  1. TK, hope you have a good day at the Lagoon!!

Again I think BB put the temp at 93 today and there is a heat warning up.

  2. Happy 4th to all !!

Not even 9am and its already nasty out there. I sure hope all the folks, who get to the Esplanade at a very early hour to grab a prime spot, are going with a large supply of water and will have the ability to create shade. I hope I’m wrong, but I think there may be heat related health issues for some who may be unprepared. Its one thing for it to be hot, its also one thing for it to be oppressively humid, but today and tomorrow are a combination of both.

    1. Mac and I were talking about that, Tom. Especially with the restrictions on what people are allowed to carry.

      1. I had a glance at those restrictions and I understand them given the tragic events at the Marathon. But, I think people cant bring in backpacks or rolling coolers, so I wonder how many drinks one person could carry in.

Its almost like a perfect storm for heat related issues. Heat advisories, perhaps those are hoisted 1-3 times a summer locally and because of a past event, it may be difficult for people to bring in the necessary things to stay cool.

        1. Tom you are right and you said exactly what we said since carry ins like backpacks and cooler size are now limited.

  3. Thanks TK.
I hope everyone has a great fourth of July. I am looking forward to getting together with my family for a nice cookout, playing a game of bochie, and watching fireworks.
Were going to add the heat to mugginess over the coming days. Any thunderstorm that pops today will be non severe.

  4. Logan at 10am …. 86F, dewpoint 71F …. Heat index : 91F, and at least in Marshfield, barely a cloud.

Logan’s been rising 3F per hour since 7am.

    1. Happy 4th. Same here tom all Sun. I left for the gym at 8am this morning and it was very humid than. Going to be a hot few days.

    2. Scary, isn’t it?

Look at the dew point! Outrageous!

      Temperature: 86.0 °F (30.0 °C)
      Dewpoint: 71.1 °F (21.7 °C)

        1. Using 12Z NAM projected 850MB temperatures which
are projected to be 18+ C (64.4F+) from 1PM through 4PM, then using the cheat method of adding 27.5F to the 850MB temp in F yiellds 92+.

Forecast high of 93 looks to be right in line, however, if
          850Temp is 19 C or 20C, then it could go to 94 or 95.

I’m thinking Logan comes in at 95 today.

  5. Just took a 4 mile walk. WOW! Had toshower forever.

Lots of Esplanade regs today. No backpacks, no coolers on wheels, maximum size of a plastic bottle is 2 liters, everything must be in clear plastic bags, no stampeding to pick out your spot.

    Much, much law enforcement around.

  6. Hmmmmm

    Weather: A Few Clouds
    Temperature: 88.0 °F (31.1 °C)
    Dewpoint: 71.1 °F (21.7 °C)
    Relative Humidity: 57 %

WEST wind! If that stays, then it can introduce a down sloping effect, perhaps
raising the high temperature a tad more. 😀

  7. Heat advisory has been expanded a little bit.
If there was a shortwave coming through with the CAPE values this high I would be concerned for the POTENTIAL for some nasty storms but since there is no trigger I am not that concerned however I am still keeping an eye on it just in case something were to pop.

    1. Agree totally.

Atmosphere will be cooking today, so something could pop. We shall see.

      Brutal out there.

      1. So far this summer its been muggy everyday. Now were adding the heat. Dew Points here in CT all in the 70s including
a 76 degree dewpoint in Groton. This has the feel of Florida. I don’t see this mugginess going away anytime soon the fans and AC’s are going to continue to get a workout.

  8. I remember back in August 2003 being affected by that power outage that affected NYC and parts of the Northeast. It was a hot day and it was not pleasant. Some of these power grids are old and a lot of people running the AC with it being so warm puts a strain on those grids.

Now back to SW wind. Heat Index already 97!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  9. Happy 4th everyone! IIRC, we have had a lot of past july 4th holidays with HHH weather. Just too a peek at the national radar and u can clearly see the ridge backed way far west into the southeast US. Very strange setup. Stay safe and hydrated out there. Thanks for all the bday wishes yesterday, I had a great day! Even though I am no longer in my 20s, booo.

