Perhaps the big HEAT is still on.
I need to run out in a few. YUCK!
