Sunday Forecast

8:20AM

DAYS 1-5 (MAY 12-16)
Moisture overcomes dry air for some wetter weather, still focused in areas to the south, at times today as one wave of low pressure passes south of the region. A second low will come up from the southwest Monday and Tuesday and pass very slowly, bringing unseasonably cold air and more wet weather, some of which may fall in the frozen form in some locations. Yes, it can happen in May. Slow midweek improvement but not total improvement as upper level low pressure hangs around.
Forecast details…
TODAY: Mainly cloudy. Periods of rain favoring southern areas. Rain may mix with sleet in some higher elevations. Highs 50-57. Wind light SE to E.
TONIGHT: Mainly cloudy. Lows 41-48. Wind light E.
MONDAY: Overcast. Areas of drizzle especially coastal locations. Rain arriving later in the day. Highs 45-52. Wind N to NE 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY NIGHT: Overcast. Rain and drizzle. Areas of fog. Lows 38-45. Wind NE 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.
TUESDAY: Overcast with periods of rain, may mix with sleet/snow for a time in the morning higher elevations. Highs 40-47. Wind NE to N 10-20 MPH.
TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Lows 38-45. Wind N 5-15 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Scattered rain showers. Highs 50-57. Wind N 10-20 MPH.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Isolated rain showers. Lows 40-47. Wind N 5-15 MPH.
THURSDAY: Variably cloudy. Scattered rain showers. Highs 50-57. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (MAY 17-21)
Upper level low pressure may hang around for a couple days before being replaced by a flat ridge of high pressure. This period should be mostly dry, but not completely rain-free, though timing is uncertain on disturbances and shower threats, so will have to fine-tune that. The temperature trend should be warming, as it starts out below normal and ends near to above normal.

DAYS 11-15 (MAY 22-26)
Dry and mild start and end should flank a period of cooler/wet weather as low pressure passes during the middle of the period.

  1. Thank you, TK. Happy Mother’s day to all of our moms. TK, please with your mom a happy day.

  2. Rain in Sutton. And it brought a memory of a very special mother in law. I lose every single umbrella I buy. Except….one that was in the trunk of the 1987 Camry Macs parents gave to my oldest. My MILs umbrella was in the trunk and seems to be the only one I don’t lose. Happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms in heaven.

  3. Thank you TK.
To all moms on the blog, have a wonderful day!!!!!
    You deserve it!!!

  4. What a dreary morning.
Looks like the forecast for Dry went South OR should I say it came North.

0.10 inch in ye ole rain bucket so far.

What a MISERABLE day for all of our Mothers out there. Please make the best of it.

  5. Thanks, TK…

Happy Mothers Day, to my Mom, faithful follower of WHW!
Happy Mothers Day to all moms, step-moms, nanas and to all who bestow their maternal love!!! We love you!

    72 the high here yesterday!
44 now with the fireplace on!

0.16″ of rain in the bucket.

    Enjoy the day, Moms!

    Go Bruins!

  6. Well this is exactly what I had in mind when I talked about the snow producing potential of this pattern. I think even a month earlier and we’d have been looking at snow right into the coastal plain. As it is, the higher elevations up north should see some hefty totals in the coming days.

Like TK, I do think we’re finally going to get this pattern to work for us, not against, by the middle/end of this week and beyond. Definitely drier, and with a warming trend.

  7. It’s 39.5 at my house and I’ve got some very wet snowflakes mixing in with the heavier rain, believe it or not!!!! This is may 12th mother’s day right? Geeez, as much as I love snow I’m ready for some milder weather.

    1. That is insanity!!! Crap fest!

It is even 45 here in JP. Pretty damn chilly if you ask me.

  8. One plus from the miserable weather is that employees show up to work…..
    Several “sick calls” yesterday

  9. Hoping for a happy day for all the mothers out there. The heart and soul of many families.

Did the 10k up in Vermont yesterday. Turned out to be a 11.5k. Sounds like a small difference, but when you’re running up a mountain it’s a pretty significant difference. It was cold at the start – around 43F – but it warmed up a bit and the sun came out later in the day. The Vermonters I spoke to said it was a very long winter. For some it’s not over yet, as this week’s snow will remind them. I kidded by saying that winter will be over by June 21st.

Today’s a reminder of how fickle spring can be. I’ve got my turtleneck on. It’s raw. It’s New England. Will it get warm this month? Yes. It’ll probably overshoot into the 90s at a certain point.