  10. From NWS upton:

SFC BASED CAPE IS BUILDING…AND 2-3K J/KG LOOKS LIKELY.
MAIN LIMITING FACTOR WILL BE THE LACK OF A TRIGGER AND THE
INCREASING SUBSIDENCE. BECAUSE THE CWA IS RIGHT AT THE EDGE OF THE RING OF FIRE…MAINTAINED ISOLD CHCS ACROSS THE INTERIOR THIS AFTN THRU ABOUT 8PM. THE PROB IS LOW OF ANYTHING DEVELOPING…HOWEVER IF A CELL DOES POP…A BRN OVER 100 INDICATES PULSE ACTIVITY. IN ADDITION…THERE WILL BE A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF DCAPE LYING AROUND TODAY. IF A CELL CAN REACH THE EL OF AROUND 45K FT…STRONG DOWNBURSTS COULD OCCUR.

    1. BRN shear = Bulk Richardson Number shear term (the denominator of the BRN). BRN shear is similar to the BL – 6 km shear, except that BRN shear uses a difference between the low level wind and a density-weighted mean wind through the mid levels. Values of 35-40 m2s-2 or greater have been associated with supercells.

      Another definition:

Bulk Richardson Number (or BRN) – A non-dimensional number relating vertical stability and vertical shear (generally, stability divided by shear). High values indicate unstable and/or weakly-sheared environments; low values indicate weak instability and/or strong vertical shear. Generally, values in the range of around 50 to 100 suggest environmental conditions favorable for supercell development.

  11. Daughter was showing in Farmington ct on 4th in around. 2000. Temp was 102. Her trainer had a fit when she refused to let her horse show.

2002 was also extreme heat IIRC over 4th

    1. Yes, but that area is N&W of the immediate Boston area.

We’ll see, but I’m guessing not much if anything develops. 😀

  13. IIRC July 4, 2009 was almost “too” cool then temps heated up (relatively speaking) from mid-July though mid-August and heated back up briefly in September. There were only four 90+ days but still a number of “uncomfortable” days in terms of humidity.

    1. Ill have to think about that…..can it be too cool in the summer. Interesting concept 😉

    1. 1PM Bost Obs.
Stayed at 90. I am really surprised. My 95 now NOT looking good at all. 😀 😀

    2. What’s the average for a year? something like 12, I think. I remember a number of years ago it was 30!

      1. That sounds about right. For some reason, I seem to remember someone describing that avg as 10-14 days per summer.

Gusting to 20 from the SW. Umm don’t know what I was thinking regarding
a seabreeze!! Wind was MUCH lighter earlier, perhaps that was what I was thinking???

  14. 93 in Newton Lower Falls; probably feels over 100 out there.

Going to an outdoor family BBQ at 4; I hope we eat inside!

    1. We are heading to a friend’s at 4 for a BBQ. Luckily they have a pool! I hate the humidity!

  15. From NWS at Taunton:

***EXCESSIVE HEAT AND HUMIDITY CONTINUE INTO THE EARLY EVENING***

PARTLY SUNNY SKIES ALONG WITH HOT AND HUMID WEATHER WILL CONTINUE. HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL TOP OUT IN THE LOWER TO MIDDLE 90S IN MOST LOCALES AWAY FROM THE SOUTH COAST/CAPE/ISLANDS.

  16. Enjoying a cookout, about 60 people showed up, wow!! Didn’t think that many would show up, but I got a 78 inch tv projecter screen high def with the 2004 superbowl on with all the commercials, lots of fun!! Hope everyone has a great day!!

  17. 93F at 3pm : Logan.

12z EURO, while there might be some relief days 7 or 8, looks like there’s a signal to reestablish a new western Atlantic ridge days 9-10.

    1. And it looks like that is the High. 😀
I suppose between obs it could have snuck up to 94. We’ll know soon. 😀

  18. Please say it ain’t so!! PLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZE!

    1. We barely broke 90 and are hovering there. But our dP is up to 75

Im trying to imagine what 130 feels like. We went to Spokane about 20 yrs ago (darn it feels like yesterday and gives me chills when I say 20 years). They typically don’t have really hot spells. It was consistently around 115 – and dropped very little at night. We were sitting on the porch one night trying to take advantage of a little breeze and everything got sort of blurry. Come to find out it was a dust storm. We had no idea

      1. Closest I’ve been to that was 108 in Las Vegas. I thought that
was bad. Dry heat, my Arse!!!! When it’s that hot, it’s hot, period.

