DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 26-30)…
Bright but a November feel today as a fresh supply of cold air flows out of Canada while high pressure centered over east central Canada slides eastward. This high heads into the Maritime Provinces on Thursday as low pressure coming out of the Great Lakes approaches New England from the west. There has been some talk about snow/sleet being part of this system as it arrives, and this is still a valid possibility, but the most likely areas to see brief frozen precipitation will be higher elevations of southwestern NH and Worcester County MA, westward. Any flakes in the air as far east of I-495 would be brief at best. This will be largely a rain event, most of it will be Thursday night, and some of it may be heavy as low pressure redevelops over southern New England before heading into the Gulf of Maine Friday. This will initiate a drying trend on Friday although it will likely be windy and on the cool side. Look for a front to sit nearby over the weekend and bring the risk of some unsettled weather, which may stay largely to the north of the region depending on the position of the front. Will fine-tune that part of the forecast in the next couple days.

Chilly northerly air flow makes it feel a little more like November than late October today and Wednesday. An approaching low pressure area from the west runs into lingering cold air and depending on the timing, the rain that it will bring Thursday may begin as a period of snow/sleet in some locations, mainly northwest and west of Boston. Regardless it turns out as a rain event for the remainder of its passage which will linger into Friday before some improvement for the start of the weekend.

Broad low pressure traverses the region today and brings more showers in the wake of last night’s regional deluge and thunderstorms. Tonight and Sunday turns drier, very windy, and cool, and this is reinforced early next week behind a disturbance that may bring some additional showers Sunday night to parts of the region.

Warm front approaches later today and brings increasing clouds followed by a rain risk tonight. Mild and more humid air pushes in overnight into Friday along with additional rain showers, then a chance of more significant rain in parts of the region from a combination of an approaching cold front and tropical moisture from the south later Friday and Friday night. Intensifying low pressure moving into eastern Canada over the weekend will cause a transition to windy and cooler weather. A few showers may still be around on Saturday as the upper level low pressure area has to pass by. Will watch a possible disturbance for Monday with at least some cloudiness and possibly a risk of a little rain but this system may never materialize fully.

KING TIDES…
I’m a little behind with this having not been feeling well, but I wanted to address the ongoing King Tides, which are actually ending after today for this cycle, though will repeat again during the November 14-17 period during the next full moon. The King Tides are the highest tides of the year resulting from an alignment of the Earth, Moon, and Sun. The King Tides this year are also coming at a time when the moon as at its closest to Earth in 48 years, making them even more impressive. These tides run around 2 feet above the normal high tide, and will result in coastal flooding even in tranquil weather. The November King Tides will be slightly higher than these October ones. Hopefully they will not coincide with storminess, especially moderate or strong onshore wind.

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 19-23)…
The warm front that was expected to be slow getting through eastern MA and southeastern NH on Tuesday was even slower than expected, not clearing the entire region until early at night. Many of these areas experienced their highest temperatures of the day well after sunset. And now a weak cold front will slide southward with some clouds early today, though even behind this front it will still be quite warm. It will take until Thursday to be somewhat cooler as the wind turns more to the northeast, but by that time the front will already be making a come-back as a warm front and bring cloudiness and a chance of rain showers by later Thursday. Another cold front will approach from the west on Friday, and ahead of it some tropical moisture from a system to the south may get drawn northward, bringing the chance of some significant rain to the region. I’m not 100% sold on this idea yet, but will monitor it. The front itself should produce some decent rain showers Friday night. By the weekend, we’ll be in a drier, much cooler air mass, with moderate to at times strong and gusty northwest wind, and it will feel quite seasonably chilly.

Warm front lifts through the region this morning and introduces weather that will remind you of summer with warmth and some humidity. Weak cold front drops through in the early hours of Wednesday with a few showers, and it dries the air out a little but doesn’t cool it much of Wednesday, which will still have a bit of a summer feel. More legitimate cool air sinks in Thursday from the Canadian Maritimes, but the front will try to make a come back as a warm front later Thursday into Friday but the parent low pressure will start to combine with offshore low pressure and send a more significant area of rain into the region during Friday. All of this should move offshore Friday night and set up a drier, windy, cooler Saturday.
