  1. Thanks TK!

Not liking next weeks forecast so far. Using a week of paternity leave and it does not look great!! The NAO looks to go negative which does not bode well.

  2. The NWS forecast for my area looks like something that came from Late April, showing mid-upper 60s after Thursday for daytime highs…
It does seem reasonable with the 00z EURO’s mega ton block over us.

  3. To be honest it looks awful for next week, cool, raw and showery. This is what drives me nuts about NE weather.

  4. Thanks TK. Hadi, hopefully things will change but it doesn’t look like anything is going to stop the NAO from tanking. I think the past 5-6 weeks have been easier to take with the long cloudy and showery periods because the sun has been out on the weekends. Looks like that streak is about to end.

    1. I saw that – they said there hasn’t been one since (was it) pre-revolution? They think he swam across.

      1. It’s been a long time since they have seen them. My wife works in South Plymouth and her students have seen the bear and took pictures.

  5. Another set up for a typical June that we seem to have been stuck in for the last several years. Cool, showery, raw here and there, a few sunny warmer to hot days, negative NAO with a block that wont budge till almost July. That NAO loks to go as negative as its been in over a year. On a positive note, if there is one, it looks to go back neutral around mid month. Back to a nasty block again!!!
And yes Hadi, this is what drives me crazy about this place and the reason I hate it, hate it, hate it with every fiber of my being.

    1. As I see it, I think we’re in for about 15-18 days of unsettled, showery, cooler weather before we get into the late June-August 15th summer run, hopfully.

Anybody have an explaination for the really, really negative NAO? Some ensambles show a -3 before it rebounds. And all the ensambles seem to align pretty well.

  6. What does the forecast look like for the two week period starting June 9th to June 25th?

  7. The 12z EURO is just as hideous as the 00z run…
Make the best out of tomorrow, as it will be a very nice day.

    1. GFS is awful too. We’re in for some pretty dismal stuff for a few weeks. That block is a 10 ton gorrilla.

      1. At least the 12z GFS showed signs of the block breaking down by the second week of June, while the EURO kept it strong. We’ll see what ends up happening.

  8. Any chance the models will change their tune and we end up with nice weather the next few weeks? I’m reminded of all the times during the winter when the NAO was forecast to tank and the pattern was supposed to shift and it never did. I’m hoping that is the case this time!

    1. The NAO is already in the fish tank, and I think it took a deep breath before going in. The first week of June is pretty much a loss it seems as of now. The rest of June is up in the air.

    2. I was thinking the same. Even last weekend was a good example. How was your game last night Ace?

      1. It was good Vicki…the weather anyways. Three putted 2 holes from 4 feet…just plain awful

        1. oh no – maybe you need some time at the driving range. hehehe – that’s what I always tell my husband anyway 🙂 Glad the weather cooperated and suspect you had a good time and will have all the problems worked out by next week!

    1. I angerly wondered the same. I asked the question in the Lyndon State Meteorology Facebook group, and one the professors said that the AO dipped this much in January, and that the NAO and AO are nearly the same index. I hope to learn more about those indices in college.

  9. I looks to come back up mid month. Actually this has been the pattern the last few June’s really. It’ll come back up by the 3rd week of June then we get into a summer pattern. Everybody who was upset by the dry weather and thought it was going to stay dry, remember its new England. Our wet season is late spring. Well, here we are. These blocks usually last 2-3 weeks this time of year . I was hoping the little one we got in may was going to be the only one and we would skip the June block, but it’s not to be. On a more positive note, once the June block breaks, July and August usually doesn’t see one.

    1. There have been a couple decent June’s in the past several years. 2010 was a little over 2 degrees above normal temperature wise and precip was normal. Most of the precip fell in the first 10 days of the month

  10. I am beginning to wonder now if the NAO will be taking an annual “tank” in June and staying positive the other 11 months in the year…scary thought. By my count, this would be the second June in a row of lousy, cool temps. >:-(

Also IIRC as bad as the summer of 2009 was, the month of June was the coolest and temps didn’t turn around until the week after July 4th.

Last June I had to turn my heat back on…hopefully no repeat of that nonsense.

