Hot Weekend / More Storms Next Week

11:44AM

The high pressure ridge that pushed most of the storms back to the west of the WHW forecast area of southern NH, eastern MA, and RI, will start to flatten this weekend, still keeping us in the ongoing heatwave, but allowing a slightly greater risk that a few showers and storms could get into the area. The ridge will weaken and retrograde further to the west during the coming week, as a new ridge re-builds in the western Atlantic. This will leave our area in a weak area of troughing that will bring increase shower and thunderstorm activity, less heat (80s instead of 90s), but continued humidity.

Updated forecast for southeastern New England…

TODAY: Partly cloudy. Isolated late day thunderstorms. Highs 92-97 except 80s to around 90  South Coast, Cape Cod, and Islands. Wind W 10-20 MPH.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Isolated showers or thunderstorms early. Lows upper 60s to middle 70s. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

SUNDAY: Partly sunny. Scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Highs 90-95 except 80s South Coast, Cape Cod, and Islands. Wind W to SW 10-20 MPH.

MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY: Daily episodes of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Lows 65-72. Highs in the 80s.

  1. Thanks tk. In and out cloud cover here. But when Sun is out sure is hot. Relaxing day on tap.

    1. Enjoy!

Spending the first 2/3 of the day catching up after being in Boston Thursday and Hampton Friday.

Late afternoon BBQ in Middleton. Fireworks in Wilmington tonight. 🙂

  2. Thanks TK. Highs in 80s sounds good. I haven’t heard any noise from the utilities re brown outs

With regard to your comments re the concert on the 4th. I was sorry CBS dropped coverage and heard from several family members scattered around country who were disappointed

Having watched the show, we felt it was as good as any we’ve seen in years. It was more like the Boston street party I felt was the original intent if that makes sense and the focus totally on Boston this year showed once again the strength and the heart of the city where our independence was born.

The only thing I missed was the reading of the Gettysburg address as it was the 150th anniversary of the battle. But I understand as that would have taken the focus off of Boston.

Glad you had a great time and even on TV the fireworks are amazing so I can only imagine what they are like in person

    1. Does anyone know the reason why? Ill tell you what I read, it’s bc the national audience last year all switched to the NYC fireworks and NYC got triple the ratings Boston did while both were on air, next year unfortunately dallas or Chicago will start national televised fireworks on CBS but I think it’s gonna be dallas, alot of the national broadcast that would watch it said it was to boring and not enough big names in comparison, now I’m not saying I agree though I do think boston needs to be a little more edgy but that’s not boston hence why they’ve been bounced. Another hot day today ugh

      1. Ultimately when the local people could care less If its nationally televised it will eventually be pulled, I’ve always loved them nationally televised to say to everyone across country look Boston is the best but our lack of edge was our demise 🙁

        1. I guess what it has come to is we need ‘edge’ to keep people interested. Tradition is not enough. Boston is celebrating the birth of the nation in the place it happened. That should be more than enough for people. My opinion anyway. 🙂

            1. And I’m thinking also when mugar stops paying it may end but that would be the reason. His original intent wasn’t to have a better than anyone’s celebration.

      2. It’s sad that ratings are so important for that event. I love Boston’s event the way it is. What’s funny is that our fireworks display is larger than all of the other major cities to boot. 🙂

        1. It is sad but as it turned out I feel as if it was our gain. The focus wasn’t on celebrity and was on the meaning of the day. Mac made the comment that it seemed mor respectful and I had to think about that for a bit but think he’s right

When we make it about ratings, its anything but what it should be IMHO

    2. It is an incredible experience. I don’t even compare it to all of the other displays I go to during the year. 🙂

  3. Considerable cumulus coverage is keeping the temperature down a tad (Boston 1PM = 91), but humidity remains at outrageous levels. Even with AC, it is doing a number on my wife. She just cannot tolerate the heat and humidity combination.

    This weather SUCKS!!