        1. Mac has a cousin in Phoenix and one in Tucson. They said when someone says dry heat they say the same as you OS…dry heat my arse

  19. Cold 20 degrees and snow or hot 90 degrees and rain, which would you prefer if you could only have 1 all year everyday of every year?

  20. I am a huge fan of John Adams. Not so much Jefferson. Adams wrote to wife Abigail when the Declaration of Independence had been signed that this was a day to be celebrated with pomp and circumstance for generations to come. He was an amazingly far sighted man. Almost to the point of being surreal. Fitting that he died listening to fireworks in the town outside his window. But he wasn’t the only one as I suspect many here know

    http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/thomas-jefferson-and-john-adams-die

      1. It was good. Among others I also enjoyed McCoullogs book. I’ve read it three times and think I’m ready for #4. Anyone interested in rev war history, the fireplace in Brookline has fireside chats in early months of the year with period food/drink and lectures/discussions.

    1. At least…even Wednesday is expected to be in the upper 80’s. With sunshine 90 or higher is still possible. AFAIC 88 or 91 doesn’t make much difference in terms of comfort…UGH!

      1. Philip I know your not a big fan of the heat and I’m hoping you find some relief. I just love summer, always have so the hotter the better as far as I’m concerned. I’m looking forward to the weekend being warm. I report to work at 3am for a 12 hr shift and than I’m off till Wednesday. I went in my pool today for the first time believe it or not. Looking forward to doing the same as today for four days, nothing. Take care Philip and stay cool.

  21. I almost considered BBQing with the George Forman grill since it was so hot to be outside, but decided in the end to BBQ outdoors as usual. The Forman grill cooks just as good as the traditional grill but the GF is a pain to clean up. I enjoy cooking outdoors anyway so I am glad I made the right decision. The steaks came out very nice and tender.

Just curious…does anyone else have those GF grills? I actually have 3 of them. 😉

    1. We had one years ago but it was such a pain to clean we gave up. We cook outside year round. We did tonight as well. Great steak and veggies. Very glad you enjoyed

  22. I remember every celebration on the esplanade although unlike TK I have not been there. I thought there would not be one that moved me as much as the one in 1976. Well this years has topped all IMHO. What a wonderful feeling of Boston and the strength we had centuries ago.

  23. boston pops always gives us a show and this years was even better. i think it was better with out the big time celebrities. featured the band more. the fireworks were even better. the bridge was not closed due to security reasons, it was do to the fact that they launched fireworks from the bridge.

    1. Bc everyone disagrees nothing will get done, so when it’s to late to do something is when everyone will agree, it’s kinda like the state telling me I can’t use fireworks, but it’s ok to use a chainsaw or a knife, then they use a dummy to explain what fireworks do to a human, they need to stop treating us like a bunch of dummy’s , good day all

      1. Hehehehe. Your comment first said we are dummy enough not to agree until its too late and then they need to stop treating us like the dummies you said we are. I’m doubled over here Charlie. I don’t think that’s what you intended at all but it just struck me as funny

BTW I didnt say the water was warming for any reason other than they are simply warmer 😀

  24. The dew point continues to be in that oppressive range and were not getting rid of the mugginess for the next 7 days.
The AC’s and fans will continue to get a workout.

  25. Tim Horton’s, 20 miles north of Augusta, ME …. Still hot ! 🙂

    Enjoy the day everyone.

    1. Enjoy your trip. I am once again envious. I was telling my kids and you might want to peak in your camper as you may have stowaways 🙂

WOW! What A stinker out there!!

    95+? I think so.

    High was 94 yesterday. 😀

    1. I can’t wait to get out of here, pool for four days is all I’m thinking about. Hot one in the city today.

  27. From BB this morning:

Barry Burbank, Beyond The Forecast, Blogs

After Wednesday’s 91 and yesterday’s 94, today’s predicted 96 degrees will make it Boston’s second heat wave of the year.

