DAYS 1-5 (NOVEMBER 8-12)
A weather pattern that has featured fast-moving systems has slowed a bit with a broad trough to move through the region this weekend into the start of the new week. The cold front that was approaching our region and sent showers into the area last night has slowed to quasi-stationary and is allowing additional showers (even a few downpours with potential thunder for Cape Cod) over much of our region this morning, after which we will see a drier interlude with some partial clearing starting this afternoon. During this time, the frontal boundary will sag to the south and east, but another approaching low pressure area that it connects to will start to push it back northward as a warm front on Sunday, bringing us another episode of wet weather Sunday afternoon and evening. As that low center moves by to our west, a trailing cold front will amble into the region as we get to Monday, but again the front will be nearly parallel to the upper level flow for a while as the trough axis will be yet to move through from the west. This will allow yet another wave of low pressure to form, move up across the area, and prolong the rain chances well into Monday. Finally, this wave moving by and eastward advancement of the trough will signal an end to this unsettled weather episode and the arrival of a chilly, dry air mass Monday night and Tuesday (Veteran’s Day), with a gusty breeze and below normal temperatures. Outdoor Veteran’s Day ceremonies that take place Tuesday will have to contend with the gusty chill, but at least it will be a precipitation-free day. Another disturbance dives southeastward from the Great Lakes bringing lots of clouds back Wednesday. I’m not 100% sure yet if we see any precipitation from that disturbance as it may stay to our north. Depending on timing, if we do, a little light mix of rain/snow could be seen in portions of our region, but I’m leaning dry for now.
TODAY: Cloudy with occasional rain showers this morning including a slight chance of thunderstorms over Cape Cod. Partial clearing with a bit of sun possible this afternoon. Highs 56-63. Wind variable up to 10 MPH becoming W 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows 40-47. Wind W shifting to N diminishing to under 10 MPH.
SUNDAY: Early partial sun, then cloudy. Periods of rain in the afternoon. Highs 48-55. Wind N shifting to E up to 10 MPH.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Areas of fog. Occasional drizzle and a chance of rain. Temperatures steady 48-55. Wind SE up to 10 MPH.
MONDAY: Cloudy. Areas of fog early. Periods of rain. Highs 55-62. Wind S 5-15 MPH, shifting to W late.
MONDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows 33-40. Wind W increasing to 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.
TUESDAY (VETERAN’S DAY): Sun and passing clouds. Highs 40-47. Wind W 10-20 MPH, gusts 25-35 MPH.
TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 27-34. Wind W 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.
WEDNESDAY: Increasing clouds. Highs 47-54. Wind SW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.
DAYS 6-10 (NOVEMBER 13-17)
Upper flow shoots disturbances our way via the Great Lakes with the potential for short-duration precipitation events and near to below normal temperatures.
DAYS 11-15 (NOVEMBER 18-22)
Despite a lot of wishy-washy medium range guidance, leaning toward an upper pattern that sends a couple systems into the Great Lakes, which would be a slightly milder but still variable temperature pattern here with one or two opportunities for unsettled weather.
Thank you, TK
Went up to 54 overnight. Back to 52 now. Total yesterday and today 0.20
Wordle. 3
Fantastic. I just picked the wrong word at 3. I have to learn what word wordle wants.
Good morning and thank you TK.
54 overnight and now
Ocean temp: 53. (Boston bouy)
Wordle: 4. Thought for sure I had it in 3.
4 is great. I should have had in 2 but took the cautious route.
Wow!!! That is really awesome.
:). Thank you
3 π
oh Boy and here I was thinking 4 wasn’t bad at all.
SClarke and/or Sue will come in with 2!!!!!
Awesome Tom
Itβs nice to be further up front on the train with everyone else, once in a while π
In a couple months, when itβs frigid, can the Wordle train take us somewhere warm?
I’m afraid not. It’ll be more like The Polar Express.
π
Ha, probably be the warmest winter on record. π π
Am I a pessimist? You bet, the worst possible kind.
I don’t look at the glass as half full, I look at it as EMPTY!!!
Here’s hoping for a cold/SNOWY Winter, but expecting much less than that.
lol !
Thanks TK
Thanks TK !
Thanks TK.

