Sunday February 16 2025 Forecast (9:01AM)

DAYS 1-5 (FEBRUARY 16-20)

The snow portion of our winter storm is about over – with the final flakes in northeastern portions of our region being replaced by sleet and freezing rain. Elsewhere, we have rain falling, and in many parts of the region, except near the coast, it’s falling as freezing rain. A gradual warming during the day will shrink this freezing rain area, but it may never warm enough to end it in some interior sections from Worcester County MA into southern NH. These areas will see up to 1/2 inch of ice accretion which can lead to tree damage and power outages. Cold air damming has most of the region in an inversion, keeping increasing winds later on above the ground, but coastal areas will lose this inversion sooner with east winds shifting more southerly, somewhat gusty in these areas, eventually to go to west by evening as the axis of low pressure shifts to the north. While our rainfall pattern becomes more spotty and takes on the characteristic of waves of showers, some heavy, these can bring stronger wind gusts down to the surface over the Cape and Islands. Elseswhere, besides the aforementioned icing issues, the snow that fell will be absorbing rainfall and will become more difficult to move. And unmoved, water-logged snow is set to become solid ice tonight and for several days as we get a blast of cold air behind the departing storm. I still think a little wrap-around frozen precipitation can occur at the tail end this evening, but this will not have a notable impact where it occurs (mainly southern NH). The big story will be the powerful wind gusts tonight through Monday, in the 45 to 60 MPH range. This leads to additional tree damage and power outages in some areas. The wind will ease only slightly Tuesday – a gusty day but less powerful, and both Monday and Tuesday will feature below normal temperatures with highs in the 20s, so this will preserve our newly formed ice block. 😉 … Wednesday will be another cold day, but more tranquil as high pressure replaces the northwest air flow of the previous two days. Then, attention turns to Thursday’s storm threat. The key for this event is the track of a low pressure area developing down the coast. This system takes on more of a “classic” look as it forms and moves seaward, and at this point I am still leaning more toward a side-swipe rather than a direct hit. Further elaboration on this system will begin with tomorrow’s update.

TODAY: Overcast. Precipitation continues – transition from freezing rain to non-freezing rain works from South Coast into the I-90 belt but takes longest in valleys, sleet to freezing rain in areas to the north with a lower chance of getting to non-freezing rain, resulting in additional sleet accumulation and ice accretion. Rain may taper to just drizzle / few showers southeastern MA and RI for a time during the afternoon hours. Highs 30-37 southern NH & interior MA, 38-45 eastern coastal MA & RI, 45-52 Cape Cod / Martha’s Vineyard / Nantucket. Wind E to SE 5-15 MPH coastal areas, a few higher gusts, variable under 10 MPH inland areas, briefly becoming S 10-20 MPH Cape Cod region where stronger gusts are possible, and variable 5-15 MPH elsewhere before shifting to W from west to east end of the day.

TONIGHT: Cloudy evening with one more burst of widespread rain showers except potential icing interior elevated valley locations early evening and potential sleet/snow showers late evening, favoring north central MA and southern NH. Breaking clouds overnight. Lows 15-22. Wind W to NW increasing to 15-25 MPH, higher gusts.

MONDAY (PRESIDENTS DAY): Sun/cloud mix. Slight chance of a passing snow flurry. Highs 25-32. Wind NW 15-30 MPH, gusts 35-55 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 11-18. Wind NW 15-25 MPH, higher gusts.

TUESDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 21-28. Wind NW 10-20 MPH, higher gusts.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 8-15. wind NW 5-15 MPH, diminishing.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 26-33. Wind N up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Increasing high clouds. Lows 10-17. Wind N up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Thickening overcast. Snow possible, favoring eastern and southern areas. Highs 21-28. Wind NE 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (FEBRUARY 21-25)

A little quieter this period with one minor system bringing potential snow showers mid period, otherwise dry weather and below normal temperatures.

DAYS 11-15 (FEBRUARY 26 – MARCH 2)

February 26-27 and March 1-2 are current watch periods for potential winter storm impacts. Temperatures below normal.