Hey Scott…what your professor said about the NAO/AO tanking in January does make sense to me. Saturday January 14th was the only “snowy” day of the winter. I nearly slipped big time when I arrived at work and actually had to shovel when I returned home that evening. Boston received a whopping 2-4″ and the Cape ended up with 6-12″ lol. 😉 Not to mention that the month of January was the only month all winter that we had any “decent” cold (relatively speaking of course). 😉

    1. I remember that “major” snowstorm real well, got a whole 4″ from that. Nearly half of the entire snowfall of that “winter” 🙁

Right now I’m just trying to see how the NAO affects the summer pattern versus the winter pattern.

I wonder why the building of heights in Greenland led to the -NAO/blocking, which did occur this time around.

  11. I’m just afraid this is going to last the whole month. The euro sure hints at it. Pete B basically said in his blog (if you read between the lines) this could turnout to be a long term pattern wich I would interpret as the entire month. Either way, it’s going to be a miserable 2 weeks at best. Even the highs next week only look to be low 60’s. Awful, just awful. I may take a trip south for a week around the 20th. I have some time. Pretty bad when you have to take a vacation from here in June just to get warm weather. I don’t care what anybody says, why the heck would anybody actually move here if there wee other options I’ll never know.

    1. Brad I know you have trouble with lack of sun but just a hint………..I love this area and wouldn’t trade it for anything. And there is nothing wrong with me.

      1. But ur a native. Some kid at 25 with a wife and a baby says “I can live in Georgia or north Carolina or move to this place”. What you think he’s gonna do? There’s a reason mass has lost several congressman I’ve the last 20 years. Population shift to warmer climes.

        1. That same kid with a wife and baby needs to care for his wife and baby and put food on the table, send his baby to the best schools in the country and have the best medical care for his family and has a job in biotech, choice is simple, no better place than here. I guess if u had a job that u could do anywhere, and u didnt like it here, it wouldnt make much sense to stay

          1. I love NE but understand where your coming from Brad, in general when people move here they hate the weather, that’s why not many move from warm to cold, since the 1960’s NE has lost 2.4 million New Englanders to the sunbelt regions of the country. It starts with company’s not wanting to stay bc they want to build big and then the people fight it so then they just go south bringing New Englanders with them with alot of college and then unfortunately are replaced here with less educated, it hurts the Boston area alot, in the last 10 yrs it has changed and population is actually increasing here which is a good thing, Liberty Mutual threatened to leave the area with 600 employees if they couldnt build a 300 ft tower in back bay, it cast a shadow on Copley square for 15 min, thankfully it’s being topped off as we speak and it’s a great addition, they will add another 150 jobs over next 5 yrs. 🙂

          2. Yes, but a lot more jobs than just biotech. The other thing I notice is that natives here think this is the hub of the universe. There are other places in the USA that have this place beat all to heck. Not bring critical really, just an observation. And I’d put Hopkins, md Anderson in Houston or Duke up against any hospital in Boston. Boston doesn’t have a corner on everything;)

            1. I in pharma so that’s why I’m here. If I were in anything else, d be in better climes. It’s also really expensive here too. Housing is atrocious even with the down turn. Grocerys are high, energy, housing, food and entertainment. You name it, it’s expensive. I’m not complaining really, I make a hell of a dollar. My kids go to private school, I have a good life. I just loathe the weather and the politics 🙂

        2. I’m a native but my husband has lived from MD to CA to GA and SC along with others but grew up in Sweden Rome South Africa Paris and others I’m forgetting and he loves it here.

I don’t agree with warmer climates as much as I do the cost of living in nasty econimic times

  12. Yes Charlie I know. I can’t figure you out. You were in a wonderful place and moved back. But then again your a native from here. I figure anywhere you need heat in June is the seventh circle of hades along the river Styx.

  13. I just refilled my lexapro and booked tanning appointments every day next week. Maybe I’ll make it :(. This was my worst fear come true. I’m truly in a deep hole.