Peggy Lipton passed away. She was a young 72. Always beautiful.

    1. Very sad. Too young I had the pleasure of being on the set of the Mod Squad in the early 70s. We were visiting a family friend and I asked if I could meet Alias Smith and Jones cast and the Mod Squad. I loved both shows. The cast was so gracious. On the way to its set, we walked through the indoor set of a brand new tv show that I could have cared less about because I wanted to meet Michael Cole

That was the set of a TV show named something like MASH 🙂

  10. Kind of funny though. We just had a pretty fabulous weather week and today the population is re-traumatized from a return to unsettled weather.

And then add some rare frozen May precip to the mix. Well, the last time for SNE was probably 2002. It doesn’t do it often here. Oh NO, it may happen TWO times in THREE days! Snowpocalypse 2019! We’re all doomed!

Nice weather pattern returns after this stretch.

    1. You’re so right. We have been fortunate lately. Anyways, I don’t see a nice stretch occurring until late week due instability from the stubborn upper level low Wednesday and even into Thursday. Do you agree?

  11. Thanks TK and Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mom’s!

Just dreadful here in Coventry today…38.9F with steady moderate rain all day and 0.65″ so far. It would actually be nicer out if it just flipped to snow 🙂 Havent seen any flakes yet but I’m watching….

    1. Thanks, Joshua. It is a nice memory. Thank you for letting us know about Peggy Lipton’s passing. Very sad

  12. Feels like icy rain. I know it’s not, but it feels that way. I did some shopping and carried two large grocery bags for about a mile. Hands were cold by the time I got home.

Heard a lot of peeping and high-pitched chirping in the trees in my neighborhood. I think a lot of the noise was from the little ones in the nests waiting for Mom or Dad to come home with a worm or some other meal. They’re probably huddling together, too, to stay warm.

  13. 3k NAM really wallops the Greens, most of the State of NH and western ME tomorrow night with heavy wet snow….

    Snowmap:

    https://www.tropicaltidbits.com/analysis/models/?model=nam3km&region=neus&pkg=asnow&runtime=2019051212&fh=60

Granted that map in 10:1 but this is becoming concerning for those areas where trees are even partially leafed out like central/southern NH and southern ME!

    1. I would have to think that the Berkshires, hills of Worcester County, and perhaps even the hills of NW/NE CT and northern RI would be in play for accumulating snow as well, especially considering what is occurring today. This second storm system looks even colder, and precip will be falling at night.

  14. TK, thank you for your forecast and commentary.

Mark, thanks for sharing the links to the snow happening in the hills and mountains to our north and west.

Bruins are doing their part in chasing another title for the region. After all, it’s been a 3 month title drought.

      1. Ya know what….if might not have been what was expected. But had it not rained, I would not have had a special memory of a woman I loved darn near as much as my own mom. And on mother’s day.

There is always a positive. But you have to be open to it

I apologize if this is not readable. I have too many happy sad tears to see what I’m typing.

        1. That’s quite alright. I understood it. And today’s weather gave me a really neat photograph, actually a few…

  15. Sox are 16 and 6 since April 19th and have outscored their opponents by almost 70 runs during that time. 3 games out of first place and climbing steadily. For all those who jumped ship and panicked, everything is ok :).

And a Bruins routs of the Hurricanes!

    1. Sox are a great team. They had a very bad, disorganized start and got into their own heads. They pulled themselves out of it. Will it be smooth sailing from here? No. They will have other rough stretches, but I think this team will do OK and has a decent shot at going very far come the playoffs.

The Bruins: 5-2 and 6-2. Today may as well have been 6-0 as the first Carolina goal was one in which Rask could do nothing. It was a 50/50 and he guessed left and the puck went right as he was blinded from the shot. The second Carolina goal was just an oops when Rask tried to clear it. It happens. The Carolina Hurricanes have been downgraded to the Tropical Storms. Further weakening is possible through Tuesday. 😛

  16. CFS followers…

It’s kind of been all over the place. A few days ago it had December and January similar, and now it has December as an absolute blowtorch followed by a cold January. This model goes through spasms like this from time to time.

      1. I absolutely love the GP2 camera. I am excited for the GP3 which is next on my list. It is several leaps better than this one.

          1. I guess we’ll see. 🙂 I am going to put up a few more pic links below in a short bit.

  17. Just ducky…for the first time today, it stopped precipitating so we can’t have sleet or snow
