DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 16-20)…
Offshore storm gets close enough to cause more wind as it pushes against high pressure over the Northeast. The storm will also toss some clouds onto Cape Cod and Nantucket for part of the day today. High pressure will be more overhead Sunday continuing to provide fair weather. As we have been doing for several days now, we continue to watch for a cold front dropping down from the north and a small attendant wave of low pressure which still looks like it will impact the region more during the Monday night and early Tuesday time frame, but drive a new cool air mass in during Tuesday as the low strengthens offshore while moving away. For Monday itself, it looks like plenty of dry weather for both the Red Sox at Fenway in the late morning and early afternoon and for runners and spectators of the Boston Marathon. The tricky part of the forecast continues to be temperatures, which should be on the mild to warm side but still may drop fairly quickly at some point in the afternoon closer to Boston, as even without the front having passed the area would still be capable of a sea breeze developing. Looking ahead to Wednesday, low pressure moving away and high pressure moving in means cool and breezy but fair.

Fair and mild April 21. A front in the vicinity and a few waves of low pressure may bring at least cloudiness and probably periods of unsettled weather as early as April 22 but more likely April 23-24. Fair and mild April 25.

The trend for the final several days of the month is a return to mainly dry weather and temperatures not too far from seasonal averages, but this often means cooler at the coast than over the interior during many of the daytimes.

No changes at this time. High pressure dominates into Monday. Low pressure stays well offshore this weekend but may toss a few clouds in Saturday. Cold front timing still looks end of day or night time on Monday. Trough to the east of the region gets close enough to drive lots of cool air in behind the front by Tuesday.

High pressure remains centered to the north of the region through Friday, providing fair but cool weather. The winds will increase from the northeast Friday into Saturday as an offshore storm squeezes the pressure gradient for a while as it tracks westward then southward. The only other potential impact from this would be some clouds for a time on Saturday. High pressure sinks to the south later in the weekend allowing for a warm-up by Sunday though some coastal areas will still be on the cooler side. Watching a front from the north for Monday for timing of a wind shift and a significant temperature drop. At this time, still several days out, leaning toward this occurring late in the day or at night, but will watch it due to the fact there is a daytime Red Sox game and of course the Boston Marathon.

Cold front slogs through the region west to east today, producing a ribbon of rainfall for part of the day, though clearing approaching from the west after the front passes may allow the sun to shine before it sets, especially the further west you are. High pressure builds in but centers itself north of the region Wednesday through Saturday. An offshore storm system may get close enough by Saturday for some cloudiness in the region though expecting it to remain dry at this time.
TODAY: Cloudy through mid afternoon including a period of rain west to east. Slow clearing west to east beginning late afternoon. Highs in the 50s. Wind SW 10-20 MPH with gusts 25-35 MPH common and isolated gusts above 35 MPH mainly this morning, diminishing gradually and shifting to W during the afternoon.

High pressure slips to the south by April 17 and any low pressure that was offshore is far enough away to allow a more westerly flow with fair and warmer weather. Front may slip down from the north turning the wind north to east again April 18, which is Patriots Day and the Boston Marthon. Exepecting dry weather at this time for that day. Continued mainly dry with fairly seasonable temperatures April 19-21.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 22-26)…
Starting out fair then turning unsettled with rain chances increasing by the middle of the period. Fair weather should return later in the period. Temperatures near to below normal.

Warm front today causes areas of light rain/sleet to start the day then the rain should become very patchy and remain generally well northwest of Boston by afternoon, allowing for OK conditions for the Red Sox home opener this afternoon. A cold front moves in Tuesday with more widespread rainfall. Continuing with the idea of a slow progression of this front offshore so lingering cloudiness Wednesday, then high pressure building in later in the week but its center remaining north of the region allowing a cooler north to northeast wind to dominate.

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 9-13)…
High pressure builds north of the region today and tonight while elongated low pressure sneaks out just south of New England, close enough for cloudiness but too far south for any precipitation other than brief rain/snow Cape Cod and Islands tonight. High pressure extends southward Sunday with more sun, but a gusty wind and cold air around will make it feel less like April and more like February or early March. As has been the case for quite some time, weather systems continue to move right along, and this means clouds and some light precipitation (rain/mix/snow) will be here as early as the late-night hours of Sunday night, into Monday morning, as a warm front approaches from the next low pressure system. With a little luck, this front will make it through the region for a bit milder air coinciding with the Red Sox home opener at Fenway Park on Monday afternoon. At this point it looks like any lingering precipitation would be in the form of rain and remain northwest of Boston. This won’t be the case for too long, however, as a cold front will slide into the region with increasing rain chances by Monday night and into Tuesday. This system should push offshore as high pressure builds in from the north during Wednesday. There is some question this far in advance at how quickly clearing will arrive, but will just leave some cloudiness in the forecast for now and adjust later, if needed.

