DAYS 1-5 (MAY 10-14)
Low pressure tracks north of the region today, dragging a warm front through the region today with a few episodes of rain showers possible in any location, although it will rain a relatively small percentage of the day. The low’s trailing cold front will cross the region this evening with a broken band of showers and possible thunderstorms. That will be offshore overnight and set up a nice Saturday as high pressure moves in behind this system. This high will hold off an advancing low pressure area Sunday, maybe not keeping all of its cloudiness away but likely keeping all its rain south of the region. A stronger surge of low pressure will bring chilly and unsettled weather to the region early next week. But this is not a return to the pattern we’ve been in as systems are becoming more separated and we’re starting to see a tendency to stay on the drier side overall. It just won’t seem that way by Monday into Tuesday of next week…

Slow progression of upper level systems should keep the region fair and on the warmer side to start the period with a wetter/cooler end to the period.

High pressure hangs on today with dry weather, though not as sunny as yesterday. Low pressure tracks north of the region Friday and its warm front / cold front combo brings unsettled weather, but this moves right along and sets up a fairly nice weekend with great weather Saturday and fair weather holding on Sunday as high pressure forces the first of 2 low pressure areas south of the region. The second low will take advantage of departing high pressure to bring wet/cool weather Monday.

I remain cautiously optimistic for a drier overall pattern and near to above normal temperatures.

High pressure moves in today and hangs on well into Thursday with fair weather. Low pressure tracks north of the region Thursday night through Friday bringing a warm front / cold front combo and more unsettled weather. But that won’t be hanging around as another set-up similar to today/Thursday occurs over the weekend, leaving us with the question of how many dry hours we can hang onto for Mother’s Day as the next low pressure area approaches. This low will be further south than Friday’s and will threaten a more widespread rain, but may also be delayed in its arrival, saving most of the day from rain.

Not making any significant forecast changes on this update. Quick warm day today but clouds move in and eventually a shower and potential thunderstorm threat as a cold front approaches, then passes through the region tonight. This sets up another nice but cooler day tomorrow. Broad low pressure approaches Thursday, which starts dry and ends wet, and makes Friday another wet day, but it is gone by the start of the weekend when another area of cool high pressure will move in.

The forecast remains low confidence, but one change I am starting to see is that low pressure may evolve away from the region and high pressure closer to this area bringing a greater chance of prolonged fair weather. Still have to figure this out.

DAYS 1-5 (MAY 6-10)
High pressure provides nice weather today and again Wednesday. The only slight interruption to the fair weather will be a cold front that drops through the region from northwest to southeast late Tuesday, which will be the warmest day of the next 5, but may also see a few late day and evening rain showers and a remote risk of thunder. But this also marks a longer period of time than we have seen in a while without being impacted by a low pressure system coming along the jet stream. However, the next system will arrive from the west later in the week. So we are not completely out of the active pattern yet but there will be a bit of a slowing down of the activity during this week.

Low pressure passes south of the region today, a wet day but wettest along and south of I-90, with lighter and more intermittent rain to the north. High pressure moves in for a nice Monday, then sinks to the south and allows a cold front from Canada to approach Tuesday, which may trigger some showers as it passes through during the afternoon and evening, although it will end up being the warmest day of this 5-day period. Another Canadian high moves in for midweek with more excellent weather. The next system will approach later Thursday, increasing the rain chances again, but we’re starting to see longer periods of time between jet stream disturbances as we enter pattern transition.

Still uncertainty here… The pattern evolution has several possibilities including a cut-off low somewhere nearby. Feeling however that this may occur further south or even well offshore and we end up in a continued progressive but slightly less active jet stream flow. Systems in this flow my bring showers early and again late in the period.

DAYS 1-5 (MAY 4-8)
A frontal boundary lingering nearby and a passing disturbance keeps rain showers scattered in the region this morning before a little push of high pressure from the north sends drier air into the region this afternoon, not really clearing the sky too much but ending the rain shower threat. Now there remains some bad news / good news regarding this pattern. The bad news is the parade of weather systems continues for now and that sends the next wet weather system toward the region for Sunday, although the most significant rainfall from this wave of low pressure will fall to the south of I-90 (The Mass Pike), while to the north the period of rainfall may be of somewhat shorter duration. And then a bit of a change. High pressure from Canada slides down into the region Monday, which is going to be a very nice spring day. The sinking of high pressure to the south and the approach of a cold front from the northwest may sound like “uh oh here comes more rain” upon first read but it’s actually going to help create a fabulous day for most of the hours of it, the clouds and threat of rain showers probably holding off until at least the very end of the day, if not at night, then progressing northwest to southeast across the area. Another Canadian high pressure area is expected to bring cooler but again fair weather for the end of this period.

