Monday December 8 2025 Forecast (6:47AM)

DAYS 1-5 (DECEMBER 8-12)

This week we will have a parade of small and generally weak to borderline moderate disturbances and low pressure areas moving through our region. The overall pattern is cold, but there will be one brief milder interlude ahead of one of the systems. We had a weak system go by to our north last evening with a few snow flurries in southern NH and far northern MA, as was expected, but nothing to the south. Today’s weather is dry and chilly. The chill continues tomorrow as clouds increase ahead of a warm front, which can produce a period or two of light snow, mainly from the I-90 belt northward, sometime at night. This will lead in the brief shot of milder air for Wednesday ahead of a cold front, trailing the next low passing to our north. This results in a rain shower chance from midday to early evening Wednesday. After the front goes by, colder air returns and untreated surfaces will become icy by early Thursday morning. Thursday’s weather will be blustery and colder with a chance of passing snow showers as upper level low pressure moves overhead. The cold hangs on but the wind will ease up during Friday as low pressure moves away and high pressure builds in with dry weather.

TODAY: Abundant sun. Highs 23-30 except 28-35 South Coast. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, gusts 20-25 MPH.

TONIGHT: Clear. Lows 8-15 except 15-22 South Coast. Wind NW 5-15 MPH shifting to SW and diminishing.

TUESDAY: Sun gives way to clouds. Highs 28-35. Wind variable to SE up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. A period or two of light snow favoring I-90 northward late evening. Chance of mix to rain showers south of I-90 overnight. Lows 20-27 except steady 28-35 southeastern MA and southern RI evening, rising slowly overnight. Wind SE under 10 MPH shifting to SW up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Midday and afternoon rain showers likely, may be mixed with snow in southwestern NH and north central MA higher elevations. Highs 38-45. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly to partly cloudy. Rain showers possible in eastern areas in the evening. Icy areas on untreated surfaces overnight. Lows 28-35. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Sun/cloud mix. Chance of snow showers. Highs 32-39. Wind NW 10-20 MPH, higher gusts.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Chance of a snow flurry. Lows 17-24. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: Partly to mostly sunny. Chance of a snow flurry early. Highs 34-41. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, diminishing.

DAYS 6-10 (DECEMBER 13-17)

Overall pattern is cold and features at least a couple disturbances / low pressure areas moving by quickly with precipitation opportunities. Hard to time and detail these chances beyond 5 days out, but will bring them into better focus as they get closer.

DAYS 11-15 (DECEMBER 18-22)

This period remains low confidence in forecasting, but still watching for a Great Lakes low pressure area to allow a short-lived warm-up and a chance of some snow/mix/rain, before cold returns with any disturbances bringing some snow or snow shower chances. Again no real detail or timing is possible this far in advance.

  1. Good morning and thank you TK.

    24 here. Made 41 yesterday.

    Ocean: 48

    Wordle: 4

    RANT OF DAY:

I am sick to death of local mets plastering the screen with feels like temperatures!!!!!
Just report the temperatures. Anyone with half a brain knows it feels colder with wind. Stop wasting time with this crap. I almost threw my shoe at the TV last night.
!! People down the street could hear me yelling at the TV met!!!

On a lighter note: thank you Houston for beating Kansas City. I hate Kansas City in the worst way!!!

    1. I absolutely agree with you JPD abut those “feel like” temperatures, not to mention the PV by the WBZ radio announcers every morning and this morning was no exception.

We will need KC though to beat the Broncos for the #1 seed. The Patriots MUST have a better record than the Broncos. A tie will do the Patriots no good.

      1. Broncos have to play: Packers, Jaguars, Chiefs and Chargers.

Patriots have: Bills, Ravens, Jets, Dolphins.

Only one of those games feel “easy” and that’s the Jets. All of the other teams are fighting for a spot. Maybe by the time we get to the Dolphins they won’t be but they still have a strong chance and they’ve been looking good. That said, we’re still set up for the “easiest” path to the one seed. If we lose to the Bills off of a bye, I’m gunna say we wouldn’t want another bye and it’s better we don’t get the one seed. lol

  2. That snow shower/squall band is showing up nicely on the skaket beach webcam.

Most of it looks to be virga.

But, its a pretty dark cloud !!

  3. On a scale of 1-10, I give JpDave’s rant a score of 11. That makes as much sense as obsessing over a non-standardized calculated value having to do with wearing no clothing outside in the cold weather.

The wind chill atop Mt. Washington is currently -56 F. We all know how that feel!

    🙂

    I got Wordle in 3.

    1. Thanks and nice work SClarke, You have been Anointed engineer for now. We all trust you to drive the train well!

  4. TK, are you now no longer eying something for around Dec. 13th?

Or is that inclued in your 11-15 outlook and covered by

    chance of some snow/mix/rain????

There was previous posts by you that you were watching that time period.

Models for now have seemed to drop that system.