    1. From NWS:

AS TO THE POTENTIAL OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS…BOTH THE RAP AND HRRR HINT AT SOME ACTIVITY ALONG AND AROUND THE MASSACHUSETTS TURNPIKE…THOUGH WIDELY SCATTERED AND ISOLATED. CUMULUS CLOUDS PER WEBCAMS IS LOOKING SOMEWHAT BUBBLY…MAYBE AN EARLY INDICATION OF THE CONVECTIVE-NATURE OF THE ATMOSPHERE. 😀

      1. There you Go!!! Someone is with me. I think that is absolutely HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D 😀

  4. Some convection beginning to show.
SW Maine and SW Berkshires in MA.

More to Come? We shall see. Much better chances than previous days. 😀

  5. Latest from NWS at Taunton:

MLCAPE VALUES RANGE AROUND 1K-2K J/KG IN AN
ENVIRONMENT OF WEAK DEEP-LAYER UNI-DIRECTIONAL SHEAR. IF THE WEAK IMPULSE CAN PROVIDE ENOUGH FORCING…THEN WIDESPREAD PULSE-LIKE THUNDERSTORMS ARE CERTAINLY PLAUSIBLE THIS AFTERNOON.

  6. NWS explains itself and very nicely, I might add:

US National Weather Service Boston MA
Sometimes even the simplest tools can provide clues about the weather. Check out this interpretation of the latest visible satellite.

Behind a weak upper-level disturbance, air is sinking and drying towards the surface, suppressing the cumulus field across Upstate NY.

But into Southern New England, the cumulus field is more dense and exhibits a bubbly appearance, an indication that the atmosphere is a more favorable region of lift and instability that could potentially result in showers and thunderstorms.

Widespread showers and on-severe thunderstorms will be possible today across interior portions of Southern New England, especially across Northern and Western portions of Massachusetts and Connecticut, including Southern New Hampshire. Main threats, if any, will be heavy rain and gusty winds.

  7. TK. With a re-building ridege in the western atlantic, do you think that translates to a return of more heat (i.e. temps of 90+) next week?

      1. Perhaps another long duration heat wave then? That’s the way I see it. Wanted your opinion.

        1. Hi arod. Do you think you could work on seeing it differently….like a short duration that ends abruptly on July 18—-19th at the latest. Thank you 😉

            1. That really works for me. I notice even Charlie isn’t quite as pleased with the weather today as he was yesterday

  8. I agree Tk with you that tradition is good but when you make tradition the main feature it looks outdated nationally, maybe a little less of the late 1700’s tradition and a little more now 🙂 I’m already getting busted on by old friends that there’s will be nationally televised out of Addison Tx next year, they say people from all over the world go to it, I’ve been there, it’s a very nice area with Fortune 500 companies all around there, they will get big time sponsors there, this heat makes me want to stay inside the AC 🙁 take it easy Tk, I want rain

    1. I see your point.
I guess it’s just sad that it’s even come to that.

The only rain through tomorrow will be the isolated to widely scattered variety. Should do a bit better during the work week ahead.

      Enjoy your day. 🙂

    2. I agree with part of what your saying Charlie. But I do also think that the new needs to mixed with tradition. Sometimes some of the “new” stuff gets so gaudy and ridiculous that I want to barf. I think Vicki said it best earlier…the event this year on the 4th was very respectful and sometimes you don’t get that at other events.

It’s nice however, to see other parts of the country get in the spotlight that has for so long been dominated by cities on the east coast.

      1. Keith I agree with you and TK and see what Charlie says but its not the feedback I’m getting from friends and family. To them it was the tradition of Boston that was special. Its fine with me that other areas get the spotlight for a while. I honestly didnt enjoy the past few years as much because I thought we got too far away from the reason for the day while we focused on the celebrities performing and the nation watching

  9. Cumulus beginning to tower some here.
Is true convection in the cards? We shall see.
    😀

  10. Just had a brief shower in south Plymouth. It was nice cooled off a bit but suns back and it’s hot & humid again.

  11. Im surprised to see the topic of conversation is on the pops and not that horrible plane crash at the sanfrancico airport. Amazing that everyone was not killed. My neighbor is having a huge bash with fireworks tonight. We just came home to cool off. This is the longest heatwave in some time. Back to the party, not a bad birthday.

