DAYS 1-5 (SEPTEMBER 5-9)
The large scale pattern across the country features a ridge of high pressure in the central US, which leaves our region in a northwest flow pattern on the east side of the ridge, with more amplification as an upper trough sits over our region now and drifts eastward into Atlantic Canada and the adjacent waters through the weekend. The flow around the back side of a surface low south of Nova Scotia will send some cloudiness into our region at times today and part of Sunday, which will be added to at times by diurnal cloud development. Pop-up shower chances are greatest west of I-95 this afternoon with limited coverage. Any area that does see a shower would only have it last a short time before it moved on. A trough may bring a quick-moving batch of showers in the pre-dawn hours to southeastern NH and northeastern MA Sunday, and the chance of a diurnal pop-up shower that day dwindles to nearly zero. Monday’s weather features more sunshine and less cloudiness and the rain chance drops to nil. So all in all, the holiday weekend is not bad, featuring mostly dry weather, a cooling trend on a north to northeast flow, and low humidity. Reminder that the north to northeast fetch will create rougher surf, some larger swells, and rip-current risks especially at north-facing and east-facing shores through the weekend. A trough swings through first thing Tuesday with clouds and perhaps a shower, and then clouds increase from the northwest ahead of the next approaching disturbance Wednesday. Guidance has trended faster in the medium range with that disturbance, indicating a shower chance may exist before that day is over. I’m leaning in that direction based on the type of pattern we will be in.
TODAY: Sun / cloud mix with clouds more dominant. A passing shower possible. Highs 68-75. Wind N to NE 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Variably cloudy. Shower chance is best overnight southeastern NH to northeastern MA. Lows 53-60. Wind N up to 10 MPH.
SUNDAY: Sun / cloud mix with sun more dominant. Highs 68-75. Wind N to NE 5-15 MPH.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 48-55. Wind N up to 10 MPH.
MONDAY – LABOR DAY: Sun dominates. Highs 71-78. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows 51-58. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
TUESDAY: Clouds and a possible shower early, then clearing. Highs 70-77. Wind W shifting to N 5-15 MPH.
TUESDAY NIGHT: Clear. Fog patches interior low elevations. Lows 50-57. Wind variable under 10 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Increasing clouds. Shower chance returns late-day. Highs 68-75. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.
DAYS 6-10 (SEPTEMBER 10-14)
Disturbances in a northwest flow are roughly timed to pass through early September 10 and late September 13 to early September 14 when brief shower threats occur, otherwise a mainly dry pattern with somewhat variable but overall near to slightly above normal temperatures.
DAYS 11-15 (SEPTEMBER 15-19)
Up-and-down temperature pattern with a couple unsettled weather episodes with quick-passing systems as the pattern remains generally the same in the waning days of astronomical summer.
Good morning and thank you TK.

Lovely morning for son’s and DIL’s half marathon. The area in Carlisle sounds incredible
“The TARC Fall Classic is held on land that was originally called Musketaquid, an Algonquin word for “grassy plain,” and was home to the Musketaquid Indians, the original stewards of this territory. We encourage our participants to educate themselves on the history of the land we will be running on as well as the history of the land where you train and call home. Running on Native lands gives us all the opportunity to connect with and reflect on the history of the land and the communities who have lived here for centuries.”
WHY oh WHY is the dew point NOT going down!!!!
GIMMIE A BREAK ALREADY!!!!!!
We are at 60 DP.
It’s not really supposed to drop through the 50s until after the maritime air mass is replaced by a continental one.
In the Pacific, names L, K, and M.

Active, just like we expected, as El Nino tropical seasons often are in the Pacific.
The Day After Tomorrow comparisons going around social media are absolute stupidity – acting like it’s some unprecedented thing. News flash: It’s not. 😉
Pete had posted a radar shot on FB showing migrating groups of birds
A roost ring. Trying to see if I can copy to here
Can’t figure out to copy video then post. Maybe someone else can.

I actually saved that loop this morning before I even saw his post. This is one of the best times of the year to “watch” that on radar (late summer / early autumn).
Can you share here?
That makes sense. Big migration time. My hummers are at the feeders more often now preparing for their trip. My female (named witchy woman because she won’t let males near the surface) has been hovering in my window watching me. They do this every year to say goodbye just before leaving.

We’ll have dominating NW flow aloft, with a brief relaxing the middle of next week to westerly flow and some higher heights to 582 dm

This allows a brief pulse of warm air passing through overhead.
Sensible weather translation: Wednesday night next week is likely to be a very mild/warm night compared to the upcoming nights and with a relatively warm start Thursday, perhaps a chance at 80F or the 80s again.

