DAYS 1-5 (JUNE 12-16)

A summertime feel today with a warm, dry westerly wind blowing ahead of a cold front moving our way from the north, but it stays dry today – just a few clouds, and more hazy smoke above us from the Canadian wildfires. The front drops through tonight, and one tweak to the forecast I am making is the low chance of a shower or two bring triggered near the South Coast as it moves through that area. Friday, it heads south and we’ll enjoy another day of fair weather, some mid and high level clouds streaming in above us, a little reduction in the wildfire smoke aloft, and slightly cooler than today, but still pleasantly mild. Our weekend looks considerably cooler with a broad onshore flow between low pressure stretched out to our south and high pressure in southeastern Canada. The latter will be strong enough to limit how much rain falls, sending drier air intrusions in. Our greatest shot at more widespread rainfall appears to take place in the early hours of Saturday to a few hours after sunrise, with just spotty sprinkles and drizzle otherwise through Sunday. Enough dry air can get into our region for partial sun at times both Saturday afternoon and for a portion of Sunday. Monday’s weather currently looks similar with not much change to the overall set up of broad scale easterly flow at the surface, westerly flow aloft, high pressure to the north, and low pressure to the south, but not too close. This is kind of a “mostly cloudy” but not much else kind of look at this point, with continued below normal temperatures.

TODAY: Smoke-filtered sun along with a few passing fair weather clouds. Highs 78-85. Wind W 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Brief showers possible near the South Coast. Lows 56-63. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: A sun / cloud mix. Less high altitude smoke. Highs 73-80, coolest at the coast. Wind N under 10 MPH with coastal sea breezes developing.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Partly to mostly cloudy. Showers arriving overnight. Lows 56-63. Wind N to NE up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy with a chance of showers, favoring morning-midday. Some clearing possible later. Highs 64-71, coolest coastal areas. Wind NE to E 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Isolated showers / drizzle possible. Lows 53-60. Wind E up to 10 MPH.

SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny. Isolated to scattered showers possible. Highs 65-72, coolest coastal areas. Wind E up to 10 MPH.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Lows 53-60. Wind E up to 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly cloudy. Highs 62-69. Wind E up to 10 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (JUNE 17-21)

Large scale pattern dominated by the evolution of a modest middle US ridge of high pressure in a west northwest more progressive air flow over our region. A couple of disturbances can bring some unsettled weather in this pattern – currently favoring June 17 and 19, but with low confidence on timing and no details possible. Temperatures trend warmer overall. Summer solstice: 10:54 p.m. June 20.

DAYS 11-15 (JUNE 22-26)

Indications continue for the general large scale pattern featuring a middle US high pressure ridge and more of a west northwesterly air flow in our region with a weak trough being the main feature. This allows a couple disturbances / fronts with shower / thunderstorm threats. In this pattern temperatures are generally variable but average somewhat close to normal overall.

    Low overnight was 64 and now up to 71

  5. I knew it was beginners luck!!!!

    I really bombed out at Wordle today!!!

    After 5 guesses, I was down to 4 identified letters, 3 in position and one not. I still could not get it, although I should have!!!!!
    I cheated and googled words with my identified letters, then and only then did I get. REALLY disappointed.
    I’ll keep trying each day and see IF I get any better at this.
    No matter what, it can’t hurt me.
    Fun trying…..

      It took me four today. I use adieu for my first word and story for my second. My second word didn’t get me any letters today. Nothing in one of the first two words seems to be more common lately for more than just me.

      I also start at midnight and line to time how long it takes.

      I used to play nerdle. It’s a math alternative. I stopped mostly only because no one else played it and it’s fun to have others to play with.

    Terrible tragedy in India as a Boeing 787 (Dreamliner) crashed shortly after takeoff, apparently killing all 242 on board. The plane was en route to London. What’s baffling to me is how the plane couldn’t gain altitude beyond 625 feet, no lift, engines appear to stall in the video I saw, and the plane then crashed.

    My dp has been very accurate, so I don’t get why I am reading 61 while the airport is 55 and even Norwood is 57??????????????????

    1. Despite being 80F, it felt quite comfortable outside in downtown Boston. As I mentioned yesterday, if summer could be like this, say, between 70F and 80F (with dewpoints in the 50s), for 90 days in a row I’d be fine. Alas, that’s not what our climate does. It’s like asking for my preferred weather in winter, sunny and 20s during the day for 90 days, with 10 snowstorms mixed in (and NO mix or rain). Ain’t happening either.

  11. It’s believed now that 1 person survived the Air India crash and is in hospital (amazingly not in critical condition).

    Sky News in Britain has video that shows the plane taking off and trying to ascend. It never gains lift and so only marginal altitude (625 feet).

    By the way, this is one of my greatest fears when I fly. I’m terrified of pretty much everything associated with airplanes (a completely irrational fear, I admit) but takeoffs are what I dread most because I know that if the plane can’t ascend, for whatever reason, that’s it. There is no escape route.

    1. Too bad there wasn’t a field or something beyod the runway as it look liked it was descending fairly slowly. Couldn’t see in the video, but it hit something, I don’t know if it was a stand of trees or a building or what.

      1. It’s very densely populated all around that airport. It hit a building housing medical students. There are many fatalities on the ground as well.

    2. I have the same fear Joshua. The pilot called in a mayday and reported engine failure from what I am reading. You can still operate a plane with one engine so could have been either a complete power failure on the plane or double bird strike.

      I also saw speculation from analysis of the video that the wing flaps weren’t extended and landing gear remained down which would have been enough to prevent the plane from getting enough lift to take off, especially with a fully loaded and fueled plane for a 10 hour flight.

      Hard to imagine pilot error here, especially with all the redundancy and automation on planes today. Seems to me like a complete power or engine failure at the worst time.

  16. Jet Blue flight rolled off the runway onto the grass upon landing at Logan Airport this morning due to “steering” issues. No injuries, everyone ok.

    What is going on with airlines lately?

    2. Believe it or not, airline incidents remain DOWN this year over last, but reporting every single one of them is way up.

      That said, there are still too many things that are preventable that are happening, and have been for a while.

  17. Ok. Health update. Took a sudden tho not severe turn in the wrong direction today. Fever appeared and while not high, is “there”. Upper lungs are junk. I have not slept more than 2 1/2 to 3 hours in any night since last week.

    Called out of work for tomorrow, only the 5th time in 20 years. Calling the doctor. No more playing games…

    Haven’t looked at much weather to update yet, but I’ll do that in a bit. I feel OK to be up and about. In fact I cough less when I’m sitting up, so being at my laptop is nice, and a distraction.

    I’m just going to do online stuff, listen to music, and watch hockey from here until I attempt to sleep (probably sitting up this time).

    I think I had the same thing. It lasted long time. Sleeping was interrupted at best; often I didn’t get any.

    I am feeling well now. But it took 13 days to fully recover.