    1. John I’m not sure anyone knew about the crash. I just found out. I heard 8 in critical condition – 2 of whom are children. Awful

      1. Yes, amazing not all were killed. Did you see the plane. Back at my neighbors and more comfortable now. This birthday has been sitting on my but all day, it’s cool. My wife and son are buying me a cover for my truck. It’s going on Tuesday.have a nice night Vicki.

      2. Terrible situation.

        3 most likely causes:

        Pilot error
        Equipment failure
        Wind Shear

The weather was clear, so unless there was some sort of
funky air currents going on that would cause that much shear,
I’m betting is was one of the other reasons.

I just hope there wasn’t a 4th reason, terrorism and some sort
        of sabotage.

We’ll find out fairly quickly I think, since the flight and voice recorders were both recovered in great shape. Also the pilot is OK as well and can tell investigators much.

That plane hit the sea wall with its tail section first. Very unusual.

        1. Oldsalty if I were to guess the way it landed could have been pilot Erie. Witnesses said the front wheels went down maybe too soon.

          1. John, you “may” be correct, but not knowing enough I didn’t want to go there. We shall see.
Equally likely, some sort of equipment failure.

Isn’t this the plane that has had small fires resulting from Battery malfunctions?

            1. I thought – and that’s a stretch – that the landing gear was down and the problem began in the tail. I’m about to call my SIL who will know more about the planes history but I seem to remember she’s on a flight

            2. Not sure, probably not because they were rated five stars last year. I guess this company has a spotless record. I believe mechanical problems may have been the player and the pilot could be a hero in the end. He was the last out of the pit.

  12. John I’m sorry. I didnt wish you a happy birthday. I know I wished you an early one but that’s not the same. I hope you enjoy every second!!

  13. They said initially 2 possibilities. Plane came in with landing gear down and was in runway. No distress call from pilot. Pilot had nose up and tail down – flaring the plane – as it should have been but plane seemed to end up hitting tail first. So either a microburst driving tail down further than it should have or pilot error where pilot came in too low and too slow driving tail into ground

    1. I hate to speculate as I gave two possible scenarios. But the way it came down seems odd. Like I said they have a a+ safety rating.

  14. Happy Birthday John!!!
Terrible situation in San Francisco. I was watching the golf when CBS News interupted the coverage. Looking at the pictures it is amazing only two people lost their lives. Hopefully that number does not rise but with that said its two lives too many.

  15. Answer to today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

The lowest temperature on Earth was recorded in which month?
    A. January
    B. February
    C. March
    D. July

The answer is D, July. The temperature of -129F was recorded in Vostok region of Antartica. I believe Vostok area is Under Russian “control.”

  16. Happy Birthday John! Glad you are enjoying YOUR day!

As far as the weather goes……YUCK!!! The boys and I damn near melted walking in the parade on Thursday. Felt bad the the bands that were in full uniforms. You would think they would have a summer uniform.

  17. Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes. A warning. Just returned from the neighbors party and had bug spray on and got eaten alive. The mosquitos even bit my back and I had a shirt on. I must have 15 welts on my back. Sue be carefull because one tested positive in whitman.

    1. John…what did you use for bug spray….I only use Deep Woods off or the industrial strength Cutter.

This has nothing to do with weather but I was wondering if anybody new how to keep these businesses from going to Silicon Valley? Last time I went to Silicon Valley it was much bigger than I thought and much more up to date and great planning of highways and roads, I would even say that just Silicon Valley alone is bigger than all of Boston, I’ve chosen to not take a negative approach but a more positive approach and just wonder why? I know of one company that wanted to expand and wanted to build bigger and people fought a bigger building so they took there 250 high paying jobs to the west coast, something I think we need to change here but anyways just some thoughts on how we keep companies here and letting them thrive while helping community on a fair level.

    1. I have been with a couple of start-ups (one that became a Wall Street darling) and we receievd a lot of venture capital funding from Silicon Valley. We werealways heavily “encouraged” to move our companies there.

