COVID cases increasing in my daughter’s daycare and son’s summer camp after a long absence. Just got notified both were exposed on Friday
Sorry to hear that. Covid is clearly on the rise.
Oh dear. Hope both stay healthy. Do they quarantine any more or is that a thing of the past.
Keeping my fingers crossed they don’t have it.
I am somewhat surprised that Covid cases are increasing so much with most gatherings outside in fresh air circulating. I could certainly understand during the winter months with indoor gatherings. I would also think that having no schools in session would help as well.
I don’t quite get it.
So sorry about your son and daughter Ace. I guess fresh air means nothing with Covid. Maybe I totally have the wrong idea about this virus.
It can also be gotten by close contact inside stores etc. too. So it doesn’t surprise me. A lot of retail workers are exposed everyday too, as well as people back in offices.
So true. And kids at camps and daycares are inside some of the time and are also in each other’s faces. Just being kids.
How are you feeling, North.
Same no improvement. Have a call into my PCP. Everyone else still negative though!
Good that Mrs Ivy and young Miss Ivy are negative. But darn. Sounds like a good plan to call your PCP. Sure hope he/she has some answers
Thanks. So far so good with both of them. No word back from PCP.
Hmmmm. Hopefully soon
Heard back from her. She said we are definitely in a surge. The latest variants are eluding the vaccines to a point. She also concurred that the sore throat is pretty severe for most with these variants, which has been my worst symptom that nothing will touch but she gave me some suggestions. She said people have been seeing that last about a week :)……
Hope your son and daughter stay negative for Covid Ace and hope you feel better soon, North.
Thanks Tom and Joshua,
North, take good care.
Ace, hope your children stay healthy.
Philip, you raise a good point. It’s summer. People are outdoors more. The problem is the virus has adapted/evolved over time to become more transmissible outdoors than before, and MUCH more transmissible indoors than it was before. It’s stealth. It `wants’ to survive any way it can. By increasing transmissibility it’s successfully doing so, with different sub-variants in rapid succession. Seasonality is out the door, really.
Gottlieb was on TV again saying things that he shouldn’t. He said the Northeast and Great Lakes Region would be protected from a BA.5 wave because of the big BA.2 wave. Huh? BA.5 is quite distinct. Has he looked at European data which suggests that BA.2 offers little or no protection against contracting the virus.
I just do not understand how a person can be so obviously I correct as many times as gotlieb has been and yet keeps making outlandish comments. Is there some something behind his foolishness? Political? Or something else?
Some of it is political. And, some of it is a conflict of interest (he shouldn’t be interviewed on recommendations for boosters, as he works for Pfizer – that would immediately disqualify him from serving as a national expert in most countries outside the U.S.; here, we just don’t care about obvious conflicts of interest).
That is truly PATHETIC! I wonder if it has anything to do with the cost of medical care and lack of decent insurance. Wink wink.
This country is archaic!
Multiple issues, and one is definitely access to healthcare. It’s sub-par in the U.S. and that’s a gross understatement. Another is that the money we spend on healthcare tends to focus on: a. Acute care; b. Cancer care and orphan diseases – lots of money to be made by companies in these spaces. It’s good we do pretty well in some cancers and some rare diseases. But, we do very poorly in chronic disease management of the more ordinary conditions like diabetes and multiple cardiovascular diseases. Then there’s the underlying health of the population, which is relatively poor. Finally, there are public health crises which we address inadequately. Of course we know about Covid-19, but opioid and other drug abuse can be added to the list, motor vehicular deaths, suicide, infant and maternal mortality.
My youngest reminded me that Covid was spiking this time last year. I’d forgotten. And as was discussed, summer didn’t matter then either.
Wasn’t spiking quite yet. Delta wave was beginning, but didn’t really spike until August/September. The situation right now is worse in the U.S. than it was last year at this time. This is because of the tremendous caseload associated with BA.5, which we didn’t have last year with Delta, at least not to the same degree. Our saving grace from even more deaths this summer is vaccinations and built up immunity. Plus, BA.5 is probably not as severe as Delta was. The vaccines don’t prevent contraction of the virus, often repeatedly – which probably isn’t good for people, by the way. But it does prevent severity.
It was definitely spiking in the south where of course summer is even. Lee summer. Daughter and family cancelled their trip to charleston for that reason. And it was beginning its spike in various counties of MA. Since sons wedding was August 21 we were watching very closely.
Not sure what my typo is. But think I meant summer is summer. It started mid to late July and by October numbers were very low down south.
My point was more that it was prevalent during summer months last year also

This graph is telling. As a nation, we’ve gained comparatively little in terms of life expectancy since 1970. https://twitter.com/MaxCRoser/status/1546572810683924489