    Thanks

  5. Thanks, TK.

I am far from impressed by ANYTHING that has happened this month in SNE. Looking ahead, NOTHING looks impressive or un-December-like. It’s been nice to have temps mostly below normal. But in Boston there’s been a grand total of 1 (as in uno, un, ein) night in the teens. Sure, we will have some more nights in the teens this month. But how on earth can that – together with the total absence of snow – qualify as a “December to Remember.” Too many American meteorologists overhype and don’t just state facts. I understand it’s a click-driven world. But this year’s frenzy has been especially annoying. I’m muting the mets I’m seeing on social media – all of whom have good credentials – who’ve been spewing this December to Remember garbage. I HATE HYPERBOLE. I detest it in our President. But I also cannot stand it in the media or in meteorology.

    1. I, 100%, agree with you Joshua because its the gold posts that are being set or implied.

In actuality, it is a December to remember to start, by the data. 7 days in, all 7 have had a negative temp anomaly and the monthly temp anomaly is -7.1F. That, actually is, remarkable !!!

But, its lost in translation, because it SEEMS like nothing special is going on because all the people you refer to make it seem like the ice age, with flesh freezing temps and feet upon feet of snow should have already happened.

The reality is: its been a super impressive start for cold, but seems quite average against terrible, over the top prognostications since November 1st, really.

      1. And that is Logan, at -7.1F. The other 3 southern New England major climate stations have even larger colder anomalies.

    2. You are also narrowing your opinions down to one geography. Virigina, SE Kentucky, northern NC are under Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories again today, for the second time in the last 4 days. Depends on your location.

That said, in SNE – it has been a VERY cold start – well below normal as Tom said. And pretty hard to judge a month on a whole here when we have over three weeks yet to go. Plenty of opportunity for a few snow events as well. If this does end up being a top 3 coldest December on record (as TK and Eric F have both said is possible), that would be something I would remember for a long time.

The “December to Remember” quote you are referring to was from Mike Masco who is a met on WPIX in NY. I actually like his posts and analysis though do agree he tends to go overboard a bit with his wording, especially with respect to winter weather prospects.

  6. Thanks, TK!

Sadly, it was 45 years ago today that John Lennon was gunned down in NYC. We learned the news when Howard Cosell announced it during Monday Night Football in a game between the Patriots and the Dolphins. I was a junior in college studying for finals and heard the breaking news during the game.

  7. More thoughts on Joshua’s post and again, I am aligned with his thinking ……

This goes to the idea of treating November and into December as autumn and a ton of people on Twitter have simply not done that. They have treated it like mid Jan to mid Feb, the absolute heart of winter.

But, that constant bombardment is messing everyone up.

For instance, today should be 40-45F. That is the avg.

Today is going to struggle to get to 32F. That is remarkable.

But, it does not seem like that because if one takes in whats on twitter, for weeks and weeks now, the mindset is thinking it should be 10F. And then the 32F seems, well, warm.

The message across twitterverse should have been a simple outlook of chilly to cold second half of autumn. That would have sufficed.

    1. Yup.

Today, the cold air is here, but the disturbance is to the south.

In a few days, its the disturbance passing to our north, which re-introduces new cold air, but unfortunately, we’re in the mild sector for that one.

At some point, the cold air will be established AND the ripple of low pressure will be on the boundary just south of us and maybe/hopefully, this is the one !!!!!!!!

      1. could be. NOTHING big, but light to moderate festive amount of snow. Would be nice. We shall see.

Depending on timing and intensity, could have quite an impact on the Patriots Buffalo game at Gillette.

        1. Oh, that would be cool !!

We do need more of a ripple or wave of low pressure to help the coast.

Nothing too strong/wrapped up to kick up a decent breeze off of the ocean. So, that particularly simulation looks good.

      1. If its still there Friday morning, I’ll allow for a little anticipation.

        Until then, it could be sunny and 38F 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

  8. The air temperature out at Boston Buoy (16 N miles East of Boston) is 26 degrees, showing how cold this air mass is.
Now will it have any affect on the ocean temperature, which is still at 48.

        1. IIRC it was 46 in 2011/2012 when my niece did the plunges on New Year’s Day in memory of her dad. that was considered warm. Unless I have the incorrect temp

        2. Ok, 46…45 the lowest. 😉

I bet ocean temperature wasn’t all that low back in 2015 in spite of 100”+ of snow.

          I would be curious.

  9. Yes JPD .. that was the Billy Idol album I was referring to.

When I first saw it several years ago I though – ok he’s not going to be really serious about this, right? But he was. There’s a little bit of the classic Idol personality in some of the songs there, but he took it seriously.

I follow him on social media. He still occasionally goes out to perform and turn back the clock, within reason, but in daily life he’s a happy grandpa who adores his granddaughter immensely. 🙂

  10. There’s just a tad too much wind for today to be perfectly “Halcyon” but it’s close. I absolutely love weather like today at this time of year. Cold, crisp, bright. I remember more days like this growing up in the holiday season than snowy ones.