    2. Without getting into this cause I really don’t want to, I think there is a danger when a person believes their area should emulate another. Every area is different and should remain so because each has advantages and disadvantages over the other. I’ve said it before and I won’t change. We are uniquely Boston and should remain so. Remember that does not mean we do not grow or change but we do so with that in mind.

      http://www.forbes.com/sites/petercohan/2013/01/29/will-boston-beat-silicon-valley-in-the-start-up-game/

      1. Great article Vicki and I agree I don’t want to get into this either (doesn’t matter if it’s presented as positive or negative). Agree with your thoughts 100%!

        1. Thanks Keith. I thought the article showed how there are different perspectives by area because of the areas uniqueness.

Is it cooler in your area? Daughter was at Humarock yesterday and said there was a lovely breeze and it was cooler

          1. It might be a tad cooler. I’m about 1 mile from the Harbor so any weak seabreeze doesn’t usually make a difference here…has to be a good back door cold front. I just got through mowing the backyard uggh..part of it slopes about 35 degrees and the cesspool is also out back so you can imagine the jungle that grows…Charlie I may look for your help in trying to decide how to make our backyard better and easier to deal with.

  19. There are a couple of Atlantic storms.
    http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

The Gulf storm is likely to produce rains for TX and LA and continue north.

I am a little surprised by the Cape Verde low. I have been watching this one for a few days and thought for sure it would fizzle but to my surprise it has gained a little strength.

  20. Truro, NS, currently 9:03am, sunny, Bay of Fundy breeze, 70F.

Sorry to see what happened in San Francisco.

    1. Tom very good to hear from you. You are in Macs ancestors area….please say hi as you drive through ;). Hope all is going as planned. When do you get your sandwich in antigonish??

  21. This was pointed out yesterday. It has increased from 30% to 40%.

    1. A STRONG TROPICAL WAVE LOCATED ABOUT 1400 MILES EAST-SOUTHEAST OF THE WINDWARD ISLANDS IS MOVING WESTWARD AT ABOUT 25 MPH. ALTHOUGH THE SHOWER AND THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY CONTINUES TO SHOW SIGNS OF ORGANIZATION…THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF A CLOSED SURFACE CIRCULATION AT THIS TIME. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO BE CONDUCIVE FOR SOME DEVELOPMENT OF THIS SYSTEM…AND IT HAS A MEDIUM CHANCE…40 PERCENT…OF BECOMING A TROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS.

And with the Ocean continuing to warm around these parts, I worry:

        DEW point is rising again!

          1. I would take that dewpoint over mine right now.

How is your wife doing with the lower dewpoint?

            1. Damage has already been done. She’s Pretty sick, doing the best she can. Thank you for asking. The dew point is on the rise again, so what ever relief there was is very short lived.

                1. Thanks Vicki. This weather Sucks!
I can handle, but my wife and both children have trouble in the heat.

For some reason, even at my advanced aged 😀
I can handle the heat as long as I remain hydrated.

                1. thanks. I’m afraid it may be quite awhile yet.

Joe Joyce indicates a break is coming on Tuesday. I don’t believe it. I don’t trust a word he says.

        1. We have seen more of them than I remember

92.5 here with 73 dP and 101 feel.

Amazing dP is 64 in Boston. Nice

              1. My youngest and family just built a fire in the fire pit to make s’mores. Where did I go wrong – sighhh

  22. I was amazed when I drove over the Sudbury river on a bridge I travel frequently. A few days ago it was still very full. Last evening it had dropped considerably. Lack of rain and evaporation??

  23. The most consecutive days of 90+ for Boston is 9 set on July 3-11, 1912.

The next consecutive days of 90+ for Boston is 8 set in 1944, 1994, and 2002.

It would not take much to tie or even break these records since temps are forecasted to be in the upper 80’s most of this upcoming week and it would only take a 2-3 degree difference on the higher side of the forecast. I remember Dick Albert would brag on air all the time about being 3-5 degrees either side of a temperature forecast.

Also btw, regarding snowfall the following winter for those years above with many days of 90+ temps…it has been either “feast” or “famine”. 😉

  24. NWS at Upton, NY talks about a good deal of convection today with pretty
    strong storms.

    Hmmm

    We’ll see.

