  1. Reposted AccuWeather Quiz (from Longshot):

    Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

What was the biggest recorded snowflake to fall to Earth?
    A) 5”
    B) 12”
    C) 15”
    D) 19”

    For the record…
    Tom & JimmyJames guessed B.
    Vicki & WeatherWiz guessed C.

I will add my guess to this one and also say C.

  2. is that band of snow over the ocean ocean effect. is it effecting gloucester and scituate. moving from northeast to west, southwest

  3. My Super Bowl prediction
27-24 Ravens and Ray Lewis will finish his career as a 2 time Super Bowl Champion. I am going to with Joe Flacco as the MVP.
What are your predictions for Super Bowl winner and MVP???

    1. Any team but the ravens…….hmmm that doesn’t leave many does it ;). Ill say ravens 37-24. Not rooting for ravens – have never liked them but do admire Flacco – but my guess is they win even if I want 49ers

  4. Anyone watching golf. Wonder if Phil will set a record. Hes -24 going into last round. Will be interesting to see

      1. If that band of snow from the ocean maintains itself, then maybe.
They can go “poof” at any moment.

  5. I agree with tom heavy dusting here in pembroke. Old salty what’s the scoop up there. I’m actually going with 49rs today. I just can’t root for Baltimore. Don’t underestimate Sanfrancisco, very, very good team. I think there hungrier and a better team.

    1. John,

I awoke much earlier and the SUN was shining. Then I snoozed for awhile and rolled out of bed just before 10 and it was snowing. Nothing heavy mind you.

There is about a 1/4+ inch dusting out there.

Intensity keeps varying. At times extremely light while at other times bigger flakes are falling as it looks for a moment that it means business only to
      revert back to extremely light.

Can’t tell you much more. Keep watching that radar.

    2. I don’t even plan on watching the game. Not Pats = No Game! 😀

Although, I can’t rule out tuning in at times.

Wife and I will be watching Downton Abbey at 9PM for sure.
      😀

  6. Vicki I am watching the golf. I was saying yesterday imagine if your Brent Snedaker and your 18 under par for 54 holes yet your trailing by 6 shots. The way Mickelson is playing I would be surprised if he doesn’t win this tournament. He needs to shoot a 64 today to set the all time record for lowest score under par for a 72 hole PGA tour event.
Getting back to Joe Flaco if he leads his team to a Super Bowl win he moves up to the next level. He has a great record in the playoffs on the road.

    1. Agree re flacco. It’ll be the only positive to me if Baltimore wins. Agree with John re not discounting 49ers tho

      1. Husband said course record he believes is -28 held by calcavecchia (sp). Would be very exciting if he breaks all time low. Hes unpredictable so hope he just plays his game. Go Phil. It’ll be fun

  7. That track the EURO is depicting looks very similar to snowicane in February 2010 where SNE had rain but just over the CT MA border down to NYC had several inches of snow.

  8. WeatherWiz… The snow “picked up” on the east side of town. Bigger flakes and slightly lower visibility. Cold roads so the snow is just blowing around them and then off to the sides and middle. No treatment needed to this point.

O.S. … The winds just above the surface are from the northeast as evident by the cloud-movement. A NW drift at the surface. Just enough for a touch of convergence and enhanced snow on a rather small scale.

    1. Thought so. Thanks for confirming. I’ve seen this before.
No great shakes for sure, but a wee bit of a surprise. 😀

      1. Speaking of shakes… McD’s is already serving the Shamrock. A bit EARLY. Why don’t they hype up a pink heart strawberry shake for Valentines Day? 😛

            1. They won’t even list it!!!!!!!

Vanilla McCafé Shake (12 fl oz cup):
Vanilla Reduced Fat Ice Cream, Vanilla Shake Syrup, Whipped Cream, Maraschino Cherry

              I’d like to see what’s in the “Vanilla Shake Syrup” !! 😀 😀 😀

If I’m not mistaken it includes Propylene Glycol. 😀

  9. Sun was out earlier, around 8: a.m. in Sudbury then it clouded up and started snowing. Just very light flurry right now. It’s chilly out but not bad w/o any wind.

    1. You are on the western edge of an area of light snow that developed on a convergence line over the water then spread inland.