  1. Thanks TK. Hope you turn the corner today and start to feel better. Hope your Mom is doing better as well.

Some ice accretion here. Make sure everyone clears storm drains, for those who will be getting rain later to prevent flooding.

  2. Thanks TK
Take it easy for anyone who has to remove this snow and ice.
NY got 0.5 inches of snow bringing the total to 12.5 inches.
What did BOS get and what is the total for the season??

  3. Thanks, TK!

Hope you and Mom are on the mend! 🙂

Lots of staff and students were out the last couple of weeks at school. Vacation was needed to get everyone away from one another.

Just got safely back from an early-morning run to Green Airport.
Slow, but travel wasn’t too bad. A couple of spinouts by other motorists going too fast.
Street flooding was an issue on the way back on Rt. 44 in Seekonk and Reboboth with heavy rain and clogged drains.

  4. Little Quiz.

Does anyone know the significance of the number 204 ??

It’s pretty cool and I only know because it was show on a series
    I am currently watching.

    Answer later.

My guess for the person who gets this is: TK or SCLARKE

    1. 12Z NAM at 84 hours. Has the Thursday system down the coast.
Looks ominous, until one looks at the upper flow

To me, this also looks like an OTS or graze at best set up.
      We shall see.

      1. Washington D.C. you got another potential for a sizeable storm. Last week they had a six inch snowstorm.

  5. I am hoping that winter storm threat happens on February 27th so I don’t have to go to jury duty.

  6. Thanks TK.

Heavy snow here at Sunday river. Had 4” as of 7 am and have picked up at least a few more since.

  7. Thanks Tk . Looking out the window it looks like maybe 4 inches or so. I’m not looking forward to removing this cement !! It’s currently 33 here going by my weather bug app.

  8. Maybe a conservative 4.5 here. There is a thick layer of ice about an inch down that I cannot get the ruler through

    1. Cold air damming. This was the big talk this week here, but many folks were too fixated on snow amounts in media to really highlight it until it was kind of an “oh by the way”. Every news anchor was driving the snow snow snow and the mets had to kind of change the subject to the ice being the bigger deal where it occurred. I’m disappointed that it went that way. Mets job is made harder and harder by media in general.

  9. Just came in from cleaning up. That stuff was really HEAVY!!!
Had to take frequent rest breaks to keep it safe for me.

Felt like it was sleeting, but it was just plain ole rain!!!!

    1. Can you get a younger person in the neighborhood to shovel for you?

Glad I don’t have to do it anymore. This facility does an excellent job! 🙂

        1. I know what you mean. Just be careful and take plenty of breaks. You’re not getting any younger you know. 🙂

And that goes for you as well, TK! 🙂

    2. I agree, felt like sleet but was definitely rain. I started shoveling the driveway which had some flooding because the town can’t keep a burm together for us without a snowplow crushing it months later… and before I got to the end of my driveway I had to stop, hop over the dam the snow was making and walk to the gutter that nobody on my street ever shovels out because the water doesn’t wind up in *their* driveways. After doing that the seas started to part in the street. (Seriously, the street was that flooded.) I had to wait ten minutes to begin shoveling again. If I hadn’t been thinking, I could have shoveled out to the street accidentally and been the beneficiary of all that water. lol

    1. Something is going to have to get out of the way for that to hit us more directly. Besides that is not the storm for which I put in the 72″ order, so you need to focus our energies on subsequent developments. The snow gods got back to me and said they will take the order under consideration!

  10. The next batch has moved into my area and unfortunately the temperature still below freezing so a little more ice accretion on those trees and branches. Over 15,000 without power in CT as of now. Thankfully I still have power.

  11. There suppose to get just above freezing when the heavier rain shows up later this afternoon which would be great.

  12. Nice lull in the precip now for eastern MA (except far southeast at first). The areas from southwest and west / north into Boston will be prime for remaining cleanup now. My son, his best friend, and my next door neighbor are teaming up to do mine. I hate being too sick to go out there and contribute. But at least it’s getting done now!