And upper level low crossing the region today will make the atmosphere unstable and create some cloudiness and spot rain showers. High pressure builds to the north of the region for the weekend but has enough push to keep a developing storm just far enough to the south and in a configuration that only a brief period of rain/snow is possible Saturday night over the South Coast region of New England. This high will deliver plenty of chilly air, however. A warm front will approach on Monday and may trigger some very light snow/mix/rain. The warm air will get in but an approaching cold front Tuesday will likely trigger more widespread rain showers.

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 7-11)…
Milder today but unsettled ahead of a cold front though the heaviest and most widespread rain will be contained in a band that comes through later in the day and early this evening from southwest to northeast, and may even contain some thunder. Gusty winds will also be dominant. This area moves away to the northeast tonight but some unstable air still means a risk of rain showers at times on Friday. A
secondary front brings much cooler to colder air for the weekend. The wild card continues to be what happens with a developing ocean storm and whether or not its close enough to bring a period of snow Saturday night. Today, I’m going to split the difference and say part of the region, mainly southern MA and RI, stands some chance of getting into a ribbon of precipitation (snow that may start as a mix). What will not miss is wind and cold for Sunday. Looking ahead to Monday, the Red Sox home opener, it looks like the chill will begin to leave us, but this is often done with lots of cloudiness at least, and this time we can’t rule out some light mix/rain though this far out, odds favor that being further north and west and less so near Boston – but at 5 days away this is just an optimistic outlook.

Unsettled weather early in the period, then a drying trend again. Though it still looks like a blocking pattern, leaning at this time toward being more on the dry side of it. Temperatures closer to normal but typically cooler along the coast than inland during daytimes.

You’ll feel the chill to start the day, but this time it will be without any wind. Still, a bit of January in April. There will be a recovery back to the 40s today as clouds increase ahead of a warm front and more of the recently-fallen snow melts away. The warm front passes tonight, possibly with spotty light precipitation ahead of it, and then Thursday we’ll be into the warm air with everybody well into the 50s and a chance of rain showers, but an approaching cold front will bring a ribbon of heavier rain into the region by Thursday evening. Behind this front on Friday the air won’t be that cold initially, but a disturbance in the area means some cloudiness and a risk of a passing rain shower. A secondary front brings much cooler to colder air for the weekend. The wild card will be what happens with a developing ocean storm and whether or not its close enough to bring a period of snow Saturday night. For now, I continue to lean toward this system staying just too far offshore for much impact, but will continue to monitor it.

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 5-9)…
A fun little statistic to start your day out. Boston had almost 4 inches of snow on Monday, making it (so far) the 9th snowiest April there. It snows in April in Boston enough to measure an average of 1 out of every 4 years. Of equal note is the unseasonable cold. Boston set a record low maximum temperature for April 4 with a pre-dawn high temperature of 30. It remained in the 20s during the day, something we almost never see in April. This was the coldest daytime in Boston since the Valentine’s Day cold invasion in which the high was just 12. So now moving on, we’re still going to be cold into early Wednesday as a big Canadian high pressure area approaches today and moves overhead tonight before sinking off to the southeast Wednesday. A warm front will approach later Wednesday, and clouds will increase in response to this, though a snow/ice mix should stay mostly to the north of the region. The warm air gets in Thursday but along with wet weather, which may become quite dominant as a wave of low pressure forms on the approaching cold front. For now will call for this all sweeping offshore Friday and Saturday but remaining close enough to watch for some instability and unsettled weather as it turns colder.

Today’s snow event should behave as advertised on yesterday’s blog, and other than minor tweaks beyond, there is very little change to the overall forecast that was posted yesterday, so here’s the update…

Strong indications of a more typical April pattern of blocking setting up, but it remains unclear at this point if we end up more on the fair weather side or the foul weather side. Will continue to monitor.

