Thursday Forecast Update

2:22AM

DAYS 1-5 (SEPTEMBER 10-14)…
A bit of weather action during this period, but we will squeeze a nice day or 2 in as well. A slow-moving cold front is settling into coastal southeastern New England this morning and will hang around as a wave of low pressure forms on it to the south of New England and then moves north northeastward through Friday. This system will supply fairly significant rainfall for a good portion of the region on the order of 1 to 2 inches with locally heavier amounts possible. Though it is impossible to pinpoint the location and timing of the heaviest rainfall at the time of the writing of this blog, we can track it in the comments section below. It does seem most likely that the best chance for heavier activity will be from Thursday evening through early Friday morning. Of course there will be particular attention paid to the weather in Foxboro MA as the Patriots host the Steelers in the season opener, along with the banner ceremony for last season’s Super Bowl victory. Some downpours may very possibly impact the ceremony and the game. Drier air will move in during Friday afternoon and into Saturday, but another trough will approach from the west, igniting a second low pressure wave on the frontal system still near the Northeast and Mid Atlantic coast, and this will likely deliver more showers to the region by Sunday, departing Monday.
TODAY: Mainly cloudy. Isolated to scattered showers and a slight chance of downpours/thunderstorms. Muggy. Highs in the 70s. Wind variable becoming mostly NE to E around 10 MPH.
TONIGHT: Cloudy. Areas of fog. Showers likely including downpours and a chance of thunderstorms. Humid. Lows in the 60s. Wind E to NE 5-15 MPH.
FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy morning with showers tapering off west to east. Partly sunny in the afternoon. Slowly lowering humidity. Highs in the 70s. Wind NE to N 5-15 MPH.
SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Lows middle 50s to lower 60s. Highs middle 70s to lower 80s.
SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy. Episodes of showers. Lows in the 60s. Highs in the 70s.
MONDAY: Variably cloudy. Isolated showers. Lows upper 50s to lower 60s. Highs in the 70s.

DAYS 6-10 (SEPTEMBER 15-19)…
Other than a weak disturbance possibly causing a few showers later in the period, it looks like we’ll be dominated by high pressure and temperatures generally above normal for the middle of September.

DAYS 11-15 (SEPTEMBER 20-24)…
Still not seeing any major pattern changes with generally warmer and drier than normal conditions as high pressure remains the dominant player. Will have to watch for a couple disturbances from the southwest as the jet stream will be nearby. There may also be a disturbance in the western Atlantic to keep an eye on, but this is far from certain.

  1. Lightning strikes over eastern Long Island Sound with a storm looking like it’s heading to southern Rhode Island and SE Mass.

      1. I’m perfectly fine with 8:30.

Game gets over around 11:30, Midnight tops and I’m in bed
        normal time. No problems.

    1. JJ. Do you know If there is any sort of golf today and tomorrow. Mac resting from a very small procedure today and then another tomorrow and I’m fsiling miserably at finding something. I know fedex BMW comes back in to weeks but thought maybe something was on…thanks

And back to weather. 72 with a 67 DP. Cloudy but no rain in Milford

      1. If you have the Golf Channel, is is pretty much 24 / 7 golf tournaments. European, Web.com, Champions Tour, etc. You can learn about all the other golf tournaments!!!

  2. Thanks TK….continued prayers for you and your family.

Just had a brief downpour in Plymouth. I am on a conference call and heard the rain on the roof and suddenly realized my car windows were down. Thank God for leather seats!

  3. Thank you, TK.

I welcome the rain and a break from feeling like I’m in the tropical hub of the universe.

And last but not least, Go Patriots!

  4. Hi Vicki…. I hope Mac is feeling alright. There is no PGA golf tournament this week. The BMW Championship will start next Thursday and the following week is Tour Championship.

    1. Thanks JJ. He was hoping something in between would be on. Not good timing but there is always the golf, channel :). He is doing well. Just had a port put in as they are running out of places to put needles for chemo. It was expected and he did great 🙂

  5. Light, very intermittent rain with huge drops between Milford and home. It smells like a rainy summer day at the beach. The rain feels and sounds great.