  28. From NWS at Taunton:

MAY EVEN SEE A FEW SPOTS REACH 96 OR 97 DEGREES GIVEN MORE WESTERLY SURFACE WINDS AND LESS CLOUDS THAN YESTERDAY.

      1. Tell that to folks who don’t have AC. You guys have pools and AC I have a friend who works in a manufacturing plant with no AC and he doesn’t have AC at home. He’s one of many. Even I recognize that it can be both too hot and too cold

        1. Not saying its too hot for me as I have options. Just that it is dangerously hot for those who do not

        2. I’ve been outside working in the heat since 3am this morning, my clothes sticking like glue and this is all summer. And I’m still not complaining. I love summer. And I probably wont even swim today. Yesterday was my first time in the pool and its been open since memorial weekend. The first thing I do when I get is have a hot coffee.

          1. John that’s great. Im enjoying the weather also. Unfortunately not everyone can tolerate extremes and not everyone has a pool and AC to go home to. It is was it is as we have no control. Doesn’t keep me from worrying about potential results.

            1. Agree. But for people that don’t have aciI’m not sure why they don’t. But there is plenty of ways for them to stay cool. Even though I have a pool I probably don’t even hit ten times going in per season. I grew up on the beach, way different. I just hate winter and every louzy thing that comes with it. The only good part is the holidays.

              1. Not everyone can afford AC John. Or the bills that accompany it. As it is, we alternate ours to keep the electric bill down. Also you are forgetting health issues. I’m sorry you don’t like winter. I feel as if we are lucky to have a wonderful diversity. Enjoy your days off and the pool.

                1. You seem to be taking this personal. Not sure why. Take care. I also do the same with my ac. Sometimes shutting it down at night and using ceiling fans.

                2. How am I taking anything personal? Now I’m confused. Oh well as I said enjoy your four days

                3. For heaven sakes hydrate. When you feel thirsty you are already on your way to dehydration. Although since you work at one of the best hospitals in the world I suspect I’m preaching to the choir 🙂

                4. Hehe. Tx. That’s where the other comments were coming from but its easy to misinterpret typed words. And I’m not always that good….I can be quite devilish 🙂

  29. i guess im the strange one. i love the summer heat and i love the snow and cold of winter. there advantages to both ….. though my pool feels like the water at st johns.

    1. I love the cold and the snow but not the heat and humidity. I do like warm weather but I can’t stand it when dew points
are this high. So far this summer we have not gotten a break from the mugginess.

  30. 91.8 with a 75 dP and 103 heat index

Longshot not sure if you are around. We were in your area at The Local for lunch as I had a groupon. It was very good.

  31. Hello everyone,

I hope summer is going well!

I have a question. I’m planning on taking a trip to Rome & Medjugorje in February and I want to know what I can expect for weather. Anyone have an idea?

    Thank you,
    TJ

    1. Husband lives in Rome for years and said the weather can swing. He thought best range for Rome would be night/day….30s/50s. And cooler north as it can snow there. He also said they would sail into feb but it can me a rainier period.

        1. Sure. Someone else might have more to offer. He hasn’t lived there for several decades. Enjoy. What a beautiful country !

      1. Pretty much what mac said..he also said the rain totals are misleading as its more drizzly/cold/damp. BUT its not like London. It can rain one week and be spectacular another. I’m hoping TJ gets a great week.

  32. 94 At the airport. Did it sneak to 95?

out and about this PM. Car thermometer topped out at 101. he he
Usually runs a few degrees high in this weather due to hot roads etc.

    1. Anyone know?
Dwon to 93 at 5PM. Was 94 at 2,3 and 4 PM, so it could have snuck up to
      95 somewhere in there.

  33. I have noticed that in spite of being clearly in a HHH pattern, the “haze” has been missing for the most part. The skies have been quite blue with a few of those fair wx type clouds. If the humidity levels would drop 10 or so degrees, we could actually be experiencing a nice row of top 10 days.

I guess we can call this more of an HH (hot & humid) pattern…still feels like UGH!