  25. I think we have to watch for 3 potential broken lines of storms (we’ll see how they configure). For eastern MA average timing – 5PM, 8PM, 10PM. It’s the first batch I’d be most concerned about. The second batch would probably be weakening and the 3rd would probably be dissipated. Should end up as a much more humid afternoon today than yesterday was. Stuffy night tonight as compared to a slightly more comfortable last night.

  26. Thanks TK!

Things I love about summer and the heat: Everything.

Things I don’t like: I have a sunburn and a bug bite on my thumb and thigh. 😛

Hope everyone is enjoying this weather and staying hydrated!

    1. Hi Emily. I just saw your post and you probably won’t see this as its so far back. I was thinking as we were driving yesterday that looking through the heat seemed to make the sky bluer and the trees against them a more deep green. Although this heat is my least favorite weather, there is beauty in it

I use rubbing alcohol to stop bug bite itching. If they are really bad I wet my fingertip and use a bit of salt to rub the bite. It stops the itch but the best part is that it scratches the itch too 🙂

    1. TWC said winds were not west on the south side, so no closed circulation. That was earlier, looks like it has a well defined circulation to me.

        1. hmmmm

            1. With the overall pattern we are in, it’s not going to be hard to get any tropicals at least within striking range of the East Coast (not saying they will make a landfall but they will be in position to do so given the right conditions).

              1. Exactly the reason I am worried.
Not to mention the warmer than normal SSTs. It could spell BIG trouble.

Time to monitor the NHC often!

                1. Well I can tell you that many mets, myself included, are concerned about this pattern in regards to bringing a tropical cyclone to the East Coast.

  27. Geezh,

I go out to run a few errands and come home to my wife on the phone with my daughter and she says there’s a tornado warning. I say No way! Severe thunderstorm, yes, tornando, NO!!!

Whatever tornado warning there was is now DOWN. It went up because dopplar showed “some weak rotation”. Umm Don’t usually get a tornado with weak rotation.
What’s up with these guys?? Right now they’re just scaring people.

Let’s see IF any of these storms maintain intensity into Eastern MA. We shall see.

Turning out to be an interesting day.

    1. They are in “better safe than sorry” mode.

Explosive convection in a way but the individual cells are not that long-lived, at least most of them.

Feel that along and south of Route 2 is most under the gun.

      1. Tk, I know, but I think they are going over the top, almost in chicken little mode. They sure don’t want to be caught with their
pants down, but I think they went overboard. But hey, that is just I. Initial storms have weakened some already. Watching to see if there is any re-intensification.

Problem with this, is people become conditioned to yeah sure another warning and NOTHING happens. It can get dangerous.

  28. Severe T-storm warning for Worcester County has been taken down. As I said, the storm weakened.

  29. Hi, all – haven’t been around much due to husband in hospital w/an off and on high fever and hiccups? and my mother just diagnosed w/liver cancer. things really great – and I am being sarcastic.

Is this threat of severe weather going to be around all wk.?

By the way – I just have been scanning the blog lately. Hope I have everything right, if not – sorry.

John – Happy birthday (I may be a day late on that).

OS – hope your wife feels better. Sorry if I missed anyone.

And hope all had a good 4th.

    1. Rainshine,

Sorry about all of the bad news. Hope things turn out as well as possible.

    2. Thanks rainshine. You just can’t seem to catch a break, I’m very sorry. I will include you in my nightly prayers.

      1. Thanks, John. I know you love this weather – and for the months of May – August I love it too – only w/a few sunny, cool days thrown in at times. I want to enjoy this weather but w/stuff going on it’s hard – tornado warnings and me alone w/my cat – scary.

    3. Rainshine I’ve been thinking of you and wondering. I am so sorry for your news. Ill keep you and your husband and your mom in my thoughts and prayers

  30. John,

A really juicy one just to your South and just NW of Plymouth. I’m sure you see it and hear thunder.

  31. I’m right in that area. Thunder getting louder but sun trying to win the battle. It may or may not pass. Interesting.

  32. John,

There is another storm now Just South and East of Taunton. This needs to be
watched for your area as it will track farther North than the other one.

  33. Thanks OS. Daughter just getting to Uxbridge from here and is just seeing the lightening.

  34. Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Storm just east of Springfield.
Weak Rotation detected in this storm but NO tornado warning.

