Cool, Mostly Dry

8:44PM

Though the temperatures have come way down from their record levels of last week and it now feels more like the month that it is, continued drier than normal weather will keep fire danger high during the next few days. A gusty wind through Tuesday afternoon will not help. A low pressure area will bring clouds and a chance of a little wet weather at midweek but this doesn’t look important. It may be cold enough as the system departs on Thursday for a few snow showers mixed in with rain showers. A similar system may sneak through southern New England on Saturday, at least serving to reinforce some cool air over the weekend. This pattern may continue into next week as well, and even though some of the longer range models have hinted at snow chances, it is simply too early to be sure if those chances will become reality. Something to watch, as snow can easily happen in New England during the Spring, regardless of what the winter has been like.

Updated forecast for eastern MA, RI, and southern NH…

  1. Thanks TK.
It will feel colder those temps tomorrow with the wind and we have a fire weather watch up and the pollen count is up there as well for all those who suffer from allergies.

    1. I suffer pollen and mold spore allergies, though not nearly as badly as when I was younger. But this year I’m feeling it early, for sure. Last year I got thru the entire season without taking any allergy medication. May not be so lucky this time…

      1. I have never had allergies. Last year was my first. This past week and into this week has been miserable.

        1. Thanks TK. NWS forecast looks about the same except for somewhat warmer temps late in the weekend into early next week.

  2. i think cold miser has been released and is getting back at heat miser saying no still my season get out!

  3. 24.4 at my house in Northbridge. No frost on the ground or cars. The wind blew at a good clip last night. Hopefully the wind helped protect the plants a little better by keeping ice from forming. That and the dry air.

  4. TK and others,
My daughters birthday party is on April 14th. Please let me know your thoughts on how the weather might be as we get closer. Thanks.

  5. Got down to 26 here and wind was howling. Plants stayed covered and I’m just leaving them covered through at least tonight I think. I love cold. Invigorating!

  6. Lilly plants made it I think bc they were under trees, very good news 🙂 I think Boston got down to 28?

  7. Last nights lows r the grand finale on this nothing winter, maybe next yr, this makes 3 nights below freezing in Boston since 3 weeks ago when contest begun.

  8. Like I had said yesterday a 45 degree high today in late March is so much different than 45 degrees in Jan, that sun is very high in sky and feels warm, I got in my truck and it was sitting in sun this am and inside was warm didn’t even need heater.

    1. It does not look as snowy as it does on the IWS but at least its there. We really need the precip.

  9. Red Flag Warnings across all of SNE today so it won’t take much to start a brush fire and I don’t see a soaking rain anytime soon. We could use some rain as parts of SNE have moderate drought conditions while others are abnormally dry.

    1. Do you or does anyone know where you can find reports of wild fires currently in progress in the state?

  10. Hey Coastal… I am not sure but I wish when they issue these fire alerts it would be similar to severe thunderstorm or tornado watch. Instead of saying Red Flag Warning say Red Flag Watch then when a fire is occurring issue a warning for the area affected just like when we have a severe thunderstorm and tornado warning. To me when you say watch conditions are favorable but when you say warning its immenent or occurring.

    1. JJ that is a really good suggestion. Didn’t they say the fire in Douglas started with a legal burn? Maybe I heard wrong. As I said the other day, I saw a lot of people out burning last weekend and just do not understand why the fire dept is allowing it. Framingham does not have large spaces between most of its houses.

  11. The weekends this year I think have been so nice, this weekend looks no different, highs in the mid 50’s with that strong early April sun will be nice, hope everyone’s having a good day 🙂

      1. I’d take mid 50’s and some rain. Need rain and above normal temps. My lawn needs water. It’s starting to green up, i just put some fertilizer and crab grass preemergent on it, and its too cold to turn on my sprinklers yet.

        1. I was going to mention that a few days ago when everyone was going nuts spreading lyme and fertilizer. It does no good to the lawn without water. I think it can actually harm the lawn if the soil is dry and the sun is beating down on it. Correct me if I am wrong on this.

          1. I used the old fashion hose and sprinkler to water it in. Actually, it won’t hurt anything if it stays dry, it just won’t be as effective. As for lime, if the soil pH isn’t acidic, lime isn’t needed. The real issue is the crab grass. It got warm enough to germinate and the pre-emergent needed to go down but it’s still to early to dethatch so 2 applications of early Tupersun and a late application of longer acting Demension should do the trick.

          2. We have had a dew each morning which is like a light watering, it’s when ur in the middle of summer that u need to worry 🙂

  12. As long as Sunday is dry. I’m holding my first team practice. Hope it works out for you as well ds.

  13. Can’t find much precip long range…to the point where over the next 10 to 15 days, most places won’t even see 1 inch total over that period. Add this to the dryness of the year so far and it’s not good at all.