    1. I shouldn’t have done mine seeing how much I’m now coughing but somebody had to do it. lol

      Feel better tk!

    2. Glad you have help with cleanup. I say use those folks to take care of it for the rest of the season.

Speaking of rest: GET SOME!!! 🙂 ❄️

  13. QUIZ answer

Well, no one seem interested in the quiz, but I’ll post the answer just the same.

So what is unique about the number 204?

Well if you square 204 it equals the sum of the cubes of 23, 24 and 25

    204 squared = 41,616

    23 cubed = 12,167
    24 cubed = 13,824
    25 cubed = 15,625
    ——
    41,616

I just found it pretty fascinating.

    1. I didn’t see it. Church was a zoom today so I couldn’t switch to here. Very interesting, JPD. Thank you

  14. The snow is so heavy . I’ve been sick the past two weeks so I need to tackle this in pieces , it’s raining pretty good now . I have a nice little snow thrower machine but this is way to heavy & needs to be shoveled . Use caution out there as this is 100% heart attack snow !!!

    1. It looks awfully heavy. My son in law keeps taking shoveling breaks. He says our snow blower works, Not sure why he isn’t using it.

  15. Revised snow total here: 6.5.

33 degrees, rain stopped for now (though it was freezing rain previously).

  16. Awesome! Hopefully out to sea on Thursday. But we all know the windshield wiping with all the models. Trends now looking great for OTS.
    Have a great day everyone.

  17. Wx Watcher warned us about these “mixed” events for SNE and that only NNE would truly benefit for the entire winter.

NNE still did well the last two years, in spite of a “snow drought”. I believe they could still snow under the influence of a Bermuda High. 😉

  18. I just got in from clearing the driveway. Luckily, it’s excellent blowing conditions here during the lull!

After JPD gave that property of 204 (which I would never have thought of), I looked it up and there are two properties that I like even more here:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/204_(number)

    (1)
    Both 204 and its square are sums of a pair of twin primes: 204 = 101 + 103 and 204^2 = 41616 = 20807 + 20809. The only smaller numbers with the same property are 12 and 84.

    (2)
    204 is a sum of all the perfect squares from 1 to 64 (i.e. 1^2 + 2^2 + 3^2 + 4^2 + 5^2 + 6^2 + 7^2 + 8^2 = 204).

      1. Btw, check out the Apple TV series PRIME TARGET.
It gets started a little slow, but WOW!!

        Truly interesting.

  19. Thanks TK! Hope you are feeling better – just drive down to NYC to see Saint John’s – Creighton at 3 – a big one for Big East Regular season title. Quite an interesting drive. Thank goodness it was 33 when I left the South coast – the amount of ice on trees along 195 and I 95 in Rhode Island and northern Connecticut was very noticeable. Some cells with heavy rain in New York. I am still hopeful for Thursday especially along the coast

  20. Enjoy the game at Madison Square Garden. The garden will be rocking. It’s been a long time since St. John’s has been this good.

  21. Dumb weather question…I didn’t pay close enough attention. Is the center of this storm to the west of us, thus causing the changeover?

  22. What an effing mess. Ended up between 2 and 3” of snow here in Sharon. Changed over around 3am. The rain has been relentless. Seriously concerned about flooding down here. The water has nowhere to go as the ground is frozen and storm drains are covered. These are the only times when I get water in the basement and it has begun. Unfortunately, there’s a lot more rain to come.

    1. We have flooding here too but thankfully no water in the basement and I think that’s because the water is able to be absorbed a bit by the ground as we’ve stayed above freezing and no icing issues. Is there any way to clear the drains? I had to do that here.

  23. I am looking at the slug of moisture to the west and I am saying to myself temperature get above freezing so we don’t add anymore ice accretion. Now up just over 17,000 power outages in CT. With those wind gusts projected later any area that has the ice accretion that could lead to some more power outages.