  35. Rainshine… Thoughts and prayers. The hiccups are intriguing in a way and making me wonder if there is not an infection somewhere that is causing pressure on the diaphragm muscle. I’m no doctor but wonder if something is going on there. Best wishes for EVERYBODY.

    1. Thanks, TK. That’s what I am wondering. They have many tests on him and all are fine. Just waiting for some results from a blood test that checks for infections. He has been in the hospital since yesterday and it started w/bad hiccups. then in the hospital they found he had a fever of 103. Fever is up and down. Hopefully, they will get the results tomorrow and it will get taken care of.

  36. Some nice news – a few wks. ago we had a great day trip to Gloucester and Rockport. I always love watching the boats in the harbor at Gloucester coming and going. Hoping before the summer is over that we can get down to Hull and browse around – my husband’s hometown.

    1. If you can, you should try to go up there on the evening of August 31 to see the lighted boat parade from the Annisquam and fireworks over Gloucester Harbor. 🙂

      1. TK I’d like to see that too. I’d forgotten you told us about it last year

Rainshine its nice to hear you had a fun trip 🙂

  37. Pouring in pembroke. It struggled but its here. Wondering if I should cancel cooking out and go with pizza.

    1. John,

The storms are lined up, 3 deep to get you. 😀 😀
You might be OK if you eat later, say 6 or 6:30. 😀

But then you never know when another storm will pop.

Maybe you should play it safe. Good luck.

      1. So your saying two more more than likely to hit is that correct. Pizza sounding better. Looks like its clearing though.

    2. Go pick up pizzas at Oliveira’s and tell Joyce I said hello. We got them from there last night. 🙂

  38. Sea Breeze has made it here. Not that it is cool, but temp dropped back to 87. 😀

  39. Crazy thunder, lightning, and rain in North Plymouth. Trying to time my trip to the grocery store for my weekly shopping between storms.

  40. Heari9ng craploads of thunder. Must be that juicy storm to our South, but it is
a fair distance South, so I’m surprised.

    1. We are hearing it here too and have been for a bit but in the distance. Must be one heck of a storm

  41. Now I know its bad. Mac loves summer in any form. He just came in from taking the dog out and said enough is enough. Even in Atlanta where he lived a few years he said it wasn’t worse.

  42. Vicki thanks for the response and I’ve seen that article, but to answer everything to we r uniquely Boston, lets open our eyes and uniquely think how much better the area could be instead of settling, I’ve never been one to settle, someone is always trying to 1 up our city and other mayors of other cities will steal our jobs, i know you dont care about jobs, i know you would rather cintinue to send jobs to all the other states than to have jobs come here and increase traffic or block the sun for 22 min’s, ive said before and ill say it again New Englanders r selfish in alota ways 🙁 you say Boston is a national city but everything around Boston holds back the city and the city constantly puts unwanted pressure on every town out to 495 and that’s good, and all new Englanders are not you, they want to be able to go to that franchise restaurant and not go to a place on a Friday to find out its closes for 2 weeks, Vicki hope all is well, all new Englanders don’t just want charm all the time or museums, we could of had NASA built here but the people fought it, can u imagine? Wow what could have been to only

    1. Some rain here about 90 minutes ago…nothing much but the air feels stickier than it did before.

      1. I just went on the porch to have dinner. The temp dropped so I figured it’d be nice. Its the first night I’ve turned right around to come back inside. Its thick as soup

    1. Early call:
Thursday: Mostly cloudy – numerous showers/storms.
Friday: Variably cloudy – scattered showers/storms.
Saturday: Partly cloudy – isolated showers/storms.
Daily highs around 80, overnight lows around 60.

    1. It was actually introducing more humidity after the 10 degree dewpoint drop yesterday. Back to the soup!

        1. Showers/storms redevelop tomorrow, maybe rather numerous especially later day into evening. Activity only isolated Tuesday – probably the pick of the work week. Still humid and rather warm though, but the heatwave kind of heat will be gone for several days.

The Week Ahead is now posted!

    1. No big surprise given how much spin it was carrying it before they even called it a depression.
