Dry, Coolish

12:47AM

The overall pattern through late this week will be dry. A mild day today will be followed by cooler weather again as a couple cold fronts deliver some cooler air from Canada. In earlier posts, I’ve been talking about milder and dry weather through the coming weekend, including Easter Sunday, but I am starting to have some doubts about Sunday at this point. Though it is still several days away, there are signs that an ocean storm will develop and try to back in around that time, bringing at least clouds and cooler temperatures, and possibly some wet weather eventually. Check back for updates on this potential.

Updated forecast for eastern MA, RI, and southern NH…

TODAY: Clouds southeastern MA early otherwise mostly sunny, then clouds returning to southern NH and northern MA later in the day with a slight risk of an isolated shower. High from the upper 50s in the highest elevations to the middle 60s in the coastal plain. Wind SW increasing to 10-15 MPH then shifting to NW during the afternoon.

TONIGHT: Variably cloudy early then mostly clear. Low 35-40. Wind NW 10-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. High 50-55. Wind NW 10-20 MPH and gusty.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 33. High 56.

SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 36. High 58.

SUNDAY: Increasing clouds. Low 40. High 55.

MONDAY: Chance of showers. Low 40. High 53.

TUESDAY: Chance of showers. Low 42. High 54.

  1. Thanks TK !

After yesterday’s 59F at Logan, believe it or not, Logan is running about 2F above normal for the month. We should be below normal, given the current pattern.

Where the surface airflow has been coming from the N or NW, I think this really speaks to how dry its been with regards to high temps. With the nearly 100% sunny days using up very little energy on evaporation, were reaching high temps that I dont think we’d normally reach.

It will be interesting to see today’s high temps. I think the concensus is somewhere btwn 61F and 65F. If the previous days high temp pattern persists, then ending up above this by a couple of degrees wont surprise me.

  2. In this pattern, if it were the middle of winter, I think we would be talking about daytime temps struggling to get to the freezing mark.

00Z Euro and 00Z GFS are in surprisingly good agreement with keeping this pattern into at least the middle of next week. What are the chances that ocean storm comes closer and comes right at us up the coast for the weekend?

  3. Thanks, TK.

I am hoping that Easter turns out sunny and nice. However, if we have to have a cloudy, cool day at any time, I really wish we would get a lot of rain. Seems kind of a waste to have a cloudy, lousy day without the needed rain!

And, again, as I have said before, thank you for this site – you do a great job! 🙂

  4. We can’t have rain at my house, the Easter egg hunt would need to be indoors. I would rather that not happen.

    1. Ok, no problem! I am hoping that any rain (if any) comes on Mon. or Tues. Even if it is cloudy on Easter, I hope it is dry. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Easter, John.

  5. My freinds and i are going to have an easter egg hunt durring the afternoon in the woods Its going to be cool and on top of it i have an advantage of having a younger brother. i get an easter basket full of candy and easter egg hunt with them.:D

    1. Matt that sounds like a lot of fun – we still have an Easter egg hunt for our kids who are grown and of course for our grandkids! Inside the Easter bunny leaves tracks that the younger kids can follow – some thing it’s little drops of flour but kids and I think it’s Easter bunny tracks

  6. Quite a bizarre track of that ocean storm this weekend. It moves east off the southeast coast, heads to Bermuda, and then makes nearly a 180 and tracks back west towards New England due to the blocking high over the North Atlantic. I still don’t think it comes close enough to SNE on Easter Sunday to give us any precipitation. Eastern areas should have the better chance of any increased cloudiness and cooler temperatures (50’s) with more sun and 60+ further west.

  7. The 6Z GFS shows little help for the drought in our area. I think I may turn on the lawn sprinkler before restrictions are issued. I have drip irrigation from my shrubs in the front which I turned on this weekend.

    1. I need to turn mine on too. Just fertilized and added crab grass pre-emerg. My town has never put a water restriction in place, even in 2010. Only one ever is a ban between 9am and 5 pm, but never an odd even or outright ban thank goodness.
I just dont see how we keep a northwesterly flow, a blocking high and we dont get rain at some point. Once this breaks down, and it will, we may get hot and dry for a longer period. NWS calls for a cutoff low early next week, but doesnt seem to have much moisture with it.

As a side note, I understand that a drought has been declared, but its a New England drought. Having been born and lived in Oklahoma for 30 years, I can say without a doubt, that we are not dry, comparably.

  8. If last summers Texas drought were to happen here we would be in big trouble. I think I remember one tropical storm that was headed right for Texas during the summer but it evaporated once it got there.