The radar looked like somebody dumped out a bottle of blue/green shampoo and watched it spread out.

  10. From NWS re: Friday Storm:

THE 00Z ECMWF VARIED GREATLY FROM ITS 00Z RUN (I think they meant 12Z run. Again why don’t they proof what they put out! :D)
AS WELL AS THE GGEM AND GFS…AS IT TRIES TO DEVELOP A SOUTHERN
STREAM SYSTEM AND WORK IT UP THE COAST. FOR NOW…LEANED AGAINST
THIS OUTLIER SOLUTION AND KEPT CONTINUITY TO THE PREVIOUS
    FORECAST

      1. The projected high won’t have much influence on p-type. That high temp could occur at midnight and then fall. We’ll have to see how that all works out.

        1. So will that effect the afternoon/ tonight ban coming through or just ending that first ban. Been saying that pm ban will have the accumulation. Agree tk, or anybody.

          1. Any of the stuff can accumulate because the air and ground are cold. The stuff tonight is from a synoptic disturbance and I think they were looking for it to be a bit more widespread, along with a touch of ocean enhancement.

  11. 1000 AM UPDATE…
MAJOR CHANGES ARE IN STORE FOR TODAYS FORECAST. UPPER LEVEL
SHORTWAVE CONTINUES TO APPROACH THE REGION TODAY PUSHING AN OCEAN LOW OUT PAST THE BENCHMARK. THIS LOW WILL UNDERGO CYCLOGENESIS TODAY…HOWEVER THE BEST LIFT/ENERGY/MOISTURE WILL MISS SNE AND STAY OUT TO SEA. HOWEVER THIS LOW HAS CAUSED FOR GOOD NORTHERLY NORTHWESTERLY WINDS RIGHT NOW YET ALOFT AT 925 MB VWP SHOWERS EASTERLY WINDS. BELIEVE THESE EASTERLY WINDS WILL PREVAIL THROUGH MOST OF THE DAY. WITH A COLD AIRMASS OVER RELATIVELY WARM OCEAN…OCEAN EFFECT SNOW WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE REST OF THE MORNING INTO MID-DAY. UNCERTAIN ON WHEN IT WILL SHUT OFF AS UPPER LEVEL WINDS ARE SLOWLY SHIFTING TO THE SE.
LATEST RADAR IMAGERY SHOWS A GOOD BAND OF OCEAN EFFECT SNOW OVER METRO BOSTON REACHING INTO METROWEST…DOWN TO NORWOOD AND EVEN UP TO GLOUCESTER…PER SPOTTER REPORTS. THIS BAND WILL REDUCE VSBYS AND WILL DROP NO MORE THAN 2 INCHES OF SNOW. OCEAN EFFECT SNOWS WILL ALSO CONTINUE ACROSS THE CAPE AND ISLANDS… ALTHOUGH NOT AS PRONOUNCED. BELIEVE A DUSTING UP TO AN INCH FOR THE DAY… MORE LATER THIS EVENING.
MAJOR CONCERN IS THE POSSIBLE COASTAL FRONT SET UP LATER TODAY.
ALTHOUGH SURFACE WINDS DO NOT REALLY INDICATE ANYTHING AT THIS
TIME…UPPER LEVEL WINDS SHOWS POSSIBLE CONVERGENCE. EVEN LOOKING AT THE SURFACE NH WINDS ARE DUE NORTH WHILE IN KBED AND KOWD…NW WINDS. COASTAL FRONT SET WILL ALLOW FOR MORE ENHANCE AND THEREFORE MORE SNOW THEN ORIGINALLY FORECAST. WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR FOR POSSIBLE DEVELOPMENT.
ACROSS THE SOUTH COAST…MAY SEE A DUSTING BUT BELIEVE THE BEST
REGION TO WATCH IS ACROSS THE EAST COAST OCEAN EFFECT SNOW MAKER.
SEEMS THAT THE NAM MODEL HAS A GOOD HANDLE ON CURRENT CONDITIONS PER QPF AND POPS. TRENDED TEMPS TO MORE OF THE HIRES MODELS.
STAY TUNED FOR THE LATEST UP DATES ON THIS CURRENT SYSTEM.

