Wednesday Forecast

7:15AM

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 2-6)
The only change to the forecast for this update is slowing the timing of the rain down for later Thursday to early Friday, shortening its duration slightly, and making it lighter. There is a saying used by some meteorologists: “All systems fail in a drought.” Well, we may not be in drought quite yet but if such events become habitual then we’ll be there sooner rather than later. The remainder of the forecast remains generally unchanged, from today’s warm start / chilly finish to the weekend that looks really nice but with 2 very chilly mornings and a risk of some areas seeing frost.
Forecast details…
TODAY: Mostly cloudy. Scattered to general rain showers. Humid. Highs 70-77 morning, then falling afternoon. Wind W 10-20 MPH morning, shifting to N from north to south during the morning and early afternoon.
TONIGHT: Partial clearing. Patchy fog. Lows 46-53. Wind NE 5-15 MPH.
THURSDAY: Partial sunshine. Highs 55-62. Wind E 5-15 MPH.
THURSDAY NIGHT: Overcast. Periods of rain. Areas of drizzle and fog. Wind NE 5-15 MPH, higher gusts near the coast.
FRIDAY: Overcast with rain tapering off early morning. Breaking clouds later morning and afternoon. Highs 55-62. Wind N 10-20 MPH.
FRIDAY NIGHT: Clearing. Areas of fog forming. Risk of frost interior lower elevations. Lows 35-40 interior low elevations, 40-45 elsewhere except 45-50 urban centers. Wind N 5-15 MPH.
SATURDAY: Sun and passing clouds. Highs 56-63. Wind N 5-15 MPH.
SATURDAY NIGHT: Clear. Frost likely away from coastal and urban locations. Lows 30-35 interior lower elevations, 35-40 elsewhere except 40-45 urban centers and immediate shore. Wind calm.
SUNDAY: Sun filtered by high clouds. Highs 60-67. Wind SE to S up to 10 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (OCTOBER 7-11)
October 7 looks breezy and mild with late-day or nighttime rain showers as a cold front moves toward the region. October 8 may start wet then clears out, is breezy but cooler as the front moves offshore and high pressure approaches from the west. High pressure then parks over the region October 9-11 with dry weather, chilly mornings and milder afternoons.

DAYS 11-15 (OCTOBER 12-16)
Wash/rinse/repeat. Early outlook is for a similar set-up, slower-moving, dry weather continuing October 12-13 weekend, a quick warm-up followed by shower threat, then drying with a cool-down by the end of the period.

  1. Thanks TK!

The front won’t make it down here until very late today or tonight. That will result in numerous records being broken, and in some cases, obliterated, as we soar into the 90s.

  2. Good morning and thank you TK.

A few sprinkles overnight. 70 at 7AM this morning. Rather Summer like, eh?

    1. I think it will be well into the 80s as the cold front will be in later today / this evening .

  3. Need some help in regard to late afternoon and evening plans. Approximate time rain will arrive and leave Boston today? Thanks.

    1. I’m not Tk but I do not think we have any rain issue tonight . In fact I’m about to head out at work & soak the flowers down

  4. Captain, you know how much I have been delving into the history of the Azores in recent months. It’s very sad to see that the commercial port of Flores was destroyed by the hurricane.

    1. Indeed. My wife’s great-grandparents and extended family were from Madeira. I would love to travel there some day and see their hometown of Camacha.

  5. 77 now I believe for Boston in full clouds . Just had a sprinkle work through for the second time since 7am

    1. Awful. Multiple fatalities now and 14 injured. My friend was at the airport when it happened and now scrambling to find other flight options. Airport is closed.

  6. For NC Area:

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/…
A progressive pattern in the long term with 2 precipitation
events on tap. The first moves in Thursday night and is out of
here Friday morning. The surface low will move to the south of
the forecast area and should result in around a half inch of
precipitation. The higher terrain above 4000 feet will likely
see 1 to 3 inches of snow.

      1. My father was a pilot who flew B17s over Germany WWIl . Many stories . I am very lucky to be here as I am . I went to Plymouth to see the B17 in real life . I walked all through it . The guys and women there were very devoted to keeping history alive

        1. That is really something! A true American hero.

Many of those planes and crews were lost during
          those bombing raids.