    1. Be careful of the tanning…you don’t want to end up looking like that crazy lady who brought her daughter to the tanning salon and will likely have many home visits from child/social services for many months to come, lol. 🙂

As for Pete’s blog, you may be reading a bit too much into it. He did seem to leave the door open that the second half of June could very well be nice and hot the way you obviously like it. It is still too early to totally write off the entire month. Let’s see what happens. 🙂

I am also curious as to what a -NAO means for the summer months. I have a feeling it does not include much in the way of HHH temps with blazing sun.

      1. All we need is for a high to slide off the Mid-Atlantic coast, then we roast. I just don’t see anything close to that on the EURO. We had that every week this past winter…

        1. That what I was afraid of this winter. That a winter pattern would show up in the summer.

          1. I just don’t see it breaking down in the next 10 days at least. The GFS has a hint of it 10 days out, but we need a few more runs. The NAO looks to go back weak negative to neutral mid month. Al the members seem to line up. Of course they may diverge tomorrow, but until that NAO comes back to at least -1 to neutral, any cutoff low that rides up here will sit and spin on top of us. I haven’t seen it this negative in over a year.

      2. -NAO for summer gives us what we’ll see next week. As I said earlier, this seems to be a reoccurring June pattern. I was hoping the one we saw in late April early may would keep the June one from happening. No such luck. My observations over the last few years tell me this is a 2 to 3 week pattern before it breaks down. Most of next week looks horrid but a couple sunny days might break out here and there but in general I don’t think we see consistent good weather for another 14 to 20 days. If there is a positive thing, it usually doesn’t show up in July and August once the one in June breaks down. If you go back and look, last June we had about 9 days of cloudy, rainy and down right cold around the second week of June. So the pattern isn’t that unusual, it’s just tiresome.

  14. the weather looks not so great next week saturday looks wet and cool. sunday through wednesday looks unsettled and cool which is the total oppisite of what i wanted. 🙁 but i got two thousand 5 hundred dollars in scholar ships 🙂 prom is tomorrow and class day is on the forth. Graduation is on the 5 . what do you think about the forth and fifth of june.

  15. Brad, your in pharma? Is there any other place in the country that employees you particular field or is it only found in the great state of Massachusetts?

    1. Jersey and bay area California. I’m more scared of earth quakes and the weather in San Fran stinks more than Massachusetts. Jerseys ok. I’ve thought about it and even looked around down there. But, it’s really not much better than here and it’s not any cheaper to live either.

      1. I guess I would choose NJ over Cali due to the earthquake factor and being close to the family on the east coast. Going to LA in August and will confirm that notion. I have a face for the movies (Mask) so it may work out. I think you may need a hobby that’s not weather dependent to get your mind off of the gloomy weather. Never known someone to hate our weather here as much as you do. Maybe you could build those little ships in the glass jars or something?

        1. I have seasonal affective disorder and clinical depression. Rainy days here and there don’t get me, it’s the weeks on end of gloomy, blocking stuff that gets me. Same with cold and snow in the winter. I was ok for the first 10 to 15 years I was here, but the last 5-8 years or so I’ve had big problems with it. Winter before this last one I thought I was going to die. My yard had 4 feet of snow and I wa so panicked and closed in I had to take a leave of absence for awhile because I couldn’t function. Yes, I hate the weather here but I can medicate enough to get by when we get this kind of weather.

          1. I booked a plane ticket to north carolina and the beach for a week on June 21st. Hopefully when I get back on the 29th it’ll be better. I’d leave Monday if I could but I have to be at work for some up coming meetings.

            1. Speaking of hobbies, I just received my new FM antennas for my radio hobby (dxng). One is an 11 element 14 footer and the other is a 14 element 18 footer. Assembly will be a bear (not a simple type of antenna). Should have them built and up in the next two weeks. Hoping for some decent radio conditions.

                1. No receiving only. I will probably go for my ham ticket down the road in the next year or two. In the past 20 years or so that I’ve been in this hobby I’ve logged over 1900 FM stations from the U.S., Canada, Bahamas; over 900 AM stations from North and South America, Central America, Europe and the Middle East and over 200 Television stations from North America from my location here in eastern MA.

              1. Wow. Congrats on all those great contacts! My husband got his ham license in 1979 and I got mine in 1981. I used to do a lot of hf dxing (on paper – not in the field) years ago but through the years we haven’t done much. My very 1st contact was in CO. We were very active in 2 meters w/a local ham radio club in Metrowest. Maybe someday we will get back into it.