    1. I agree that today is great for being outside. We parked by the Groton library and walked around enjoying all the old buildings and the Christmas decorations. The sidewalks are mostly in good condition.

      1. I just really love weather like this. I don’t “need” snow on the ground to feel festive. Qualifying it is just self-limiting. I remember more “mostly bare” or “bare ground” Christmases than I do snow covered ones. Give the climatology of the region it makes sense. Occasionally I’ll see someone from around this area post a comment on social media “Back in the 70s it was snow covered every year from Thanksgiving to March.” This could NOT be more INCORRECT. There’s a term for remembering things this way, but it escapes me. But it has to do with remembering one or two instances when something was a particular way and then applying it to “all the time”. It’s literally defined by psychologists but I can’t think of it. I know it’s real, because I’ve fallen into the trap of thinking that way myself, but now I am much more aware of it and avoid it for the most part.

I distinctly remember my brothers often complaining about the “lack of snow” before and during Christmas. It’s not unusual. 😉

  11. From Petey b

You just witnessed the earliest sunset of the year! At 4:11 (& a few seconds) today, the sun set in Boston. Tomorrow it sets a few seconds later, and so forth unitil the summer solstice. We are still “losing” daylight on the sunrise until the 21st, so technically the days are still getting shorter, but this is an important milestone in December. Enjoy those extra seconds in the afternoon.

    1. Yes, indeed! It was 4:14:46 here. Tomorrow, the sun will set one second later! I would use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30+ for that extra second of rays! 🙂

    1. Still not quite dark enough to trip some of my lights. 4:30 seems to work best here.

Love the dark. Hate that I can’t drive

      1. It’s not completely dark here when I turn them on, but they still sparkle in the lowering light. I love when night falls and they’re already shining. 🙂

  12. According to Eric, we are in a suppressed storm track so no significant (or even measurable?) snowfall anytime soon. 🙁

    Also according to Eric:
    Latest measurable Boston snowfall: 12/24/1925.

    1. We’re actually not. We’re currently in a stretch where 3 lows in a row pass north of here.

The systems are generally moisture-starved. This was not forecast by responsible forecasters to be an overly snowy period. Hype-masters that had no business communicating the information “wish-casted” the December snow blitz.

It was forecast to be cold and on the dry side overall. Also, everybody here knows that you cannot just say “no measurable snow” and be confident of that beyond about 4 days. I feel like I repeat this multiple times annually.

Boston will not break their record for latest measurable snow. December 24 1925 is incorrect. In fact, Boston didn’t even have measurable snow on that date. They recorded a trace. The latest date for the first measurable snowfall at Boston is January 13 2000.

  13. Logan has about a 50/50 shot of recording measurable snow tomorrow night per trends on reliable high res short range guidance.

    1. It’s usually the shorter term ones that surprise more than the ones you track for 7-10 + days.

The rain example of this was the Thanksgiving rain in Plymouth that soaked the parade when 24 hrs earlier, a reasonable forecast for the data at that time, was for a few showers.

Almost a half inch rain later …….

  14. 18z GFS is further south on this run for the weekend threat but still delivers and inch or two to portions of CT, RI, and SE MA.

And then it delivers a major Christmas Eve Nor’easter with heavy snow changing to ice and back to snow. Santa will be slip sliding away off of the roof if this verifies…

Run Total Kuchera Snow with 30-50″ across NY and northern NE, lol. Most of the snow in SNE is from this system.

    Cue up the Bing Crosby…

  15. Down to 11F here…definitely going into the single digits.

This is really some impressive cold for early December. For that matter, it’s still late autumn!

0z GFS still has the snow event Sat night into Sunday as the clipper passes south of us:

    https://www.pivotalweather.com/model.php?m=gfs&p=prateptype_cat-imp&rh=2025120900&fh=129&r=us_ne&dpdt=&mc=

Kuchera Snow with 1-2″ north of the Pike and 2-4″ Pike and points south:

  16. Unfortunately, we might have a case of again being extra cold but poor timing on systems once again.

I think our best chance this season is now through mid-January, with the SE ridge and El Niño in play by mid January.

  17. 6z gfs total snow for Boston through Christmas: 0 inches!!!

Now I want to see the 12z Euro. 0z likely over amplified.

I have no power. Been out since 1:05 AM. Due back 930 AM. With it being so cold, will food be ok in fridge and freezer? Normally they say 4 hours, but it is so cold out and it is in a pantry expo
sed to outside walls and it likely in the 50s in there. 62 in our kitchen. I am really pissed at eversource. Biggest piece of shit company in the nation!!!!

Ocean still at 48. It doesn’t want to budge.

I’LL try hooking my laptop to my phone for internet. Hopefully that will work

  18. The weather weenies out on s.m. are going to need a lot of emotional support when they see the 00z ECMWF.

    Anyway, new post!