      1. Nice goal by rays kid tk. Ray must be so pumped. I hope he can stay with the Bruins, there happy with him so far.

        1. It was excellent and all they needed last night. Great recovery from a bad home game 2 nights before.

I have a B’s jersey coming my way as a gift. I need to decide if I want home, away, or 3rd jersey. I think I’m going with the 3rd. Then I have to decide name & number. I’m torn between BOURQUE for the name and 48 for the number .. or customizing it as TOPKATT for the name and 88 for the number. 🙂

            1. I think I will. I’ve been carrying that name # number around with me since 1983. And I bet right after I got Bourque 48 he’d change his #. 😛

              TOPKATT 88 it is!

            2. Or you could go with the number that Chris wears with tk. Did some research on the kid last night and it all looks good. I have a feeling this kid stays in Boston and may become a big story. Julian likes his play style and is giving him the opportunity to showcase his talent. Where does his brother play. To me Ray bourque was a class act here.and I don’t blame the guy for going to Colorado to grab the cup.

              1. I never held that against Ray. I think Harry and the management did the right thing. The B’s had no shot at the cup that year. Ray deserved to win one. I’m glad he got it. It would have been monumental to see him win one with the B’s but it just was not meant to be.

        1. Yup, and really, it’s going to continue through most of
the afternoon? Um Err. Um. I believe it has just about quit already!
          😀 😀

    1. I always liked him and was wondering what happened with fox. I hope he stays with 5 as its a great weather team.

      1. I don’t have any inside info and even if I did I couldn’t say it here unless it was official. But I have a feeling he’ll be hanging around 5 for some time. I hope so anyway!

  12. As the band out by the water decreases, the band over Route 93 and a few miles either side has intensified and the visibility is down to about a mile at Woburn now.

  13. still snowing here…. my freind on the east side of town said that visabilitities were down and that they had about a half inch of snow …. i only have a dusting. but snow is still coming down. its been snowing since 7am this morning with small tiny flakes to bigger flakes that go down lightly. watch for some areas east of I95 getting up to 2 inches. cape and islands get 2-4 inches.

    1. I’m not sure the Cape gets that much unless tonight’s stuff packs more punch. All the ocean-effect so far has been Boston area north… And the winds look like they may be veering a little to keep it that way for a while.

  14. The Biggest game this country has to offer plays today,, THE SUPERBOWL!! 100’s of millions watch worldwide, it should be a national holiday the way people gather around the tv, enjoy!!

    1. The most prestigious trophy the Lombardy Trophy along side the World Cup, expecting 50-60 people, what’s everyone doing today for the game?

      1. Watching the ads, Charlie is as fun as the game. I already started.

        http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=o2prAccclXs&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Do2prAccclXs

The horse and man remind me of my daughter with her first pony. But what caught my attention was the red lead rope. My brother gave an identical one to daughter when she got that pony. I’ve rarely seen others like it. You can tweet to name the foal. My whole family has tweeted to name it chris in memory of my brother. Probably never happen but would be special

          1. It is not to mention a great excuse to make extra food We have BBQ chicken sliders, dirty shrimp and stuffed cherry tomatoes on the menu. And creme brûlée for dessert. What r u having Charlie ?

  15. 49rs win going away in the 4th quarter. The niners defense is the best we have seen in 10 years. Final score will be 41-28 but won’t seem that close.

          1. Daughter just returned from Wrentham and said it cloudy and cold but no snow. Been snowing here all morning

    1. Its going to start backup this afternoon. This wad a two band setup, look for more accumulation later today/ night. I’ll just sit down for game and watch the phone will ring if not before.

  16. My SIL is making fun of my 37-24 guess and it was a guess as I don’t know the teams well enough. He says its impossible to predict – two good teams. And no way either gets to 37. I may have to root for ravens just because

  17. We have our own little snowstorm NW of Boston now. It’s just stuck in place. Big flakes, light to moderate snow for over an hour so far.

    1. Cool. I’m in wayland and its stopping here but has snowed in Framingham all morning

I am amazed to see people skating on lake cochituate. They were yesterday also and several were out about 50-60 feet from shore

    2. I don’t know if you saw my question could boston pick up a couple of inches tonight in the Longwood medical area. I’m still guessing defently an inch but with this enhanced call maybe more do you think.

