DAYS 1-5 (JULY 7-11)

Low pressure passing south of our region, in combination with high pressure in eastern Canada, gives our region a wet and cool day. Widespread rain and drizzle is expected with some pockets of heavier rain and the chance of some embedded thunder, though the latter will be a vast exception and not the rule. This system departs to the east with rainfall tapering off tonight. Clouds may linger early on Wednesday, especially in eastern areas, but sunshine will return and it will end up being quite a nice day. The high pressure area sinks to the south and it heats up a bit for Thursday but with continued dry weather. A cold front swings through the region on Friday bringing the chance for showers and thunderstorms before drier and slightly cooler air arrives behind the front for the start of the weekend.

TODAY: Cloudy. Periodic rain with areas of drizzle and fog. Some rain can be heavy. Highs 67-74. Dew point in 60s. Wind E to NE 5-15 MPH except 10-20 MPH with higher gusts South Coast / Cape Cod.

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Rain / drizzle ends west to east. Areas of fog. Lows 58-65. Dew point around 60. Wind NE to N 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Early clouds mostly I-95 belt eastward, otherwise mostly sunny. Highs 80-87. Dew point under 60. Wind N to variable up to 10 MPH, including coastal sea breezes, then S by late-day.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Clear. Fog patches interior low elevations. Lows 60-67. Dew point near 60. Wind S shifts to W under 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 77-84 South Coast, 85-92 elsewhere. Dew point near 60. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 65-72. Dew point 60+. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of showers and thunderstorms. Highs 82-89. Dew point rises toward 70. Wind SW 10-20 MPH, higher gusts possible.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Chance of an evening shower. Lows 61-68. Dew point falls below 60. Wind shifting to NW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Sun and passing clouds. Highs 78-85. Dew point in 50s. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (JULY 12-16)

Fair weather start and end of period. Watching the period July 13-15 for some higher humidity including shower and t-storm chances as low pressure passes north of the region.

DAYS 11-15 (JULY 17-21)

Overall pattern fairly seasonable but a little temperature variability with one or two shower / t-storm chances with passing fronts from the west.

        I don’t know about that. I failed 8 games ago.
        Since then, I have had 4 3s, 1 4 and 2 5s. I wouldn’t exactly call that on a roll. I like the 3s, and 4s, but NOT the 5s.

        I HATE 5s, 6s and fails!!!!!!

    A few observations on the U.S. men’s soccer team’s loss:

    – Don’t ever underestimate Belgium. I’ve been watching the Red Devils, as they’re called, for 45 years. They’re often a very talented team. While this year’s squad isn’t as good as the ones they’ve fielded in the recent past, their (technical) skill, passing, physicality, coaching, mentality, and creativity on offense are at another level compared to the U.S.
    – U.S. soccer has actually regressed since the late 1990s/early 2000s. The talent level just isn’t there. Enough to beat far inferior teams like Bosnia, but not nearly enough to belong to the world’s elite.
    – It’s NOT about lack of athletes. America has A LOT of great athletes. I think the biggest problem is that soccer in America is a mostly suburban and not urban (gritty) sport. When I lived in European cities, I noticed how the kids played soccer ALL of the time, on the street, in courtyards, on small patches of grass, in public parks. Not organized or planned matches. Just constantly playing the game. And often in rough and tumble ways, where the emphasis is on physicality and technique (skills). I just don’t see that in the U.S. men’s squad. The very best U.S. players are essentially second-tier players in Europe, who aren’t particularly skilled and definitely not tough.
    – It’s okay for the U.S. to not excel at one sport. Americans are exceptionally good at so many other sports.

    1. In all my years I have NEVER warmed up to Soccer.
      Was never my cup of tea and of course growing up it was virtually unheard of…. I think we were forced to play it at gym a few times in 7th and 8th grade, but that was about it.

  10. Thanks TK. Up to 2.2 inches of rain now with that heavy band just over Padanaram. Considering we have been in a drought it dawned on me that I have had a number of runs in the rain the last month – up to 5 now.

  14. 60s but also humid. Another couple of months until days in the 60s will not have such high dew points.

    Right now, I feel as sweaty as the Mexican and English players the other night at the Azteca stadium. Now that, by the way, was a brilliant soccer game between two highly competitive teams. They both gave it their all. There’s practically nothing as intensely taxing physically as what these players were doing for 90 plus minutes. All of them in prime physical condition.

    We were up to 2.35″ of rain for this event in Coventry when I left the house this morning at 10 and it was still raining. Now nearly 4″ for the first 7 days of July. Quite the recovery in the rain department! And it has been a beneficial rain….long duration light to moderate rain with a few heavier bursts. No deluges or flash flooding.

    Much heavier rain fell though across SE NN and southern CT. Many locations in southern CT received 4-6″ of rain and there are a few reports from Westchester and Orange County NY in the 6-8″ range…

  17. Thanks Joshua for posting about the World Cup soccer. I thought that this blog had lots of soccer fans including TK. Like JPD I wasn’t into that sport BUT I am now somewhat into it although I still don’t understand most of the rules other than whoever puts the most balls into the opponent’s net, wins Lol.

    Joshua, why is it that the US Women’s team wins all the time but the US men struggle so much? They looked AWFUL last night! Oh well.

    1. I believe the main reason we have seen USA women’s soccer (and other women’s sports such as hockey and basketball) so successful on the world stage is 1972’s passage of Title IX, combined with the fact that we have a much larger population than the countries that had women’s soccer programs prior to the USA (such as England, France, even Canada). Regarding Canada it’s obviously not the same with hockey, because of the massive popularity of the sport in that country. But with women’s hockey it’s basically US & Canada, and then the rest of the world.

        Well they’ll get to that part of it when it’s time to hype winter, I guess. Although I’ve already seen several “winter outlooks” pop up out there. HAHA! Good luck with that. 😛

  21. I know is early does anyone have any thoughts on August temps? Will we have above normal warm nights or normal to above normal daytime temperatures?

    1. The general idea on the guidance designed to handle that kind of outlook is “not that hot”.

  22. A sustained pattern of rain such as today’s would go along way towards easing the drought. It will take a while.

    I was departing work and remarked how this is some of my favorite weather and one of my workers thought I was crazy. Well, I am, so that’s ok. 🙂

  27. Today reminded me of July 4, 1978. It was a chilly rain that day as well. I believe the high was only 65 degrees.

  29. Tomorrow, coastal areas start with a north wind, which goes to east, then later in the days switches to south, then later at night goes to west. 🙂

        1. Many times per year .. all you need is variable winds. But this one is kind of cool because it’s going to go from north, to east, to south, to west, without really being “variable”.

  30. I do know that what we have do a whole lot with the drought, but the rain we had today was light and constant rather than a deluge. And that’s positive.

    2. It was a good “table setter” event. What we need is a few more events like this. Hard to do it in mid summer, but Friday’s potential is for fairly widespread showers, which would also benefit.

  31. 2.72” the final total here in Coventry CT and now up to 4.23” for the first 7 days of July. Over a months worth of rain in a week. We”ll take it.

    We are at about 20” now on the year so still probably tracking about 2-3” behind where we should be just past the midway point of the year.