I know it’s only September and I know the jet stream climatologically is to be furthest north.
My eyes go to the upper left corner of these 500 mb projections.
Look at that massive, west to east jet across Alaska.
Not a major ridge, or a very early season cold upper low/trof. Instead, strong west to east zonal flow flooding western Canada with Pacific, maritime air. Not letting any early season chilly air build up there.
I wonder if the El Niño winter pattern is already in its infancy ……..
You’d only see bits and pieces of what “may” happen later, but not really that pattern yet. Too many changes and too long a time to go between now and then.
Thanks TK !
There are no tropical cyclones expected in the Atlantic during the next 7 days. There are not even any disturbances to keep an eye on. When we get to September 11 (next Friday), we will for the first time move beyond the climate peak of the season (September 10) since the start of the satellite era (1966) without at least one Atlantic hurricane.
Thank heavens. This summer has had enough natural disasters.
Thanks TK! Nice morning for golf – played Halifax which is not in the best shape. Many bare spots in fairways. But great pace. Finished in 3 hours 30 minutes.
Ok, NO SUNSHINE today.
Wind from the ocean is keeping dew points higher than they should be.
Awfully cloudy and quite cool.
Beautiful day for golf, tennis, fishing, hiking etc.
MISERABLE day for the beach.
There was some sunshine earlier this morning and there will be more this afternoon. Was not expected to be a sunny day or a prime beach day (by standard definition). Also was not expected to be bone dry. The trend is drier as we move through the 3-day weekend, but that is a process.
I expected dps in the 50s today, not 60s. just saying. I know it was sunny this morning, I was up. 🙂
It is cloudy during the prime of the day.
I don’t care about the beach, so I am good with today, except
for the freaking dew point. it just doesn’t want to go down.
I’ll be at Gloucester Harbor from late afternoon through mid evening today, and Hampton Beach from late afternoon through mid evening tomorrow.
I’m liking the weather for these plans. 🙂
As long as your plans do not include a swim, it is wonderful. 🙂 🙂
I love the beach in this weather. But then I honestly do not think there is any weather when I do not love the beach
Latest ECMWF projection for El Nino is out.
First off, I notice when these things get shared around social media, they are taken as infallible numerical predictions. They are NOT infallible numerical predictions. They are often quite accurate, yes, but they are not to be taken as 100% verified before they occur. Not sure why it seems that the further into the future the prediction is for, the more it’s taken as “written in stone”. Anyway … For what it’s worth, the indications are that the El Nino will peak between Thanksgiving and early December, and then weaken gradually during actual winter.
So, the “very strong” (not “super”, NOT “supersized” – those terms are INCORRECT) El Nino will be a factor heading into winter, but gradually loosen grip with time.
Again, just keeping it real, as always. 🙂
Will this translate into big March Snows? 🙂
Well, keeping in mind there are about 8 to a dozen indices to take into account, the ENSO impact would, on paper, mean that stormier weather would be more likely late versus early. Can that translate to big March snows? It can. It also may not.
I guess so. We’ll find out either way. 🙂
Well, if it snows after January 25, I don’t have to shovel it, since I’ll be in a 4 to 6 week lifting-restricted heart surgery recovery. 😉
That’s what the kids are for

I can’t tell you how many photos and videos of flooding are in my Facebook feed from up there.
Upper low, kind of parked. That’ll do it…
So tragic for that area
Patience pays out. Sitting in beach and a rain shower came and betting around me fled for the hills. I sat through it and have the beach to myself under a bright sunny sky – cool breeze though. A so-so beach day.
The best beach day of the 3-day weekend is definitely going to be Monday. 🙂
Nice!
Heading to Gloucester! Biiiiig fireworks show over the harbor at 9:15 p.m. after an 8:00 p.m. boat parade – the decorated boats coming down the Annisquam and through the canal into the harbor are so awesome to watch!
Paul??
Walked the shore early AM today and Deer Island (Winthrop) this afternoon. Cloudy but still one heck of a day.
I continue to be jealous. Wonder if we can move the ocean closer to here
We were 61 closed to 11 last night. 64 now.
I love these nights
Agree!
Still jealous. Got a room for rent 🙂
Sox up 5-0 in 7th.
Red Sox WIN 5-0. Final! 🙂
I truly hope they go on another big run this month. They need as much momentum as possible going into the postseason.
Thank you TK!
Thank you all for the birthday wishes. 🙂