I witnessed a B-17 fly over a couple of times during
my life time. A spectacular sight in the air and they weren’t called the B-17 Flying Fortress for nothing!

    1. We are planning on hiking Saturday in the Whites. I am going to be bringing full winter gear and probably the microspikes to be safe!

    2. coastal, I see what you mean: brilliant autumn foliage, a coating of snow, clouds breaking up… a photographer’s dream. Or in Mark’s case, a hiker’s dream

  7. Just left Stamford from a meeting. It was borderline oppressive down there with sunny skies and the car thermometer reading 92.

    1. You’ll go from that to 30s and humidity-free in the Whites, all in the spate of a couple of days.

Boston didn’t get warm, but it was humid. I ran what was hopefully the last really sweaty jog of the season. People ask me whether I miss it (heat and humidity) on a 10 degree day in January. My answer is no. This said, I love the changes in seasons here. I would not want to live in a place that has no seasonal change.

      1. Classic New England!

I am back in Hartford now. Cloudy but still 86 with a heat index of 89. Not much progress yet with the front across CT.

    1. At least we now know why he’s been missing kicks. Is he done for the season?

Time for tryouts, obviously, or maybe someone off the scrap heap.

      1. Unclear, but I hear on the radio that he has a hip injury that
should have been addressed with surgery in the off season,
but he elected to not do it.

So, IF he has surgery now, most definitely done for the year.
In fact, he may have played his last game in a Patriot’s uniform.

  8. HA HA HA

My David Instruments console just displayed
    “It’s raining cats and dogs” 🙂 🙂 🙂

That’s a new one on me!!
up to 0.11 on the day.

      1. I had made the assumption it may have been an adjustment issue with the new holder, and my statement of sitting someone was never because I didn’t have confidence in him – it would have been just to try something to get him to snap out of it. But now that we know this, which we didn’t before, it makes much more sense.

I’d have never booed him like so many at the stadium did the other day. Granted they didn’t know what was up either, but I still don’t think he deserved to be basically booed off the field. He’s done SO MUCH for this team, like say, for example… the fact he’s the all time leading scorer in team history. 😉

        1. I had wondered about holder also. I knew it was not typical. So thought it has to be an outside force

You know how I feel about booing. Truly disgusts me. He gave the Pats his best so not supporting him when he struggles NO MATTER THE REASON is beyond inexcusable

Sadly, I’m not sure those folks who are not true fans will learn.

It’s one of the few areas I have trouble bending. And that is on me

  9. ECMWF forecast has been very inconsistent run to run regarding early to mid next week. I don’t trust it.

  10. I was off today, but around the CWA…

Philadelphia hit 95 today, their second warmest October day on record and smashing the old record for today of 87. Wilmington, DE hit 98, their hottest ever October day and their warmest temperature of the year. Yes, in October. Two very good ASOS’s also. If anything PHL tends to run a little cool versus surrounding sites although that’s probably a real effect due to its close proximity to the Delaware River.

    1. Hi, WxWatcher. I am always happy to see your posts. Hottest day in October. Not only telling, but yet another record. We used to set them now and then. Every time I turn around now, there is a new one.

      1. Hi Vicki! Today’s heat was definitely impressive here. A daily record on its own doesn’t mean much, but to break one by nearly 10 degrees, or to set an all time monthly record, is always significant.

This type of pattern a couple months ago, especially considering the recent dryness, likely would’ve produced highs of 100-105.

  11. Such sad news about the Collings Foundation’s B-17 crash. This past weekend they were at the Nashua airport, about 15 miles from our house. Both the B-17 and B-24 flew over very low several times.

My youngest son and I went to the show a few times at the Worcester airport. My father was a waist-gunner on the right side of a B-24. Walking through that plane and standing in that very spot was a very moving experience for me.

  12. Well this is very sad also:

DUCK, N.C. (AP) — A top weather forecasting official, who oversaw the government’s prediction centers that track ocean, hurricane and even space conditions, has died in rough seas on North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

William Lapenta, 58, died Monday after lifeguards pulled him from the surf off the coastal town of Duck, local officials said. The National Weather Service had issued a warning earlier Monday about the area’s high risk of rip currents…While the specific reason he ran into trouble isn’t known, Monday’s surf conditions were likely a factor

Lapenta, a native of Nyack, New York, lived in northern Virginia with his wife, Cathy, who is also a meteorologist
