High pressure builds as upper level low pressure departs, resulting in fair, pleasant weather for today. While many folks use this as a travel day and not a day to enjoy, at least the weather favors travel! Our nice weather will continue on Tuesday even though a weak trough will scoot through the region with some clouds. You’ll find it a bit warmer than today. The outlook remains the same heading into midweek with a low pressure area set to move east southeast in a northwesterly flow aloft. This will cloud us up on Wednesday with episodes of showery weather Wednesday night and Thursday. This system exits by Friday and high pressure builds in that day with fair weather returning. A humidity spike accompanies Thursday’s unsettled weather, but it will be short-lived when a batch of dry air follows it quickly on Friday.
TODAY – LABOR DAY: Sun and passing clouds. Highs 71-78. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 52-59. Wind W up to 10 MPH.
TUESDAY: Sunny morning then a sun / cloud mix. Highs 73-80. Wind SW 5-15 MPH shifts to NW late.
TUESDAY NIGHT: Clearing. Inland low elevation fog patches. Lows 50-57. Wind N under 10 MPH then calm.

DAYS 6-10 (SEPTEMBER 12-16)
High pressure moves overhead then offshore between September 12 and 14 with fair weather and typical end-of-summer cooler mornings but warmer afternoons with notable temperature spreads from lows to highs. Watching the next frontal system for a shower potential later in the period – September 15 to early 16. If this front is slow enough, September 15 can end up a very warm day.
DAYS 11-15 (SEPTEMBER 17-21)
The final five full days of astronomical summer carry a mainly fair weather pattern with 1 or 2 brief interruptions for showers from passing systems. Temperature ups and downs but with an overall cooling trend.

The Danish Meteorological Institute has some good info for the arctic that might help. I have to do a little more digging. This particular tidbit came from a long-time colleague.
I was reading about this early then was side tracked. I found two interesting views.
One.
The claim that the temperature never reached 32°F at the North Pole during the summer of 2026 is false and stems from a misinterpretation of climate data. While the High Arctic region did experience an exceptionally cold start to the summer season, individual temperatures at the North Pole routinely reached and hovered around the 32°F (0°C) melting threshold, and the unusual cold snap ended by mid-August. The rumor went viral after climate skeptics shared screenshots of a graph from the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI). The truth behind the data reveals why the claim is misleading: [1, 2]
An Average Region, Not a Single Thermometer
The graph in question does not show a single thermometer reading at the geographic North Pole. Instead, it plots the calculated daily mean temperature averaged across the entire vast area north of the 80th parallel(which represents less than 1% of the Earth’s surface). As fact-checkers on Instagram pointed out, “The DMI graph is not a thermometer at the North Pole. My main memory of the hot September of 1983:
I started my teaching career 43 years ago today, September 7, 1983 at Coyle and Cassidy, the Catholic high school here in Taunton. Sadly, Coyle closed its doors for good in 2020. In the 1990s, we were among the nation’s top schools, having been named as a US Department of Education’s Blue Ribbon School in 1991 and 1998.
The high temperature that day was 93. The school did not have AC. I wore a tie, a long-sleeved shirt and a dark suit. I was 23 and I was so nervous that I hadn’t slept in two days.
The school was staffed by the Sisters of the Holy Union who lived on the third floor of the school. The sisters were a dedicated and wonderful group of teachers. One sister, in particular, was affectionately nicknamed “Sister Sarge” by the students. Sister was a tough, but a very compassionate and funny woman.
At the end of that very hot first day of school, I went back to the staff room. In comes Sister Sarge behind me. She goes over to the mini-fridge and pulls out a can of beer that, for whatever reason, was in the refrigerator.
Sister Sarge pulls up a cushioned chair, kicks off her shoes, puts her feet up on the coffee table, opens up her beer and exclaimed in a very loud voice:
“Shit, is it hot!”
That is how I remember the hot September of 1983!

An example, a cool shot moving through eastern Canada is directed straight eastward, through southeast Canada. There’s not NW flow to drive it straight down through New England.
Again though, not implying hot or even very warm, but I do think running above avg if this jet stream simulation verifies.

Lowell tracking west of even the most northwest Hawaiian island.
However, it will, for the next 12-24 hrs interrupt the NE trade winds and bring in almost the opposite sfc flow and so, the usual dry (downsloping) sides of the islands further east are under flood watches as this flow is suddenly upslope and can wring out some rain.
As you can see, the northwest most island is in for a lot of rain, they are already getting good rain.

Clarifying above, in trade winds, it’s the southwest sides of the islands that see downsloping and tend to see less precip than the east and northeast facing sides.
But, the flood watches in green are up on the south and southwest sides of the islands.
If the Atlantic was as active as the Pacific, SNE would most certainly have been in the crosshairs by now.
Can El Niño make a return next summer as well? 😉
The Atlantic has been that active before and we’ve not even come close to being threatened, so it’s not about the # of storms, it’s about the pattern.
CLARIFICATION: The N Pole temp has remained under 32F, not above, during the period June 1 through August 31, just in case there was any confusion. I didn’t word it clearly. 🙂
No mention of that other than on this blog.
My colleagues and I dig for info often ignored by mainstream media. It all counts the same, but they don’t think so. They’re wrong. We’ve been doing this science thing collectively much longer and more accurately than any one person who makes decisions in the mainstream … i.e., the “bosses”. 🙂

No changes in the short & medium ranges.
Looking out a distance, there is the potential for 1 or 2 really warm days (around September 14-15). Will a location approach 90? We’ll see. Now BEFORE you see the number “90” and suddenly think “heatwave”, think again. It’s not a thing that will last. Also, getting into the upper 80s to near 90 is not that unusual in the September days prior to the autumnal equinox. We’ve had it many, many, many times. It’s been a little less common over the past 25 years than it was in the late 1800s and 1900s to see 90+ in September. 1983 of course remains the unchallenged king of 90+ days in Boston.
Anyway, getting back on course … after that potential warm spike, indications are for a trend to near to below normal temps heading into the back half of the month.

With no tropical cyclones expected for the next 7 days (and no current disturbances) in the Atlantic, it’s now pretty much a lock to set the record for the deepest into the season without a single hurricane. In fact, the record looks like it’ll be shattered by many days. We’re also at record low ACE for the Atlantic, which is not a surprise at all.
Meanwhile the Pacific remains active, which is typical for El Nino.
P.S. … I saw a story through Google today that referred to El Nino as “strong, potentially very strong”. NOT “super-size”. BRAVO!!! They got it right. I hold fast in my opposition to the term “super-size” for El Nino. Nothing about the measurement of El Nino has to do with size anyway. It’s exceedingly misleading and unnecessary.