Lots of great Wordle scores today!
I got it in four.
If I had used a previous long-time first word, I would have had four of the letters with the first and last in the correct position.
Welcome to the 4 car. Nice to have some company.
I’d rather the 3 car though. π
North Ridge at Killington is in the clouds. Temp 43 (not sure where the 43 is, the base or summit???)
https://www.killington.com/the-mountain/conditions-weather/webcam/north-ridge-cam/
I’d hate to see ALL of that Snow they produced the last day or 2 go down the drain today and tomorrow!!!! Let’s hope it cools off enough there.
It is 30 on top of Mt. Washington and some cooler air as close
as Ottawa, Ont. How fast will that filter SE into NNE???
Thank you TK!
Wordle: 1 :-). Only because my mom posted her result and I happen to know her starter words and I picked the right one. Yes, I cheated lol
π π π
I knew you would have it in Less than 3!!! Didn’t expect 1 though.
At least you admitted how you did it. π
I almost posted your momβs score of 1 but thought it should be up to you. I cannot imagine her reaction.
How does the train handle this? Is Sue the locomotive engineer today?
π
Yes, indeed!!!

Here is an interesting tune from REM:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWkMhCLkVOg&list=RDjWkMhCLkVOg&start_radio=1
What’s behind this tune:
The R.E.M. song “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?” is
based on a 1986 assault on journalist Dan Rather by a man who repeatedly demanded to know “Kenneth, what is the frequency?”. The attacker, William Tager, was later arrested for murder in 1994 and revealed his delusion that he was a time traveler sent to find the frequency used by the government to beam messages to people’s brains. The song uses this incident as a starting point to explore the generational gap between older and younger generations, particularly the challenges of media and cultural understanding.
The attack: In 1986, Dan Rather was attacked by a man who, while hitting him, yelled, “Kenneth, what is the frequency?”. Rather initially described it as a mugging, but the strange and repeated phrase stuck with him.
The attacker’s motive: Years later, William Tager was arrested after a 1994 incident at NBC, during which he killed an NBC technician. While in custody, Tager claimed he was a time traveler from the year 2265 and had attacked Rather because he mistook him for someone named Kenneth. He believed he was trying to get the frequency to stop the government from sending him messages.
R.E.M.’s inspiration: The band was inspired by Rather’s story and used the phrase as the title for their 1994 song on the Monster album.
The song’s meaning: According to lead singer Michael Stipe, the lyrics are sung from the perspective of an older person struggling to understand Generation X, and how the mass media they consume is often incomprehensible. The line “you wore our expectations like an armored suit” refers to the perceived disdain Generation X had for older generations at the time.
Dan Rather’s reaction: Rather took the song’s inspiration in stride, even performing the song with R.E.M. in 1995 during a sound check at Madison Square Garden
Watched the movie Millennium again. I hadn’t seen it in some time.
I still really enjoyed it, although I must say, I hadn’t remembered how piss-poor the acting was. Seems, the older I get, the more
critical I have become of the acting in movies and shows.
I can’t believe they released that movie with that shitty acting performances by all of the actors. That aside, it is such an interesting story and I still liked it very much.
This trailer gives an idea of the acting

Yo hi! Been so busy I haven’t been able to check in here as much…
* Happy Birthday to anyone I missed!
* I enjoy the early-day Wordle discussion. It temps me to start playing it, but if I give in, it will not be before New Year’s Day 2026! π
* I have nothing to add about the weather other than the “partial clearing” I mentioned may be a bit more substantial for a few hours with more sun once it arrives (west to east). There are fair-weather clouds streaming our way from the west off the Berkshires and those will dot the sky once the higher cloud deck moves away.
* I was in Bridgewater last night at a football playoff game between Woburn and B-R. They beat us easily (42-14) but we were a #14 seed and they were a #3, so the odds were not in our favor anyway. Good effort by the Woburn team though! They play in the consolation bracket next week (Thursday or Friday), following that the only game that remains is the traditional Thanksgiving game with Winchester. They are a powerhouse offense this year and in about 9 games have scored no fewer than 35 points. Doesn’t bode well for us, but it’s still a great time to attend this traditional event, win or lose! I’ll be there on Thanksgiving morning. π
Check in later!
Please join in on Wordle. It is fun and very frustrating at the same time. Can be most humbling at times.
Are we escaping the sharp chill to our south next week ?
Some may call it a chill, but I don’t see anything remotely resembling anything out of the ordinary. Sure temps may be below average for a few days, BUT that does NOT make it unusual, in fact, it is very common. Some days are below average and some days are above average. Put em all together and we get an average. Perfectly NORMAL for temps to be in the 40s this time of years as it is to be in the 60s. It goes both ways.
I was thinking that too. The temps Iβm seeing here are what we have had on and off for a while now. Iβm seeing much cooler temps in southern states.
The departures from normal will indeed be much greater in the South / Southeast due to the magnitude and southward advance of the cold air mass. We’ll be below normal here too, but not as drastically.
Thank you. That makes more sense
Here is a nice shot of Killington as a screen shot from a webcam.
Certainly shows the clearing TK was talking about.

