Sunday Forecast

7:41AM

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 7-11)
No big changes, just some tweaks on this Sunday morning update. After Saturday’s damp start, the weather turned out very nice across the area. Today will be another nice one, but the location of high pressure allows sea breezes to develop, some coastal areas will be cooler today. Then we enter the dank tank as high pressure in eastern Canada and waves of low pressure that initially want to travel toward the St. Lawrence via New York do the typical spring detour and warp themselves in a way to travel just south of southern New England. This combination is a chilly one with dominant cloudiness and some wet weather as the lows pass by, with the greatest threats of rain coming Monday during the day and Tuesday at night. Still thinking the Red Sox get their home opener in, but it will be in less than pleasant conditions, as discussed on previous blog posts. By Wednesday, we should get into a little more of a northerly air flow with some drying. High pressure over the region on Thursday will provide fair and somewhat milder weather.
Forecast details…
TODAY: Increasing clouds. Highs 55-62 except cooling back through the 50s along the coast. Wind light variable with sea breezes.
TONIGHT: Cloudy. Rain arrives overnight. Lows 38-45. Wind light N.

MONDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Areas of fog and drizzle. Lows 38-45. Wind NE 5-15 MPH.
TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Areas of drizzle. Patchy fog. Highs 45-52 coast, 52-59 interior. Wind NE 5-15 MPH.
TUESDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Chance of rain. Areas of drizzle/fog. Lows 40-47. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Variably cloudy. Highs 48-55. Wind N to NW 10-20 MPH.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 35-42. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.
THURSDAY: Partly cloudy. Highs 52-59, coolest coast. Wind light variable with sea breezes.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 12-16)
Brief warm-up possible on April 12 before a shot of chilly air returns for April 13 followed by a quick warm-up on April 14. Watching for another storm to impact the region in the April 15-16 time frame with rain and possible wind.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 17-21)
More chilly and possible damp weather to start the period then a trend to drier and milder thereafter.

  1. Thanks TK!

For the first time since March 9, I was in daylight from start to finish in my commute to work. The first Sunday in April is when DST used to begin until Congress got STUPID in 2007.

    1. I liked it more in early April, TBH. I think any time starting the first weekend after the Equinox is fine. πŸ™‚

  2. Thanks TK !

Feel like I’m seeing buds on the trees already.

I know last year in early April was cold with a few episodes of snow.

Conversely, we’ve had a lot of sun and above average temps now for last 10 days or so.

Think leaves are coming out early this year.

    1. I thought I could barely see buds on our tres in yard a couple of days ago, Tom. This morning they are very obvious. Amazing what a difference a couple of days will make

      1. It sure is !

The green grass and the buds on the trees, along with yesterday’s temps have really helped me. It’s nice to see the various colors of nature returning.

        1. As far as the trees, I have only seen very subtle hints of swelling of the buds. Nothing very definitive as of yet.

    2. Seeing lots of buds here….maples and others. It will still take a while to see anything really green though.

      1. We are having our old in-ground pool demolished in the next few weeks. We don’t use it anymore and are going to be doing a 1-3 year process of rehabbing our back yard. Looking forward to it.

        1. It can be bittersweet when something from the past has to go but it’s exciting to look forward to the new. I felt a bit of that having to take apart the border for the garden my father used for so many years. But I’m not a gardener. My brother down the street has his own garden. There was no reason to keep this one. I’ve decided to kind of let the border markings erase themselves naturally. Each season that goes by there is a little less evidence of it. But the old compost pile is still there, for now. My dad built an enclosure with cinder blocks over a spot where 4 large cottonwood trees had stood for years but were removed about 1980 due to age, although 1 of them remained until 1984 after it started to die following a 1982 lightning strike. Ironically he had tried to garden before in that area without a lot of success. But after the lightning strike in the yard, the crops grew incredibly well. I firmly believe that lightning bolt is a big part of the reason.

          1. Bittersweet story, TK. And truly interesting re the lightning strike.

My kids gave me bricks years ago for my mom and dad that said in memory of. I thought of those when you said the four corners of your dads border markings.

          2. It will be interesting to see what remains of the pool (and the memories…although to be honest we never really used it all that much in the 12 years we’ve been here).

  3. A tree down the street is showing its blossoms (not sure what kind of tree but it’s a flowering tree).

    1. wow. I am curious whether the forsythia at our old house has bloomed. WE don’t have any here and I don’t see a lot in the area. My oldest has a border planting of them, but she has put a quarantine marker around her street so I can’t check. Some of us have colds and two of those now have the stomach bug so she doesn’t want us in the town let alone the neighborhood. I’m not sure she will even talk to us on the phone….we are a petri dish in the making πŸ˜‰

  4. I am beginning to wonder now from the posters here, that there is a subtle difference in tree flowering/budding from just inland (early) to the coastline (later). While the fall foliage is the reverse.