I know it’s chilly again today, but the dryness of the air and the strong sun must be removing additional moisture from the ground rather quickly.

  14. Imagine for a moment it stays very dry all of April and then early in the month of May, a ridge of high pressure forms that is similar to the strength of last week’s.

Factor in 2 extra hours of sun everyday and instead of a max sun angle of 47 degrees, it will have a max angle greater than 60 degrees.

What kind of high temps could be achieved ?

  15. 12z Euro does bring that storm closer on sunday giving us at least a shot of some rain/snow showers.

  16. The 12z OP ECMWF wants to produce a 6″ snowstorm Worcester West. At the same time the GFS want to deliver partly cloudy skies and a warming trend into the upper 50’s and 60’s in the same region. Who you going with?

    1. I hope the GFS is correct, but I’ll 2 parts of the ECMWF to 1 part of the GFS…..is this allowed in meteorology ? 🙂

      1. Or……..heads for GFS….tails for ECMWF. I have to go do something more certain….my taxes. 🙂 🙁

    1. Much higher than expected…most mets didn’t think the temps would make it not much past 40.

  17. Today sort of reminded me of Monday April 5, 1982. I remember that day quite well. It was bright, clear deep blue skies, windy and especially cold. The only real difference is that there was no budding of trees.

Of course, those of us who are old enough, know what happened on Tuesday April 6, 1982. 🙂

      1. If I am remembering the right event, then it snowed a whole lot, and a kid at my high school who had just received his driver’s license, slid into my Mother’s car. I think it was his first experience driving in snow. It was one of those long slow sideways skids. That snow was almost greasy.

    1. That storm was two years prior to when I was born but I have heard stories about how the snow was powdry for an April storm which is usually not the case.

      1. I was living on Beacon Hill during the storm (right on Beacon between Charles Street and the State House). My girlfriend left her car on Beacon street despite the parking ban. She didn’t get towed but the door handle and her mirror were taken off by a plow that got too close.

  18. For those who wondered how the buds and flowers would fare in the frost… Here in coastal Quincy, the Magnolia buds at Marina Bay turned brown overnight. They are close to the Chapman’s Reach townhouses, but apparently not close enough to save them. Too bad, as they were very pretty.

Elsewhere in coastal Quincy, things looked okay. We got down to 27, but reached 50 in the late afternoon. A neighbor appears to have sprayed his bushes with water, and they were icicle masterpieces this morning. I don’t know if this helped – it did make the sidewalk in front of his house into a skating rink. Hopefully the mailman was looking were he was putting his feet…

    1. Amy the garden center told me years ago when I lost a lot of plants that I should have sprayed them with water. I felt badly I didn’t know and have always wondered if it would work

      1. Unless the B’s go deep into the playoffs, this 2011-12 team will always have the White House stigma with them. I believe I heard a stat on WBZ-TV sports that their record is 16-19 since the “visit”. Maybe I heard wrong, but my bet is the actual record is not much better.

        1. The playoffs is a whole new season and you never know what will happen. I remember back the 05-06 season Edmonton an 8 seed made it the Cup Finals riding a hot goal tender. They lost to the Hurricanes in 7 games given the Hurricanes their 1st cup in franchise history.

  19. I would also like to add that the snow on April 6, 1982 was quite slushy at first, then as the day wore on temps plummeted down into the teens (around 16 degrees in Boston IIRC) which made the snow quite fluffy. Also IIRC it stayed cold for awhile thereafter so the snow did not melt as quickly as the April Fools’ storm in 1997.

Final Boston snow total = 13.3″…who knew 15 years later even more would come in April? 🙂

    1. Don’t forget the foot in 1987. But that was in the suburbs. Not sure what Boston got. April 29. Awfully close to may 😉

      1. Boston got 4″ on the nose…sidewalks and grass were buried but every street was just wet, even the side streets. IIRC no chemicals were needed either.

            1. OK Vicki…Thanks for the correction. I will have to keep that number in mind for future stats. 🙂

    1. I believe that the month of April especially early on will be cold enough to support snow at times, but we will be in an extremely dry pattern. I have heard that the pattern will continue into the summer as well. I assume that this is all part of El Nino?

Knowing TK, he probably believes that we will always be vulnerable until May.
      🙂

  20. The B’s looked bad in the 2nd half of this season, but look better lately. Tonight’s win is one of the first come-from-behind wins they’ve had in a while. Peverly is back, and I think they have won 5 out of last 6. They play the Rangers this weekend.

    1. Don’t worry Emily, summer temps will come soon enough. Even the really chilly summer of 2009 we did have a heat wave here and there albeit brief. 🙂

Even the infamous summer of 1816 (The year w/o a summer) temps did reach the 90s on rare occasions. 🙂

Btw, Welcome Emily to this blog! 🙂