    1. Your going to get more soon. It has got quite overcast so look for snow I’d say by 4pm. I’m expecting a call into work by 6pm, bummer. I would be shocked if Boston does not atleast pick up an inch, possibly a tad more. Down my way 3 inches is still in play. I think 3 maybe just for immediate parts of the cape. The cape is doing well this winter. There have been past winters where the cape has made out well over other area’s. I would love a no call tonight but not seeing that.

  18. Snow all morning in framingham but very light and no accumulation other than the coating overnight. Same between here an wellesley

    1. Yep. Seems to be doing what was advertised. Look for the snow to continue into tonight. Is it sticking. I’m thinking now that the inch comes easily possible two due to the ocean enhancement and current wind directions. Would you agree. I think it gets interesting come nightfall. Tom It’s coming down this way just be patient.

  19. On the visible satellite and the radar, almost can make out a mini vortex just eastof Boston by maybe 20 miles or so.

I object 🙂 to how Marshfield has missed out on this. 🙂

      1. Best case scenario is that it swings southwestward and southward this evening for a time, hits our towns and because the sun will be down, it might accumulate some.

Looking at a Lowell, MA webcam, its snowing fairly steadily up there.

        1. I believe that should be moving down this way. I still think we pick up more down here than what previously fell early this morning.

    1. I think there’s a little trough/front set up. My wind has been NW here all day. And the snow is completely feathers. Over an inch now.

    1. Thats going to change Charlie. Look for the next ban to set up soon. That’s where more accumulation will form.

  20. Interesting little storm to watch over northeast MA. Just sitting and appears to be filling in but confined to the same area.

  21. Hey TK…

    1. Is the forecast now a BUST for the Cape and a nice surprise for Boston N&W thanks to the convergence? The last time I looked at radar, absolutely nothing down there. 🙂

    2. You have had the pleasure of meeting many local mets over the years but have you ever had the pleasure of meeting Ms. G? Just curious. 😉

    3. Could Friday’s system be more “snowier” for SNE than expected?

    1. You should be snowing in Dorchester, is that correct. Not a bust for cape yet as it was always late afternoon/tonight for there accumulation. I think Boston comes in with more than they were seeing,, that could be thie bigger surprise.

    2. 1. It’s hard to qualify it as a bust because the forecast was really for periods of snow and the accumulations with high ratios are so touchy as is.

      2. Which Ms. G are you referring to?

      3. It could be. Stay tuned…

  22. Tweet from Joe Joyce 2minutes ago….That damn Norlun trough.

    Joe Joyce ‏@JoeJoyceWBZ

Nor Lun instability trough setting up across NE MA & SNH..initial forecast for coating of snow in these areas will be underdone. 1-3″

  23. Btw euro shows a bomb for Friday but can’t really tell precip type as it does not show up. I am guessing rain to start but a change to heavy snow from the looks.

  24. Small storm but blown forecast…snowed last night…all day today…and tonight? So much for nothing to coating. I was hoping to not have to shovel in the morning.

    1. And just about 7 miles to the SSE Hingham has very light snow (snizzle). Can hardly even tell that it’s snowing. With a few bright spots in the sky.

  25. Was snowing off/on here in Dorchester during the morning and sun was shining at sunrise but snow has been light but more consistent for most of the afternoon so far with very brief “heavy” bursts.

Is more steady snow expected for overnight?

  26. Still nothing here, sun is actually showing in the far west , lots of clouds and a few flying renegade flakes

  27. Wind is still NW and it just keeps snowing and we are over 1 inch of very feathery flakes. There is almost nothing to this melted-wise.

  28. Hadi,

That Euro looks to be a Benchmark Storm. Sure “looks” like a snow maker
right now. Plenty of time for that to change, and if it does, can we guess?
    Hmm OTS! 😀

      1. Nam hinted at it for days. SO, IF this is, indeed, a Norlun, it
must be one of the weakest in History. 😀 😀

Does TK agree with Joe Joyce’s Assessment that it is a Norlun???

        TK?