  34. Thanks again Vicki & OS. Looking forward to Going to Europe I have never been. Maybe a little global warming can kick in for the week in February over there and bump up those temps.

  35. As you all know I love this weather but man was it hot today, still is. Remember your pets. Give the dogs if you have them ice cubes. Hang in there everybody.

    1. And your elderly neighbors. Our window ACs had a tough time keeping up for the first time.

        1. I’m wondering how this might lead to brown outs as someone wisely mentioned here the other day

And John we were just watching our dog lick the remains of an ice cream cup. He asked me to thank you for remembering him 😉

  36. It’s tough for Boston to attract big free agent hockey players and big free agent basketball players, in the nba everyone wants to play for LA,Miami or anywhere warm, and in the NHL for some reason Chicago Detroit and cities in Canada get the big names, now I know it can happen but the percentage is most would rather go elsewhere. I just heard 1 of ourBruins wanted to go where there’s less media and less stressful, and he’s only 21 yrs old, any input?

  37. TK…I know this is July, but is there ANY breakdown of this current UGH! pattern? The tv mets have been hinting that the heat should break down late next week but the humidity will still be with us for the forseeable future.

    UGH! 🙁

    1. Yes and no. * Yes in that the ridge weakens and disturbances press in over the top of it, and push it back a bit to the west while it also rebuilds in the western Atlantic. That leaves us in a temporary mean trough position later next week. * No, in that we probably hold onto the humidity and increase the shower and thunderstorm activity for at least a few days.

  38. Hope everyone’s doing OK and able to find some coolness during this heatwave. Stay safe and have a great weekend 🙂

  39. The last 2 days have been nonstop but very good for me. Survived a day in the heat out at the Esplanade for July 4th, and a day at Hampton Beach Friday. In the end, I probably sweat off 10 pounds but stayed very hydrated and in decent shape. After the 2 days, I only have some moderate sunburn on my head/face/neck/shoulders (I don’t burn that badly). Sunscreen worked well but hard to keep it on when you keep sweating it off.

This weekend will be a little more low-key but still going to a big bbq in Middleton late afternoon Saturday and a big fireworks display in Wilmington Saturday night. We run a slightly higher risk of isolated to scattered storms Saturday and Sunday afternoon/evening but again most places won’t see them.

Different pattern next week, to be explained in a forthcoming blog update…

Have a great July 4th Weekend everybody. Be safe and stay cool if you can!

  40. To expand a bit on what Matt said about the Pops & Fireworks….

Excellent show. I think in a way it is a shame that CBS dropped the broadcast. I bet they are kicking themselves given how much attention has been on the city of Boston. But hey, that’s the business part of it, right?

The local talent was just fine. Having the big name stars there is fun and all, but we don’t need them to have the biggest party in America. And the best fireworks display. As many of you know, I’m a pyromaniac. I go to so many fireworks display that sometimes I lose count. This year, Atlas Pyrovision Productions put on the fireworks show for Boston. They are one of the larger fireworks companies, and they are based out of Jaffrey NH. I’ve communicated with some of the workers there and they are very pleasant to talk to. I’ve actually considered becoming a pyro technician. They hold classes and hire people through Atlas (and other companies too of course). Who knows, maybe some day I’ll be shooting the Boston show, not just watching it. 😉

Anyway, Atlas puts on many of the bigger displays around New England, including a big one in Manchester NH Memorial Day Weekend and Newburyport for the Yankee Doodle week (this year the display is August 3). Atlas won the Montreal fireworks competition last year. They also have done their own show (Festival of Fireworks) in Jaffrey for several years until a terrorist threat canceled the show last year and forced it to be ended at the location it was at. But they are now exploring options to find a new location and tighten up security so that the festival can return, hopefully 2014.

    A. January

    1. D – July, Antarctica, Without looking it up, not sure of the temperature, but I’d say something like -90F. 😀 Let’s see HOW wrong I am. 😀

      1. I would venture to guess even colder than that by converting farenheit to celcius 😀

    1. JJ if Antarctica, no way in January as that would be SUMMER there.
It would have to be July. 😀