  24. I was explaining to a friend why snow shoveling causes so many heart episodes for people. This is what I said:

Picture it this way. You don’t really exercise much… or in some cases not at all. But you’re used to shoveling every now and again during a month or two in the winter. You’re now doing cardio and weight lifting out of nowhere for an hour. The people that wind up having an issue (either a heart episode, throwing out their back, straining a muscle) thought it out – they’d not try to get everything done in one go. If in the middle of the summer I walked up to any of these people and said “I want you to lift these 50lb weights for an hour with no breaks or hydration” they’d look at me crazy. But for some reason people don’t view snow removal in that same lens when they absolutely should.

It’s important to keep up your cardio and physical fitness when you can throughout the year and realize that outdoor chores, even mowing the lawn, is a physical activity and should be treated in segments with hydration.

  25. Finally done , absolutely the heaviest snow I’ve moved in years by shoveling. It is pouring here now at 35 degrees, the water is just flowing down the street like a river . I would think the salters will be out all night tonight as it’s going to be an ice skating rink later .

  26. TK! I hope you feel better soon! I’m assuming you have influenza since your symptoms are occurring longer than I’d expect with norovirus. Rest up and continue to hydrate!

Does anyone happen to know when we can expect temps to drop below freezing overnight? I want to shovel this stuff before it freezes but I’d rather allow the rain and above freezing temps go to work at least a little bit before then.

    1. Thanks Arod and everyone!

I’m not sure what this has been, but it is finally losing its grip on me…

I woke up this morning feeling the same as I felt yesterday. But in the last three or so hours, steady and up notable improvement is taking place.

    2. Same boat here. My neighbor has a skid steer he was using for a fall yard project and decided to take it out this morning and plow everyone out since our blowers couldn’t handle it. It still left a bit of a mess though that I need to clean up

  27. If you read my discussion today you saw that I was expecting Cape Cod to get into the “warm sector”. They’re in it now. Temps 41-48. While just to the north, temps remain in the 30s in Plymouth County. Some of the heaviest rain will be occurring in the next 2 hours, thankfully with temps mostly above freezing. But there are still pockets of below freezing air in north central MA into NH, northward and westward, and these places are in trouble for icing, as it will not warm enough there.

My hope is that the shoveled / plowed pavements are able to dry off somewhat from the increased wind tonight, behind the rainfall, because anything that does not dry is going to freeze in short order.

  28. 11 laps into the Daytona 500 and they are in a rain delay. Saw that coming. It’ll take 60 to 90 min for that to pass through, then another 30 min of track-drying. Going to be a long afternoon / evening at the track!

  29. Temp 78F, dp: 72F here in Clearwater, FL Noticeable difference btwn outside air and AC.

Line of tstorms to our northwest bring mild, sunny, much less humid.

Good luck with the heavy rain the next few hrs, hopefully localized flooding not too bad and good luck with the wind tomorrow.

  30. Exactly 1.00″ of precip at 34 degrees here.

William Byron, the defending champ, in the “24 Car” is leading.

My college roommate runs the “Jack and Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation” in memory of his wife who died in 2006 from breast cancer.

Several years ago, William Byron donated one of his race cars to Jon’s foundation which Jon auctioned off for JAJF.

Because of that, I will always be a fan of Willie B in the “24 Car.”

    https://www.jajf.org/

  31. Light mixed precipitation here now at Sunday river. 10” new snow on the day, 6” of which have fallen since we got here. Powder day! Not looking forward to the drive back later.

      1. Have to get that low pressure axis a bit further north, then it’s all west to northwest. That’s when the temp goes down and not long after that we’ll start seeing the damage and power outages mount up.

Monday is going to be a fairly memorable day for a lot of people in terms of wind damage, power outages, and flying ice sheets.

        1. Do you think that the damages and outages will mostly be in the areas that had the freezing rain?

    1. I never pay attention to the NAM outside 48 hours This doesn’t change a thing in my thinking. If global guidance made for this time frame shows something different soon, then I’ll take note.

