      1. Ah ha. That is the reason for txts I am hearing in the either room on my phone. They don’t arrive on my iPad of course

        I’m wondering about courts

        1. I’m really expecting not much Vicki . I must say I’m a tad bit surprised with the construction & churches . I really hope Baker does not push down on the gas to hard I think it took good leadership for Walsh saying health emergency ( what ever he said ) will be in place until further notice I am not risking it

          1. I’m not expecting much either. But did you see my question to you last night? I read the memo and saw churches and construction in phase one but did not see anything that said phase one would start right away. I’m quite anxious to see his presser.

I do have a lot of confidence that whatever he does will be measured and well researched. I could be very wrong but hope I am not

  1. My son drives from RI to Boston every day from approximately 4 am-4 pm. He said traffic is gaining so,e during those times but is very very light compared to what it was before covid. This am he just breezed right in.

I’m thinking the increase may have a lot to do with folks going for rides to get out of the house. Philip, you said you are seeing an increase on public?

  2. Likely the biggest development so far in the fight against COVID-19 as it appears Moderna has won the race to a vaccine. There are still more trials it has to go through, but this is the best news we could’ve gotten this morning. If all goes well with the remaining stages of trial, this vaccine should be available early next year.

  3. I feel for the Governor, especially today.

He has his most difficult task to date.

Make a decision that is going to be safe and yet, make a decision that shows some instinct that, I think a majority of the public is ready for a small step forward.

Tough balance, but he has shown really good leadership and I think he’ll get it right.

    1. I’ve been thinking the very same. The most difficult part is no one really knows what is right.

    2. Agree Tom today’s statement is a really big one & two days after that ridiculous show of disrespect at his place of residence Saturday.

  4. WxWatcher, indeed, the news this morning is promising regarding Moderna’s vaccine. Phase III trials to commence in July.

The first wave of the epidemic is weakening in intensity across the U.S. Analogous to a low pressure system that loses steam; say, a tropical storm that weakens as it hits colder waters. In this case, I do think the warmer weather is having an impact, not only here but also in Europe. I’m still VERY surprised modelers haven’t explicitly included weather as a variable. If coronavirus acts like other respiratory illnesses its transmissibility in summer will be impacted, gradual reopening notwithstanding. This said, this doesn’t mean there should be aggressive reopening. In fact, being vigilant now will further reduce new cases and make it harder for the virus to make a comeback this fall and winter in the form of a second wave.

  5. I’ll say it again. Baker has done an amazing job. Has he done a perfect job? No. But he’s done the best he can do with what he has. He has not bent to political agendas, on either side. And that is absolutely the truth. This has nothing to do with politics. The only connection to politics that is necessary is the politicians we elected to do the job should be expected to serve us to the best of their ability. In my opinion, some have done this better than others.

I fully respect the right of people to protest, but a protest against Governor Baker’s leadership should not be held in front of his house. That’s highly disrespectful of not only the man’s personal life and of all the people around that area. Those people should be highly ashamed of themselves, but they are not, because they feel powerful. You won’t change minds that closed, so it’s not worth trying.

The re-opening is going just about as I thought it would, back in March. Oh, is TK bragging about “forecasting the pandemic” correctly? No, not at all. But since the beginning I have approached this with logical thought, tried to learn what I did not know, tried to use what I did know applied to the situation. I asked a lot of questions of medical professionals, and STAYED AWAY from political biases, fake news, etc. Some of it was quite amusing to see, but in no way does it impact me. I’m too strong for that. And proud of the strength. So, all along I envisioned us being somewhere around a re-opening in Massachusetts, with due caution, around May 20. You can go back to blogs in mid March to find my statements on this if you’d like. 🙂

I’m optimistic every day, but even more so today. We’re on the right track. But it’s no time to let our guard down, for sure.

    1. I will take a page from TK whose comment above is spot on BTW.

I am not taking credit for forecasting the 2016 election correctly. But I expected trump to be elected. Anyone who knows me also knows I said as much months before the election. At the moment I also believe he will be re-elected. The reasons are not at all the same as Woods’ however.

      1. If he is re-elected, we can flush this country down the toilet. And after the way he handled this pandemic shame on anyone who votes for him. Shame.

  6. Guess the source of this quote:
“So, I’m taking the zinc and the hydroxy. And all I can tell you is, so far I seem to be okay.”

      1. Dangerous, too.

Trump’s weird forays into quackery – whether Clorox or hydrochloroquine – do harm to many people. They worship this guy.

        1. Absolutely true. But he has made it clear he doesn’t care about anyone other than number one

  7. Thank you for your comments, TK. Agree with you.

I do not envy Baker’s position. It’s a very hard one. He’s being cautious. That’s good. Let’s use the time to beat the crap out of this virus in part to prevent a resurgence in the fall.

I wish Baker was running for president. A decent man, not an ideologue, understanding and tolerant of those who he disagrees with politically, and fact-driven.