We’re seeing a shift to less frequent systems while still having an active pattern. Wet weather threat comes late May 9 and May 10 from a broad low pressure area. A minor system may threaten at the end of the period.

Feeling the medium range models don’t have a great handle on the pattern evolution. For now I’m on the lookout for a cut off low somewhere but uncertain as to whether it happens at all, and if so, how it impacts our weather. Will re-evaluate this again tomorrow. Initial feeling is that we start this period dry, end it dry, and see some wet weather in between.

I often profess my contentment with any kind of weather, but I know many of you are tired of hearing about unsettled weather, so I’ll keep this forecast short, although, for you, it’s not all bad news. We’ll spend this entire period on the cool side of a frontal boundary, with waves of low pressure bringing unsettled weather for much of it. Although it won’t rain nearly the entire time, it will often be cloudy. The best chance to sneak in some sunshine is Saturday, and it may improve more significantly by Monday as high pressure pushes in from Canada.

Today will be the nicest day of the next 5, with high pressure in control, but in the pattern we are in, it won’t last, with clouds already arriving later in the day, and wet weather tonight into Tuesday morning, as a small area of low pressure crosses the region west to east. A small bubble of high pressure brings some clearing Tuesday night into early Wednesday as May begins, but we’re back in the dank tank again later Wednesday through Friday as a frontal boundary sits to the south and waves of low pressure ripple along it, keep us cool and damp.

Weak low pressure moves rapidly across the region today, with its track suppressed slightly to the south which will limit rainfall in areas north of the Mass Pike, although to the south it won’t be too significant a rain event either. A similar system comes along with the rain timed for the first 12 hours of Tuesday. High pressure tries to build in for a break on May 1 but the boundary nearby again by the end of the period means additional risk of cool and unsettled weather.

In the pre-dawn hours of today, numerous rain showers and embedded thunderstorms will be tapering off from southwest to northeast, and then
low pressure departs today, leaving behind blustery conditions with lots of clouds and a slight risk of a passing instability rain shower. Another low pressure area races out of the Great Lakes and across southern New England by late Sunday with some generally light rainfall, but the air may be cold enough toward the end of the event to cause the precipitation to mix with snow northwest of Boston before ending. High pressure moves in for the one and only fair weather day of this 5-day period on Monday, which can only mean unsettled weather returns as a frontal boundary sets up shop in the region Tuesday and Wednesday to end April and begin May.

The boundary between Canadian chill and southeastern US warmth will be nearby early period with cool/damp weather, then low pressure may get just east of the region and pull down some unseasonably chilly air for the May 4-6 period.

Some temperature recovery is likely but additional unsettled weather is also expected as the overall pattern doesn’t change that much.

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 26-30)
The final 5 days of April, a month that has been frequently unsettled but mild, will continue the unsettled pattern but start to tilt the temperature scale to a lower level as we see cooler weather overall. The unsettled weather will be here today in the form of warm frontal rain morning and midday and cold frontal showers and possible thunderstorms later today and especially tonight. As low pressure intensifies while moving into eastern Canada, the back side will bring blustery weather for Saturday with a gusty wind, cool air, and although most wet weather will be gone pre-dawn, there still may be a passing shower triggered by cold air aloft. Often times after a day like that, high pressure would settle in for nice weather the next day, but not this time. Another, albeit smaller, low pressure area will come racing along for more unsettled weather Sunday, and it may end up cold enough Sunday night before the precipitation exits that it may end up mixed with some frozen stuff in areas north and west of Boston, especially higher elevations. This will then lead to the only really nice day in the 5-day forecast period, Monday, which will feature plenty of sun which will feel nice even though the air will be on the cool side. A warm front will be moving in by Tuesday with more clouds and potential wet weather.
