Wednesday Forecast

7:21AM

DAYS 1-5 (JUNE 5-9)
A frontal boundary will sit across northern MA and southern NH today into Thursday, and may waver around a little playing havoc with the temperatures near it. This front will also be the running board for a few showers and possible thunderstorms during today, which will become more frequent tonight into Thursday, before the front pushes to the south as low pressure moves along it then to our northeast. Thursday night into Friday a push of drier air gets the wet weather out of here and replaces it with fair weather, setting up a great weekend with high pressure in control of the weather.
Forecast details…
TODAY: Mostly cloudy. Isolated to scattered showers and a slight risk of thunderstorms, favoring southern NH and northern MA. Highs 60-67 north, 68-75 south. Wind N 5-15 MPH northern areas, SW 5-15 MPH but higher gusts central and southern areas.
TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Showers likely. Chance of thunderstorms. Humid. Lows 60-67. Wind variable, mostly SW in southern areas, 5-15 MPH with higher gusts.
THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy. Showers likely. Chance of thunderstorms. Humid. Highs 68-75. Wind S to SW 10-20 MPH.
THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Showers ending. Less humid late. Lows 55-62. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
FRIDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 71-78. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 48-53 interior, coolest valleys, 53-58 elsewhere. Wind light variable.
SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 71-78, but cooling back to upper 60s coast afternoon. Wind light variable to NW but coastal sea breezes.
SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 77-84, cooler in some coastal areas especially Cape Cod. Wind variable to W 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (JUNE 10-14)
Warm start to period then a cooling trend. Unsettled weather days are most likely to be June 11 with a cold front and June 13 with another low pressure area passing through the region. Other days mainly dry.

DAYS 11-15 (JUNE 15-19)
A generally zonal (west to east) jet stream pattern with mean ridge of high pressure centered west of New England. This pattern sends a few chances of showers/thunderstorms this way but also brings fair and seasonably warm weather in between.

  1. Thanks TK !

Every year, I’ve tried to “identify”, for my own curiosity, when summer-like weather has set in on a consistent basis.

Could it be June 5th for 2019 ?? That would be very early !!

But, I feel like there are a lot of days coming, starting with today, with highs of 75F or higher. (well, especially Boston south today πŸ™‚ )

Certainly, its very possible to still have a 2 or 3 day stretch still with grey skies, a northeast wind and temps in Boston in the 50s.

  2. Good morning and thank you TK.
Today actually had a Summer feel to it. Very nice out. Warm, but not too warm.

I missed Eric last night, but my wife told me he was talking about the possibility
of big thunderstorms overnight tonight. I just looked at the parameters for the NAMS
and the HRRR. Possibility of T-storms? Yes. Big Bad Boomers? not so much, although 3KM NAM has marginal tornado inland and marginal severe near the coast.
This is from Pivotal and imho, their severe potential is generally over done.

We’ll see what the 12Z runs show.

    1. NWS discussion….

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/…
      * Potential for a few strong storms and heavy rainfall tonight *

Interesting setup for tonight as short wave and surface low
approach from lower Great Lakes. Doesn`t look like best setup
for severe weather as several fields are not collocated with
one another but per CAMs we should have an environment featuring
elevated CAPE, marginal 0-3km shear, weak mid level lapse
rates, and increasing PWATs. Models show their differences in
each of these fields with NAM most aggressive as usual, but it
has little support from SREF and HREF.

Situation looks to favor a round of strong or even a few severe
storms this evening, primarily in western New England from about
9 PM to 1 AM with strong winds being main threat (possibly small
hail as well per model soundings). Am a little concerned we will
see enough MUCAPE to increase severe threat, but would like to
see more support from HREF first. Overnight, expect to see a
transition to locally heavy rainfall across RI and SE MA
overnight on nose of strong 40-50kt low level jet working its
way up coast. It`s possible a few locations in those areas pick
up a quick 2″ of rain given position of theta-e ridge and PWATs
      of +2-3 SD.

That said, not overly confident in either scenario right now to
issue any statements or Flash Flood Watches.

  3. Thank you, TK

A lot of field days this week. The clouds today are a good thing.

Kindergarten gets out tomorrow and the rest of Sutton on June 11

    1. awwwww

We don’t have bunnies πŸ™ Or squirrels πŸ™‚ I think the foxes and coyotes and now the local bobcat keep the populations under control.

      1. We also have a turkey that likes to sit IN our birdbath. I keep waiting for it to tip over on her.

      2. I have Bunnies, skunks, raccoons, river otters, a couple of ducks who have claimed the pool area as theirs lol, grey and red squirrels which by the way they are not suppose to live together. Marsh and redtail hawks and I saw a bald eagle the other day. I have yet to see the bats this year but last year they were back in numbers after a few years of only a couple to even none. I also know I have a fishercat

        1. We have fishers also. I have yet to see one and it is one creature I’d rather not see. I’m am sorry to miss the bobcat though.

  4. I am feeling that increase in the humidity this afternoon but thankfully this spell of humid weather won’t last long.

  5. Thank you, TK.

Yes, today feels like summer. Sweatville. Not a fan of the humidity, but we’re down to about 100 days to go in which it’s possible to be hot and humid. I don’t wish the time away. In fact, I try to enjoy every moment I can, even when it’s hot and humid.

  6. TK, thanks for sending the youtube clip of Men at Work. I can reminisce about my youth.

By the way, Amundsen station (South Pole) must be getting brutally cold right about now. They’re entering the trough of winter, and that trough is even longer than what is experienced by Santa Claus at the North Pole.

    1. I have always loved Men at Work’s music…so much more than the few hits they are remembered for. They pulled off some dark song lyrics with upbeat music. An interesting mix. And the drummer (who is now a physics professor) used his drums more like a regular instrument. He wasn’t the most gifted drummer to ever play but he was rather innovative.

      1. I can’t think of Men at Work without thinking about marshmallows. I saw the band from the lawn section of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. I guess they were selling marshmallows at the concession stand. People started throwing them, and the whole thing kind of “snowballed” into bigger and bigger globs of marshmallow and grass.

It was all fun and games until they got in someones hair!

    2. This month female Emperor penguins start laying their eggs and pass them on to their male mates to sit on. A tough winter ahead down there. πŸ™‚

  7. I’d really enjoy a good old fashioned thunderstorm tonight. It would go a long way in cheering me up. TK….anything you can do πŸ˜‰

    1. Looks like TK came through! At least in Harvard – some incredibly vivid lightening shows here tonight!

  8. Beautiful evening!!! Can’t beat it.
Lovely day. I was out walking mid-afternoon. Fantastic!! Not too hot and not too humid. Yes, the increase in humidity could be felt, but it was fine.
In line at DQ. Waiting on
a blizzard. One way to get one.

    1. Indeed, that blizzard doesn’t show up on the GFS, Euro, HRRR, or even the experimental models. It’s just a DQ bomb.

  9. Philip, penguins are fascinating, aren’t they. I watched a Richard Attenborough narrated documentary on penguins. I was captivated.

  10. Matt, you have some serious wildlife in your backyard, or at least in your neighborhood. That’s great. It’s one thing I miss living in the city. I appreciate the wildlife that’s here, but it’s limited. I have grown to appreciate baby pigeons. Pigeons will nest almost anywhere. And I saw a nest the other day under the Red Line bridge overpass. They must be nervous little fella’s with all that noise and rattling from the trains.

  11. Petrichor and lightning bolts !!
    hot tar and humidity
    downpours and rain gutters
    summer must be near