Lovely. Our sky is a baby blue dotted with lovely billowy clouds. I love this type of day. Well a bit cooler but still lovely
Thanks, TK!
It’s 58 and grey here today. I figure the over / under is 60F.
I posted late yesterday but am so excited for my grand niece and her soccer team. They won NH state champions yesterday.
She goes to Orlando later this yes to try out for the national U16 team.
YAY!! Awesome!!!
That is very exciting!
Thank you both. These youngsters no matter the sport are so dedicated. Our own Sam is a perfect example. They are beyond special
Thatβs fantastic Vicki! Wishing her the best in her try out!
Thank you, Sue !
Thanks TK.
Gorgeous here in Hamden CT with mostly sunny skies and 70 on the car thermometer. Just arrived at Sleeping Giant State Park to do a hike. Last day we are going to see weather like this for awhile.
P.S.
For those who like watching open land time lapse, this is one of my favorite to check in with from time to time. They post many…

Thanks, TK.
We hit 60 briefly and are back down to 59.
61 here.
The relatively mild air is being cut into by a rather stiff & gusty breeze this afternoon.
Thanks, TK.
Wordle in 3
Wow!!! Nice going!!!
Awesome
The Quabbin Reservoir water level is at 340 billion gallons or about 83% of capacity (412 billion gallons) as of the end of October.
The level is at a low point for recent years though not alarmingly so. I was surprised because drought conditions are not that bad. I suspect there was a planned drawdown at some point recently or it wouldn’t be this low.
The 412 billion gallon capacity is about a 5 year supply assuming level demand.
Once again a plethora of untrained “forecasters” (or folks who think they can perform true meteorology by just looking at model output) have declared that winter will be off to a fast start in the next week or two (even though, it’s not actually winter, it’s autumn). Trends tell me they are going to be embarrassed, which will cause them to change the subject and/or delete many posts to destroy the evidence. If it was worth it, I’d keep track of this, but … it’s not really worth it. π
And what I mean by trends…. no I’m not coming on to say hey it looks like a really warm and snowless start to winter. It doesn’t. But it also doesn’t look persistently cold with an anomalously early snowcover, which despite what some people will tell you, has never really been prominent in November in southern New England. When “Jingle Bells” was written for an event in November in Medford MA, there was some snow on the ground, and it was an anomalous weather pattern that produced it. It was not typical to have snow cover in late November near Boston in the 1800s, just as it isn’t now. That doesn’t mean it’s never happened either.
Ok, back to your regularly scheduled comments section. π
Block is your friend, my dear
Go get em!!! Yeah right, Winter is about to start!! What kind of idiot would buy into that? When has Winter EVER started this early around here?
Uh-oh. Are you saying that I shouldn’t have moved all of our retirement savings into snow shovel futures?
π
Haha!!!!
34 at Killington. Will they resume snow making tonight? or just let it go for now?
Sounds like they will probably wait to turn the snow guns back on Monday night with the goal of opening mid week:

Gorgeous day here today, it topped off at 67 at New Haven Tweed near where we were hiking at Sleeping Giant under mostly sunny skies and I wish I had worn shorts. Had a nice view of the LI Sound and all the way across to the north shore of Long Island. Back to reality the next few days.
Vicki congrats to your grand niece and Joshua, a belated Happy Birthday!
Thank you Mark and wow what a day for you. It was lovely but not up to 67
Snowing in South Bend, Indiana during the second half of the Notre Dame-Navy game. Game is on NBC.
Thatβs a sign that next weekβs cold is already in the lower 48.
The leading edge is indeed there. Two days away from our address.
Spectacular afternoon yesterday.
Thanks TK.
New post…