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 3-7)…
Very active pattern, as is well known now, with “mini Winter” in early April. We have our brief snow blitz system today, the clipper Monday, and the next system quick on its heals now coming in a little earlier on Wednesday versus my earlier thinking of Thursday, and with that, it will be running into some lingering cold air and bring a touch of snow and/or mix with it (not an important system in terms of snow). By Thursday, it’s mild enough so that whatever is around will be in liquid and not frozen.
TODAY: Pre-dawn – rain/mix arrives and changes to snow from west to east, including a risk of thunder. Dawn to mid morning – mix to snow Cape Cod, snow elsewhere may fall at least briefly heavy to very heavy with very low visibility, including the chance of thunder. Late morning – snow rapidly ends west to east. Total snow accumulation coating to 1 inch Cape Cod and immediate shore, 1 to 3 inches elsewhere, but pockets of 3 to 6 inches possible, favoring the I-495 belt mainly Boston’s southern and western suburbs. Afternoon – sun and passing clouds with a slight risk of an additional snow shower. Temperatures steady in the 30s. Wind NE to N increasing rapidly to 20-30 MPH with gusts above 40 MPH all areas, scattered gusts above 50 MPH, and isolated gusts above 60 MPH but favoring the Cape Cod region, shifting to NW and slightly diminishing but still strong in the afternoon.
TONIGHT: Partly cloudy evening. Clouding up overnight with snow arriving from west to east by dawn. Lows in the 20s. Wind NW rapidly diminishing evening, then light and variable.
MONDAY: Overcast with snow, some mixing possible South Coast, accumulating 1/2 to 2 inches in most locations with isolated heavier amounts possible before ending late in the day with breaking clouds. Highs in the 30s. Wind E up to 10 MPH shifting to NE late.
MONDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows in the upper 10s to middle 20s. Wind NE to NW increasing to 10-20 MPH.
TUESDAY: Partly sunny. Highs in the 30s. Wind NW 15-25 MPH with higher gusts.
WEDNESDAY: Clouding over with a chance of snow/mix, changing to rain late. Lows in the 20s. Highs in the middle 30s to lower 40s.
THURSDAY: Cloudy with episodes of rain or rain showers. Lows in the middle 30s to lower 40s. Highs in the 50s.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 8-12)…
Storm system impacts the region April 8 to early April 9 but it’s unclear this far in advance whether this will be just rain or if there will be mix/snow involved. Cannot rule the latter out. Temperatures will run below normal both days. Optimistically looking for fair and milder weather April 10-11 before unsettled weather returns April 12.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 13-17)…
Heading toward the middle of the month it is starting to appear that a more typical April pattern of blocking may set up, but it’s a toss-up at this point if we end up more on the fair weather side or the foul weather side. Will monitor this possibility.

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 2-6)…
We’re the shooting gallery for fronts and small storm systems the first several days of April, with the first being the cold front that triggered scattered showers and a few thunderstorms during Friday. Next up is a low pressure wave sliding northeastward along that front just offshore, bringing a period of rain today. Closely behind the departure of this wave is another cold front this evening that may trigger a few more rain showers. Then comes a small but potent low pressure area in coincidence with the arrival of unseasonably cold air, resulting in a short-lived snow event Sunday morning that may have briefly significant travel impact but at a time of day when there is not much travel anyway. And we’re not done because after that departs and we get a period of strong winds, the cold air becoming even more established leads to another snow threat is a clipper low pressure system comes along during Monday. Behind that comes more wind and cold for Tuesday, then an easing of both for Wednesday.
TODAY: Overcast through mid afternoon with rain developing rapidly southwest to northeast this morning then tapering off west to east early through mid afternoon. Mostly cloudy later in the day with passing rain showers and a slight chance of a thunderstorm, but breaks of sun possible before the day is over. Highs in the 50s. Wind S to SW 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Partly to mostly cloudy with isolated rain showers early. Clouding over late. Mix to snow developing rapidly west to east toward dawn. Lows in the lower 30s. Wind W 5-15 MPH becoming variable then NE increasing to 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.
SUNDAY: Overcast morning with snow likely. Areas of heavy snow and embedded thunderstorms probable. General accumulations of a coating to 2 inches, favoring unpaved surfaces, with isolated heavier amounts possible. Clouds and sun with passing snow showers to start afternoon then trending sunnier late day. Highs in the middle to upper 30s late in the day. Wind N to NW 20-30 MPH with gusts 40-50 MPH common, gusts above 50 MPH probable in some locations, and gusts above 60 MPH possible in a few locations.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear early, then clouding over rapidly with snow arriving west to east by dawn. Lows in the 20s. Wind NW shifting to W 15-30 MPH early, diminishing to 5-15 MPH overnight.
MONDAY: Overcast with snow of up to a few inches except mix more likely near the South Coast, ending west to east during the afternoon. Mostly cloudy late day. Highs in the 30s. Wind shifting W to NE during morning and midday then back to NW afternoon, 5-15 MPH with a few higher gusts.
TUESDAY: Windy with sun and clouds. Lows from the middle 10s to lower 20s. Highs in the 30s.
WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows in the 20s. Highs in the 40s.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 7-11)…
Next storm system will bring a chance of rain April 7 and rain/mix April 8. Windy and colder with possible mix/snow showers April 9, depending on evolution and eventual departure of storm system. Generally fair with a milder trend April 10-11.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 12-16)…
Unsettled weather returns April 12-13 with another quick shot of cold air. Fair and milder weather follows.