    1. Depends on the type of tree/bush, but that can be somewhat true. Interior areas are generally warmer earlier, so that would make some sense. But like fall foliage, a lot of it is driven by sun angle, so it somewhat limits the temperature impact, though not completely.

    2. I’m about 1 mile from the water and 3 miles or so from Hull and I do notice the difference.

  5. Good afternoon and thank you TK.
My accurite is reading 70 and the Oregon Scientific is reading 67.
either way. not stinken sea breeze here (yet anyway) πŸ™‚

  6. Spring is here.
Went fishing this morning. Water still cold as evidenced by no SUN FISH! YEAH!
Caught 27 yellow perch and 5 largemouth Bass. caught them in fast water. Seems
to be a Spring ritual for this species. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  7. If the 12z EURO at 216 hrs ever comes close to verifying, somewhere in western New England at 1,000 ft or higher is going to get a decent wet snowstorm.

It may be rain to wet snow scenario in central areas as well.

    1. And right into eastern areas at hr 240.

I do not approve of this run.

That storm sends cool air down into the Carolinas … me no like πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  8. It’s a beautiful spring day. I may not be a fan of spring, but I appreciate a weekend like this.

Was a nice day for the Greek parade and fest in Boston. Drew a large crowd. Greek music and language are so interesting to me. The language sounds like a mixture of Russian, Hebrew, and Arabic to me. The music definitely reminds me of Israeli and Arab folk melodies.

Let’s hope the fickle April weather brings out the talents we know are hidden within these Red Sox. History is not on their side, however. While it’e very early, only one team has ever started 2-8 and even made the playoffs. They (Cincinnati) were knocked out in the first round. In recent memory, the Oakland A’s of 2001 turned out to be a dominant team (102 wins) after an 8-17 start. But, they were not as bad as 2-8 to begin the season. I think really bad starts have a psychological impact on a team more than anything else. Sure, you can make up ground. It’s a 162 game schedule. But you realize you’re not as good as thought. And confidence is everything in sports.

      1. We shall see, indeed. Pitching is the name of the game. And what worries me most about the Sox is their starting pitching. Are they bad pitchers? No. But, some (Eovaldi, Porcello, and Price) were used last October – because of an erratic bullpen – in ways that put significant strain on their arms. Eovaldi’s splitter hasn’t worked this season at all. His fastball has been off as well. Porcello’s sinker hasn’t sunk, and his fastball has little life. Price has looked okay, but not strong, either. Sale may have inflammation or something bothering him, as he just looks like a totally different pitcher.

    1. I agree bad starts can have a psychological impact. It’s always been my theory that great starts, especially with the Red Sox, do as well. They’ve had a tendency to get cocky and give away the store during the last half of the season. I’ve said this here for years so it’s nothing new. Either way….if you enjoy baseball, my best advice is to enjoy and support your team.

  9. Coming home Red Sox got teams they should be able to handle playing the Blue Jays and Orioles. They should have a winning record on this home stand playing these teams.

    1. Should… But that can be like forecasting 60s for the home opener because that’s what the models had. πŸ˜‰

  10. On paper they should have a winning home stand but as we all know games are not played on paper. Looking at some of the computer models going to be quite chilly for the home opener.

  11. Vicki, it’s good advice. I enjoy baseball no matter what. I liked it in 2012 when the Sox were in the cellar. Same in 2014 and 2015. I just love the game. It’s an added bonus when `your’ team is on top of the world, or at least competitive. Makes for a more complete summer and fall. The hot summers of 1977 and 1978 remain my favorite, in part because of the Red Sox and Yankee rivalry. I went to so many games those two years. Bleacher seats were $2; coke 50 cents; ice cream bar 50 cents. There were plenty of `scorchers’ up there in sections 35 and 36. I got way too much sun, with way too little sun screen (mostly Solarcaine after I got sunburned). Lost my voice yelling at Mickey Rivers and Reggie Jackson (he scared the crap out of me – such a clutch hitter). I remember the mammoth homeruns (by Rice and Evans) clanking off the back wall behind section 35 (that wall extension has since been removed).

  12. Game time temp at Fenway on Tuesday, about 44 with a wind from the NE 8-15 MPH. Overcast with patchy drizzle. As the game goes on the rain chance increases gradually. I do think they will get the game in, however.

      1. Not for Tuesday. If we see any flakes that will be behind the system Wednesday when there is cold air aloft for some rain/snow showers. It will actually be pretty mild above us while the surface is cold Monday & Tuesday.

  13. Busted up my wrist and thumb biking, I wish people learn the rules of the bike trails I was going about 17mph and this biker cut me off with no bell or saying passing on your left. Cut 4 feet in front of me. Didn’t even stop to check if I was ok.

    1. I have observed some bikers traveling exceedingly fast on those trails like they are in a race. And they get angry when you don’t get out of their way. Entitled much? Hope you feel better and heal up soon.