        😀

        1. It can be argued as one, but I’m not sure it fits the classic definition. Bottom line is, it’s a boundary, causing lift, and snowfall. 🙂

  29. Snow has been pretty steady here. Just came in and had a good look at vis.
I’d estimate about 2 miles, so the snow isn’t all that heavy. Occasionally it
takes a run at 1 mile, but only briefly. We had a break from about 11:30AM
to NOON, but it has been steady non-stop since Noon. In that time it has
accumulated “perhaps” 1/4 inch, tops. 😀

  30. Just witnessed a site I have never seen in my life.
A whole flock of ROBINS just landed in a bush outside of my Window.

So many I couldn’t count. I got up to 25 and there were more coming and going.
So it had to be at least 30 of them. Some of them BIG and FAT. Amazing site.

    😀 😀

    1. I meant to post yesterday that we had several robins in our yard. I can’t remember ever seeing a flock though. Better predictor than the groundhog??

    2. I’ve seen occasional robins during the winter all my life in this area, but not a flock. I’m guessing they are heading south for the late part of the winter, which may be quite nasty around here. 🙂

  31. It appears that the snow over water will go over cape and the snow north of Boston is moving NW into southern nh, nothing here so far, don’t think it will reach here maybe a dusting but basically nothing, it hasn’t snowed at all today other than a few flurries from Norwood to north attleboro,, getting ready for superbowl

  32. Hey TK…”Ms. G” is the official state groundhog who lives at Drumlin Farm in Lincoln and yesterday she predicted 6 more weeks of winter. It was all over the morning newscasts yesterday especially on WBZ. I don’t know if the other stations carried it as much if at all. Personally I don’t really believe it, it is just that the media always has it as the top story every February 2nd.

  33. Tweet from NWS

@NWSBoston: Stay turned snow lovers. Only 0.4″ for Logan today. Seasonal total 9.2. Some models indicate a possible doubling of that total next Friday.

    1. It’s starting to slow down now. The boundary is weakening and running out of steam as the meso low drifts into Cape Cod Bay.

      1. What do you mean. I thought now is time for the second batch. That was to last till around midnight. Now is where Boston and the coast should pickup accumulation.

        1. I’m talking about the boundary that has been over the area from Boston NW since late morning. Things are shifting to the south, but that little meso low moving southward through Cape Cod Bay may take a lot of the energy with it. At the same time you have cyclogenesis going on offshore and dry air approaching from the west. That may spell a quick end to things right in and south of Boston, including Cape Cod. But we’ll see how much lift is left from the boundary still sitting out there.

        1. I haven’t been over there today but last night I was up here and when I left the area after midnight there was a very light snow falling. It was expected, at least by me.

  34. Tom. Look for things to start changing down here as snow just started back up. Now that It’s night look for accumulation quick as temps will be dropping. 1-3 tom is not out of the question.

  35. To TK: Thank you for reposting the QUIZ. Here is QUIZ and the answer.

    Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

What was the biggest recorded snowflake to fall to Earth?
    A) 5”
    B) 12”
    C) 15”
    D) 19”

The correct answer is Letter “C,” 15″. The recording took place in Montana in 1887.

The winners, alphabetically, are matt souza, rainshine, TK, Vicki & WeatherWiz.

      1. No wind and high moisture can cause it. I believe that there was a theory that static electricity may have played a role in these particular giant flakes.

  36. this is the kind of snow that stowe vt is known for. very light snow that continues to fall all day putting a light coating on top of the cruddy stuff.
been snowing here since 7 am this morning with various streangths from what i like to call snow dizzle to light snow to marginal moderate snow at times.

  37. Well, the 18Z GFS can’t seem to find the storm for 2/8. Sure it has a weak clipper,
but that is all. How can 2 models be so different? 😀

    1. They are just handling the 2 pieces of energy very differently. Obviously, one of them is majorly wrong.

        1. If I had to wager right now – not the Euro. But the fact it has it there 2 times in a row worries me a little bit. Just a LITTLE bit at this point.

          1. When does it go to More than a little? If it is there
            on the 0Z run?

Btw, see below. IT is ON the FIM experimental
model 12Z run, albeit more off shore. None=the-less it is there. So that makes 2 Models.
            😀 😀

Btw, what are your thoughts on this model?
There was a link to it from Mat Noyes page. 😀

            1. I think it’s a good experimental model. We’ll see where it goes.

If the Euro carries this storm for about 4 more runs then we’ll talk.