Today’s U.S. data are encouraging. The virus is having trouble finding hosts, hospitalizations and ICU usage are significantly down almost in every state now, testing positivity is down, too.

On Trump’s re-election, I’ve always believed he will get re-elected and that hasn’t changed much in recent months. I’m certainly not in favor of it. But, he’s ahead or close where he needs to be – key battleground states. Six weeks ago, I thought he was vulnerable. But, Biden’s been uncomfortably absent throughout. A no-show, unfortunately. Yes, partly due to the pandemic. Yet, I also feel as if Biden’s run out of steam. I’m not feeling energy from that camp at all. I can’t stand the energy, the vibe, the persona in Trump, but man he has a tremendous amount of vitality. That’s going to be the determining factor, I believe. Many Americans have normalized Covid-19 deaths, corruption, incompetence, misogyny, coziness with Russia (and North Korea for that matter). Trump will seize on this forgetfulness and blind faith.

    1. I absolutely agree with your comments. I’ve said for years I would like to see baker as president. Or kasich Sp? A true Republican. Similar to what we have had more often than not in MA

      1. Indeed. Remember Brooke? We also had Weld, Romney. Heck, we had Cellucci and Swift, too.

I wish the moderate wing of the Republican Party would rebound. Perhaps when McConnell, McCarthy, Cruz, Cornyn, Gohmert, Jordan, and a few others depart.

I’ve voted for Republicans in Massachusetts, and have supported others in other states.

      2. Well hmmmmm I not only remember Ed Brooke, I considered him a friend. We watched the first tall ships arrive from his office and had the pleasure of being guests at his home on Martha’s Vineyard. I had some amazing discussions with Senator Brooke.

There really isn’t one back to saltinstall who was not a friend and who relied on my mom and others of course to get them elected. I still have a license tag from Governor Sergeant …I never could spell his name. Every governor has a set of license plates in his name that begin with the first letter of their last name. The ones he gave my dad and me were reversed. Kissinger and Romney lived in Belmont. I knew Kissinger. Not Romney.

I can say very proudly that every person…state, local or federal….was elected. It is why I get so discouraged when fools use the term RINO. These are true republicans.

        1. That’s incredible, Vicki.

Ed Brooke was a friend of yours.

It’s also amazing you know Kissinger.

          1. My mom was heavily involved in politics. Senator Brooke would spend hours talking and listening. One of my moms partners in crime politically was an admin for Nixon. She lived down the street from us. My mom didn’t drive so I would take her to Kissinger’s house. He helped with a lot of town politics. He was not a warm and fuzzy person and I was a “kid” who he wasn’t sure what to think of. But his views fascinated me.

            1. thanks for letting me share my memories. I’ve felt my mom close recently and this has me full of happy tears

              1. Fascinating stuff, Vicki.

Nixon was an insightful, intelligent president, who had quite a number of really interesting folks around him. Unfortunately, Nixon was a crook, too. He was weirdly paranoid and fearful of losing.

Kissinger is an enigma. There’s a new book out on him. I’ve read several reviews.

Closest I’ve come to political fame was sitting on Tip O’Neill’s lap when I was 7. My father brought us to Washington, and we visited our state representatives’ offices. Tip was an affable, accessible man. My father and he kidded about something. Probably baseball. On that trip my father also pointed out Hubert Humphrey on the monorail that shuttles people between the various chambers.

              2. Now that is exciting also. Especially for a seven year old. Tip was also a very interesting person. I did not learn more about him until older. I love that your dad introduced you to our political figures

Funny thing about Nixon who I not only campaigned for but was able to support with facts…..once we learned what he had done, everyone I knew believed he should be removed. No one defended him how different folks are now

      1. I remember some discussions you and I have had about him and you were not sure. So your comment has me smiling. Not so sure he would not win though

        1. His handling of this situation really improved my thoughts on him. When he said we need to do better when we get out of this. We shouldn’t be back to the old normal. That got my attention. He even mentioned the environment which many democrats have not mentioned at all. I never entirely hated him, I like him over most republicans, would vote him over some democrats. Republicans will say he is to liberal, Democrats will say he is to republican. He is one of those people that probably reached his furthest in politics unless he goes for the house or senate.

  8. I feel like states like MA, VT NY and Washington will be prepared for the fall when the second wave hits but the rest of the country, I am not sure. I feel that the south and plains are gonna continue their stupidity and cause an even worst second wave. We also could have a vaccine but it will not be readily available to everyone. The rest of the world have signed free vaccine agreement that it will be free for everyone. Guess the one country in the world that did not sign it the great USA. can you hear the sarcasm 😉

  9. in terms of political figure heads that I have meet, I have meet Warren and Markey. Both in parade and Warren in talks about environmental science stuff, she is awesome and was in my top three for president unfortunately none of my top three made it. Then again anyone but the person that’s in there now.