  9. I am aware that days 6 and 7 are blank thanks to a save issue. Will be fixed shortly.

  10. Hey Tornado Chris…I liked your comments on the WBZ blog early this morning, but it might have been even sweeter if you had posted them under Melissa’s blog instead. It would have been interesting to see the trolls’ responses to them. 😆

I can’t recall the last time that I seriously read a WBZ evening blog. They are always so late so very few respond. The other stations 5 & 7 usually have theirs up by or just after dinnertime.

    1. I looked for his comment but couldn’t find it – I don’t go there enough to know what blog is what. Is it under Tornado Chris??

      1. Sorry I went over there – there is another comment by me – the funny part is that someone was doing that on Keller using my name and I had an idea who it was. This just re-enforces my idea. I know you all understand that isn’t me making the comments on BZ and this is the last I’ll say since idiots do not deserve recognition.

Was idiot too strong a word 👿

        1. Hey Vicki, it was under the drought post. I decided to let them dig their own hole by themselves rather than comment further. I sort of felt bad even doing what I did, but wanted to make the point. Eh, not much else to do.

On a much happier note, seeing the Grateful Dead (aka Furthur) the next two nights at the Wang Center. Will be my 51st and 52nd times seeing the boys. (53 on July 5th in Pawtucket!) If you love great music try and snag a ticket somewhere, the place will be hopping!

          1. Thanks Chris. I did enjoy the grateful dead Have a great time. I thin you like them 🙂

          2. Chris I found it. Very nicely said and I never read what was posted but can guess. Thank you

What the person didn’t read was I was very specific in my comment that I am in awe of natures power but never want the destruction. Either way. What type of person actually thinks anyone has the power to make a storm happen

I remember when the hurricane was supposed to hit in August 2010 and Todd gutter went to Nantucket and was excited about his first hurricane that people said horrible things. As if he had any control over its strength.

            1. Yeah, I don’t understand how being amazed by nature somehow becomes a ‘moral’ issue. The weather will do whatever it will do, and there is utterly nothing we can do about it. Except of course for being prepared for what is about to happen. I heard one police chief in Indiana comment after their recent storms that he wished there were more chasers around, so that warnings and reports would have been more frequent and timely. When we’re chasing quite often we find the local police and fire folks happy to see us, and to get updates from our observations and live radar. They’re just good solid folk trying to protect their neighbors, and we’re happy to help.

  11. 12z GFS looks fine for Easter weekend, though it does establish a trough over the eastern US thereafter and threatens us with a cold looking coastal storm about a week from now.

  12. Logging in to comment here would not deter people from joining. He can easily set it up so that anyone can read his blog but would have to login to read and post. Posting here is kind of unsettling knowing you have people looking over your post with some not so good intentions.

          1. coastal – did you see my comment about bunny footprints above? Do you do an Easter egg hunt for your little ones? The kids all love the footprints and they don’t have to lead to all – just some.

            1. Yes I did and that’s a great idea. This will be the first year we will be doing that at our house before we go over to my Moms. She is too young for candy or hard boiled eggs so we are going with the plastic eggs, but we are having trouble deciding what to put in them.

            2. We always hid little gifts instead of eggs – like play doh and stickers and kids jewelry and little figures. We just wrapped them in the tissue paper.

              1. ok I’ll stop after this – I don’t know if she wears little play jewelry since you have a little one around who could get at it but my kids also do stickers and jewelry in the plastic eggs so there are a few eggs too.

                1. I was just thinking that little items might be a problem because my son is now mobile in his walker and try’s to eat everything. She does like stickers though. Thank you for your help, we are now going in the right direction.

    1. coastal I agree and you just made me smile with your second comment 🙂

I’m not sure TK understood why we were asking for logging in. It’s not cause anyone here is having a problem with another person. We may have a few differences but who doesn’t and I think we handle them VERY well and then move on. TK it’s for the reasons Coastal gave – having people reading over your shoulder – and then taking comments or names to another blog. To repeat, I don’t care if anyone uses my name. Everyone knows how I post and I don’t change and am not rude so the person can have all the fun she wants.

Either way it is your decision and I support it 100%.

    2. Coastal I agree. I do not like people reading what we talk about. I asked if we could take it to vote, shot down. People who sign in to log here want to be hear in my view.

      1. You can still log in too read and don’t have to comment. The problem is the ones who are not here regularly and getting the word to them. You can work around it but it means more work for TK and that’s not fair either. Although I’m always willing to help and Coastal has done an incredible job getting people here all along.