    1. I like it, tk I know on the nam it showed that band north of Boston swinging southward and going off cape but will it actually happen?

  38. You know….my grandkids are watching the game. It really bothers me to have to fast forward commercials that are breaking chairs over people’s heads

  39. I think someone on here mentioned this before…wbz has the worst website. Takes forever to load with all those sidebar ads and other junk…even then it’s choppy. Too hard to navigate now! Use to be easier.

      1. No Comcast…always been fine. The last year of so as its become flooded with ads it’s gotten almost unusable for me…even at work.

          1. I have FiOS too, but I agree with WeatherWiz – their website is terrible, and what annoys me most isn’t the side ads, but the top ads that push everything down when you’re reading. I used to go to their site daily, now, maybe once a week, and it’s sad, because I do enjoy reading the mets’ blogs – specifically BB and JJ.

            1. I wonder why I don’t have any problems. Odd. I have to admit I just tune out side ads but I never get one from the top. My fios is 75/50

  40. problem with this super bowl for me is that i hate both teams with a dying passion. i do not want kapernick to win the super bowl and give the 9ers their 6 super bowl win and i do not want the ravens to win because they are the ravens.

    1. Next to U2’s performance (which was right after 9/11) this has to have been one of the best!!!

      1. NFL has been trying to be more modern starting this year with halftime shows, also the older bands don’t get as high of a response, I’m not a big halftime hoopla I’m more into the football but my wife said it was fantastic and she’s not gonna butter it up so anyways enjoy the 2nd half

    2. Ugh. I must be getting old. But if they can get their butts in time to the music they should be able to match their lips

        1. I’m old. I just expect good taste. We didnt think it was. Well my kids didnt either so maybe I’m not so old

  41. It has started snowing here with a little more intensity, a coating so far, ravens r kicking the crap outa the 49ers, Go AFC!!

  42. Looked at 4 models and 3 sort of have a clipper like event next weekend and 1 has something more towards the classic noreaster type of look. Too early I guess to tell what kind of storm and type of precip. We might know something more around Weds. I feel like everything has gone south of us and then OTS for 2 years now. It’s time to make offerings to the snow gods.

      1. Dry air is eating away at the snow. The radar is showing it loosing intensity. The dry air is working.

      2. It’s eating away at it very slowly. I’m still snowing here but it’s been very light for some time and not really accumulating anymore.

  43. Well I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the snow as we took the train home from the Celtics game. Had a great time being spoiled in the Heineken Board Room. Now that is a great way to see a game. Comfy leather chairs, amazing free food, and private bathrooms. I will never be able to back to the balcony. Enjoy the rest of the Super Bowl!

  44. Just shoveled up what we had…more than I expected…hoping I won’t wake up to my work going totally to waste. 🙂

      1. I’m anal about snow removal…believe me I am well aware I’ll come home from work tomorrow and the people that didn’t shovel will have bare driveways. It’s my mania.

          1. HAHA. Believe me I wish I could change. Even an inch for means moving it around. I don’t do dustings. 🙂

  45. We had better enjoy whatever snows fall this week. Based on the CPC a major warmup with beneficial rains starting next Sunday through mid-month and a bit beyond. My bet is though the end of the month will turn cold again. At some point time will be running out of this winter and opportunities for snow will be fewer.

    1. I think tk was saying to not buy into that. He is seeing something that the second half of winter might be bad.

      1. I wouldn’t be surprised at a several day warm-up after this coming work-week, but I don’t think it lasts that long.

    1. Finally. But if one more person/announcer says the outage gave 49ers an advantage I may personally fly down and pull their plugs. Maybe they don’t get the power was out for both teams 🙁

      1. I think they are really just trying to make the point of it being a momentum killer for the Ravens and a chance to regroup mentally for the 49ers. It can have some impact.

        1. If a team needs everything to go as planned to win, I’d say that team isn’t the best team. Just my opinion.

  46. Wanna bet if it was the Patriots instead of the Ravens, the flag would most certainly have been thrown on that holding in the end zone? 😉

  47. I’m glad I didn’t care all that much who won. It’d have been very nerve-wracking. 😉