                1. Thanks. Most of my dx friends are hams so I know I’ll cave someday soon :). Last night conditions were good for FM up into New Brunswick (CBC on 91.3 was in even on my portable radio) and downcoast to New Jersey.

        1. I’ve been to NJ before, but I was staying with an Hispanic family. I would never live there or go by myself….ha

  16. I’ve been so busy getting my students ready for their finals, that I havent had much time to look in depth at the models.

I have had a chance to read the comments above and see that next week has a lot of gloom potential with the -NAO.

Interestingly, the environmental Canada temp outlook for June 8 – 15 has all of New England as above normal and southeast Mass as much above normal. So, I was just wondering what the long range projections are. Because this outlook seems inconsistent with what I’m reading above.

    1. Tom, Sorry to get off topic but do you know of a place in the Marshfield Area (Rte 139) that has a function room capable for handling 100 people? Looking for a venue to host friends and family after a funeral service in Mid June.

          1. Sorry did not mean to answer for tom. stuck on the roofs all day watching over contractors, I was bored.

        1. Just told a friend who is spending a weekend in Pembroke about Fairview. The Barker is wonderful. I have a groupon for dinner we’ll use in August! How about Chester’s on Mill Wharf, Scituate.

            1. Will tell my kids – they were at humarock last week. Feeling good – well maybe not entirely – some odd pain from procedure yesterday. I just scheduled a lithotripsy for kidney stone that doesn’t understand a no vacancy sign in July and then another colonoscopy in September and prob a surgery after that…………on the scale of things – minor details 🙂

              How are you???

              1. Living the dream vicki. Work is busy, twelve hour days. Been on the roofs all day enjoying the weather.

              2. Hope you are feeling better, Vicki. Sorry about all the procedures you have coming up. Took husband for his colonoscopy this morning – it was at 7:00 so we left the house at 5:45. At least it was light out. Husband is ok – had some biopsies. He has been sleeping most of the time since he came home. Last colonoscopies he had he seemed more awake. Oh, well. Weather-wise – this day is an A+ for a day in May.

              3. rainshine – both my husband and I were sleepier after this time. Odd. I just shut my eyes for an hour and went right to sleep – I never nap but still feel the meds I guess. I hope biopsies are fine. Eeeekkk – that is early in the morning.

  17. Enjoying today and tomorrow before some unsettled weather moves in.
Looks rainy Friday night into Saturday with maybe even a rumble of thunder. I don’t see any severe weather with this storm system. The severe storms look to stay across the Mid Atlantic.

  18. Let the bike skimboarding, and surfing start 😀 first compition 🙂 I hope it is not cancelled saturday morning then i am going to cousins graduation party 5 to 10pm. any thoughts

    1. I love reading about your plans – I get to live a bit of my youth over again!!!! Have fun!

  19. Tonight will be beautiful down here in Plymouth for my son’s last flag football game. I have a feeling that Saturday’s soccer games will be canceled though. How does Saturday evening look? I have a fundraiser to go to at a restaurant in Pembroke and they are hoping to use their outdoor patio as well as the indoor part of the restaurant.

          1. My husband will only get clam chowder from Oliveiras. He has yet to find a place that even comes close in his mind. I have known the owners for years.

            1. Joyce is nice. She knows us from the tree lighting, we hold meetings there. I am the town santa.

              1. I will have to tell Joyce I was chatting with you. 🙂 She is a good egg. She used to babysit me when I was a kid and then I babysat for her kids. I am definitely looking forward to an Oliveria’s pizza on Saturday night.

              2. I don’t have this restaurant on the list for last January 🙁 But I’m trying it in August!!!

                1. I am sure she will know you if I mention that you are the town Santa. I was really hoping it would be nice on Saturday night because she wants to use the deck. Vicki…if you like chowder then you definitely must give it a try. They are closed on Monday nights and open at 4 every other day.

      1. Mynneighbor brought us some striper last Sunday. He’d just caught it. There is nothing like caught, cleaned and cooked in same day!