            1. Yea. Tk said he was not going going to make this a log in site. I totally agree with coastal on I kind of feel uncomfortable knowing trolls are reading what we post here. If this were a login site in would keep the trolls away, my oppinion. People who want to be here would not mind giving there email address to log in. I have now lost track on how many of our names have been mentioned on wbz. I think a login would protect the good people that blog here. Again this is my thinking. But again we can just ask. Tk makes the rules.

    1. Yes….but, I don’t think models are doing too well handling this blocky pattern or the jet stream configuration out in the Atlantic east of the US. I think they probably have the big picture correct, but I don’t trust the smaller details within that at all.

  13. I wonder what’s up in Taunton….as discussions since midday have been coming from Upton, NY.

  14. I could care less about those trolls, they got no backbone and usually would call them telephone tough guys but in this case there a bunch of texting tough guys, and I don’t mingle well with them, enjoy the blog like it is, how would a log in work?

    1. I am inclined to agree. Mostly because it just makes more work for TK. And I don’t go to BZ weather so could care less what’s posted there. And if it’s who I think they will just move to other stupid games. Your comparison of phone and computer is exactly right

    2. I agree. Just ignore them. The more they are a topic of discussion on this blog, the more attention they get, and the more comments they will make. They are just trying to get a rise out of people here and are succeeding. They clearly have nothing better to do with their time . Ignore them and they will get bored and go away.

  15. Unfortunately we’re long overdue for a prolonged period of cut-off lows, gray skies, rain, drizzle, mid to upper 40s, yuck. I believe that’s what we’re going to get a lot of the coming weeks, starting late this weekend. But, on the bright side, I’m mostly wrong so it’ll likely turn out dry and sunny.

    1. Joshua i have been thinking we are long overdue. I hope for rain more than drizzle and it’ll be good for lawns etc

    2. You could be right about the cold temps. and rain/drizzle. And if it isn’t in the next few wks., bet it could be in June. Sometime in the late ’80’s, not sure when exactly, it was rainy and cool almost all month.

      1. I think we just had a bad June – was it two years ago? Three? 1982 was horrendous. We went to the beach for the month and ended up inside the whole time in winter clothes. With my 2 year old and my brothers 1 year old.

        1. I think you’re right – it was 1982. And you are right about a recent June. It was June 2009. We had just moved to Sudbury. There wasn’t much rain most of that summer – just gray and cool until August.

          1. June’s been not so great for several years. I can’t remember the last decent June really.

            1. IIRC June 2010 was a pretty darn good one. Temps ran about 2.5 above normal. Precip was near normal. There were 4 days where the high was 90 or above, another 9 in the 80-85 range and 14 in the 70-75 range. In all the spring/summer of 2010 was great IMHO.

  16. Maybe your right, maybe wrong. But when has a long range outlook been correct in months? Wil it start now. I doubt it 🙂

  17. I had originally predicted (gut feeling) that the coming summer would be hot and dry. Well, now, I’m just not sure. It’s just been so dry that I hate to believe that the draught will continue into the summer. It was such a crazy winter and the spring so far has been weird – I can’t even begin to make a guess on what the summer will bring. I just hope we don’t get such severe weather that they had in TX. Thank goodness no one was killed – but the damage is pretty bad. I am hoping for thunderstorms – especially with beneficial rains – just nothing to hurt anyone or property.

  18. What is your opinion? I have a typical fan sprinkler going in my yard. My question is how long should I let it soak one area before moving it?

    1. Your best bet is first thing in the morning and than at night. Enough coverage, but trying to avoid puddling. The pistol head sprinkler rotating one is good, but so is the one you have. Keep an eye on the forcast for rain, and if it is enough plan the sprinkler around the rain.

  19. I believe May will be below normal in temps and above normal in rain, this is just from watching a few different long range weather analyst, also I believe we get a decent dose of rain somewhere between April 11th-15th, have a great day 🙂

  20. Does anyone have a best guess for sat around midnight and then sunday early afternoon. Son planning to ride his bike from brookline to fram and back at both of those times. Want to make sure it’s not bitterly cold or raining.

    1. I reserve the right for the models to change 4 times btwn now and then……

30s to near 40F overnight, low to mid 50s by day with a mix of clouds and sun. Very minimal chance of a shower.

      1. 😀 Thanks so much Tom and i sure do understand the lack of confidence in the models. So he needs to worry about freezing on way here but should be fine going to work in afternoon :).

  21. Fires in Brimfield and a smaller one in Wayland. Very worrisome and I still do not understand how people are burning brush. I drove by two houses that were burning yesterday.