The NAM will notoriously try to decide the low isn’t where it is, but further west in the trough line, and much more intense. Typical model error.

  32. The last of the rain will be coming through during the next two hours. There really isn’t much more upstream. A little wrap-around moisture might cause some ice pellet or snow showers northwest of Boston this evening,

After that, the wind can actually benefit to help dry out some of the ground before the temperature plunges. But there is not a lot of time for that.

This is also going to be one of those instances where putting down ice melt will only be partially helpful because the wind is going to blow it away and a lot of places…

      1. Probably need it at some point. You’re about at your high temp now (may get into the lower 40s briefly before 8 p.m.). After that, it’s down, down, and down. About 20 by sunrise. About 25 for a high tomorrow.

          1. I’m going out after dinner and shovel away some standing water and then lay down some ice melt.

I picked up a 50 pound bag yesterday.

    1. I can’t put down any ice melt sadly. Resigned to waiting for it to freeze. Totally flooded pathways and driveway. Hoping the ground and drains soak up more before the deep freeze here in hingham. Only then can I even consider any ice melt.

  33. There are your mid 40s to lower 50s with south winds over Cape Cod – aka “warm sector”. Meanwhile, just across the canal and Plymouth County remains below 40. Yep, this is pretty much how it was spelled out. What a complex and fun forecast though – even doing it while sick. 😉

  34. I like Hamlin 11. It’s been years since I’ve watched and it shows. I don’t recognize a lot of names.

  35. Still not above freezing here. My driveway and sidewalk are a disaster. Not letting my wife out for a month. Five weeks ago today she slipped in the driveway and snapped her upper arm in half. Long recovery.

    1. Oh no Retrac. That sounds horrible. I hope she’s through the worst of it.

About 10 years ago my wife fell on ice in the driveway and broke her knee cap. She was in one of those leg braces with the dial on it for 3 months. She still is dealing with issues now from it.

    2. I’m really hoping the temps warm up in a week or two and just get rid of all this. It’s a bit of a disaster here too. I want spring already.

  36. That rain delay at Daytona will still be another hour I think. It’ll be a nighttime race.

      1. There are still some scattered rain showers to come through. A little later some sleet & snow showers may cross southern NH.

  37. Occluded front just about to get to Boston. Triple point is near the RI and will pass by the CCC region. Ahead of that down there is where the warmer wedge was with 40s & 50s. 30s elsewhere.

Once that front goes by, it’ll take a few hours, but the wind is going to start to pick up in earnest after shifting to the west. By about 10 PM, you’ll be hearing it from inside.

  38. That was a slow climb here today . Sitting at 38 & a quick jump to 40 at 8 & back to upper 30’s before hitting the 20’s later

  39. Really hoping for a miss on thursday. This was a lot of flooding for the yard and the sheet of ice that will follow tomorrow won’t be fun. Don’t want to add a ton of snow on top of it. Did go out for a drive by nantasket. The ocean was tumultuous: https://ibb.co/Y7Srj9Tw

    1. I wish I had been well enough and had time to do that today. Next time!

The Thursday event will most likely be a side-swipe. But it might be a little more significant for SE MA, based on current trends.

        1. Too soon to know that detailed. All of southeastern MA is vulnerable right now. Average storm track error this far in advance is up to a few hundred miles.

  40. The next issue will be the wind. Areas that have had significant icing the wind could create more power outages. My lights flickered about a half hour ago.

    1. Yes.

      High Wind Warning
      for Southern Worcester County

      Issued by National Weather Service
      Boston, MA
      2:53 PM EST Sun, Feb 16, 2025

…HIGH WIND WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 7 PM THIS EVENING TO 7 PM EST MONDAY…

      * WHAT…West winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 65 mph expected.

      * WHERE…Central and Western Massachusetts east of the Berkshires.

      * WHEN…From 7 PM this evening to 7 PM EST Monday.

      * IMPACTS…Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

      PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Watch for falling debris and tree limbs. Use caution if you must drive.

      &&

      1. It is a Wind Advisory for all of CT. We are up to just over 27,000 without power in CT. Those winds are only going to increase those power outages with the areas that have had significant icing today.

        1. Oh dear. I’m trying to keep all my devices charged. And I made zip bag frozen water for the freezer.

          1. One of our meteorologists in CT Gil Simmons always say when there is a risk of losing power keep your devices charged. I been doing that today.

  41. Logan has now recorded measurable snow on 10 out of 16 days this month, and the seasonal total is up to 30.8 inches. Heading for 40+, easily.

    1. Impressive and the staying power of snow. Pretty much covered since Xmas. We lost it for a few days end of Dec but otherwise we’ve had pretty much nonstop on the ground.

  42. What are the expected road conditions from Sharon to Waltham for early tomorrow morning? We have a ton of water still on the roads.

    1. If they are not treated, they will be ice covered, unless the water cover is thin enough to dry in the wind before it freezes, but that’s a very narrow time window.

      1. Thanks TK! I think they were treated but right after being plowed. That salt has long been washed away.

    1. It was heavy rain. Thankfully the temperature was just above freezing when that squall line came through. Now waiting on the wind.

  43. The temps are now in the upper 20s in northern Worcester County and the Merrimack Valley, as well as adjacent interior southern NH. This is bad news for ice accretion with the final batch of rain – the thing I’ve been most worried about with this event, especially right before a wind storm.

    1. The temperature never got above freezing here and it’s 25 now.

I just survived a nerve-racking trek of about 20 ft from the house to the barn and back. Yikes!

        1. We’ve had goats and chickens in the past. There aren’t any animals now, at least not any that we really want to be there. The barn still holds my woodworking shop and my son’s blacksmithing shop.

          1. So fun. And very cool. I wish I had a barn for horses did my daughter and granddaughter

My uncle was a blacksmith on Isle la Motte VT. I spent a lot of my time playing in his shop when I stayed with his sister, my nana, in summer. She left the shop to the historical society. It is supposed to have the most complete set of tools in the northeast.

I have this drawing of his shop on my wall

            https://ibb.co/cc4V2h12

              1. And I just learned that Isle la Motte, VT is not too far from Potsdam, NY, where I went to Clarkson College (now University).

              1. It’s what I remember as if it were yesterday. Especially the box of horse nail rings. I still have one someplace.

Thank you, SClarke. Huge smiles here

  44. One of our meteorologists here in CT said the wind coming in and the ice accretion on the trees is not a good situation. He thinks our power outages in CT could double or even triple. Last check the power outages are down 26,148. An hour ago that number was just over 27,000.

  45. For anyone interested, CNN is having a special on pan am 103 over Lockerbie. I’ve said on here that Mac’s sister was working 103 from the US to London. But was bumped for the return trip.

  46. Looks like the salt won’t go down as I go to do it & it’s raining again , lot of rain here today .

  47. Stopped on the way back from Sunday River for dinner at Sylvan St Grill in Salisbury. Parking lot is a complete sheet of black ice and nearly fell getting out of the car. Passed three cars spun out in the median of 95 in Hampton NH but in general, roads were better once we got south of Portland. Was sleeting pretty heavily between Sunday river and there.

  48. Limbs are heavy with ice here. Bad feeling about this.

Was a burst of freezing rain, then sleet then snow on top

    1. Ugh. I don’t think my area of sutton has ice on trees etc. doesn’t mean other area of sutton done though.

Hope all goes well in your area

  49. Several accidents now reported on Route 495 & Route 2. The sleet / snow punch right at the end as everything was icing over did a number on the roads, and apparently the crews were caught off guard, as I have heard there are miles of untreated road in the Leominster / Fitchburg area, and also in the Littleton area (near 2 & 495 where there is a 20 car pile-up). Not sure what the deal is, since the forecasts were on the mark and available well in advance that we’d have a rapid freeze-up with a tail end sleet / snow burst in some areas.

    1. because the general population has become that stupid and expect things to pretty much hit them directly across the face.