  6. Thanks Tk 🙂 I hope things are going well 🙂

Been lightly raining since 7am, could be some flooding later this evening

  7. So far, I don’t see anything even remotely impressive looking. I know it’s early.
Eric last night thought that there was a chance the whole game tonight could
be basically DRY. Let us hope so. He really thought the worst of it might
end up Midnight into Friday AM.

    1. Looking at some futurecasts (I know i know, these are rarely accurate) but it looks to me areas from Foxboro to Boston escape the heavy stuff. Areas that have been pouring this morning down toward Plymouth and the Cape and then into the CT river valley will get the heavier rains.

      1. And a slow rain at that. IF we do get 2-3″ of rain between today and tomorrow, it will likely come down heavy. With the dry ground, most of the rain will run right off

    1. Seems to be the happening place today. Wunder has New Bedford at 1.19 inches so far but not sure how often that updates. I can’t find a reading for Plymouth. The few Wunder stations I checked had almost no rain and we know from Sue that is not accurate.

  8. We are going to stop early today, it’s becoming a little muddy, don’t want to ruin the lawns. We will finish about 1pm 🙂

      1. Seekonk rohoboth Attleboro Norton area, we just got a downpour that soaked everything, even saw lightening and heard thunder

  9. Once again the rain/snow belt looks to be the South Shore.

Vicki, I wish Mac well. It must be draining to have to go through what he endures. It’s wonderful he has you to lean on, as you seem to be the perfect support person.

TK, I wish you well with the remaining time with your father.

  10. Geez the rain is coming down fairly hard, 2/3rds done with this property, it looks like the rain developing right over us lol

  11. Sun is partially out in Sudbury, now. For some reason, a lot of birds are all over our yard and the neighborhood. I think they like the little amount of rain we got earlier and maybe sticking around for the potential rain later!

I just wish it wouldn’t rain that much tonight – Go Pats! Hoping they can get the whole game in, no matter how long it takes.

  12. At umb doing some homework and I am out by the water, nice sea breeze coming on in off the harbor nothing can beat that salty sea air

  13. No One has said anything, but where the bleep did the East wind come from?????
I went home for lunch. SW when I went in. 1/2 hour later I came out to a pretty
    decent EAST wind.

    1. Hmmm

Been a NE wind at logan since 8AM this morning. WOW! I did not know that.

That batch of heavy rain on Long Island and Southern CT, looks to come
right over Foxboro and the Boston area. Perhaps it will be out of
      Foxboro by game time???????

  14. Let’s hope there’s no lightning delay to start or during the game tonight. That’s all we need is a 10:45 pm kickoff! The game will be in the fourth quarter when I get up tomorrow!!!
I just checked NCAA football protocol for lightning delays. If there is a lightning strike six miles or less of the stadium, the game must stop and the field cleared. The game can resume after 30 minutes after the last lightning strike that is at least six miles from the field. I would assume that the players would have to restretch and warm-up at the point. I assume that the NFL lightning delay might be very similar. I know first-hand that Little League baseball has to wait 30 minutes from the last lightning strike before the game can resume.
Could make for a long night.
If there is a lightning delay, I am sure someone somewhere will blame Tom Brady.
    Go Pats!

    1. Hahahaha. Yes they will blame Brady

I’m also hoping we do not have lightening here since we turn off TVs etc. But you are right, if there is a delay I may never make it through the game.

  15. I’m not sure I’ve seen it this crazy down here in foxboro 6 hours before game, 10’s of 1,000’s are tailgating already, wow!!

  16. TK: sending comforting thoughts to you and your family. I just read yesterday’s blog and am so sad and sorry about your dad. Much love to you and your family.

      1. Hadi, have you been thinking what I have been thinking?
An anomalous El Nino Winter? Cold shots from Eastern
Canada in place for moisture laden el nino coastal storms????

I like your thinking. I’ll fell better about it come late October
when I see Siberia buried in snow. 😀

I have not made a prediction yet and won’t until the end of
        October.

  17. I happened to being watching the part of the Red Sox game when Kevin Lemanowicz was in the booth. He said besides the El Nino there are other circulations around the globe that need to be looked at. I know the snowlovers like me hope the Almanac is right.

  18. Flash Food Watch for 3-6 inches of rain.

JPD I am thinking that as well. Shots of cold air and copious amounts of QPF due to el-Nino equals a ton of snow. It’s all about timing though. The GOM will be open for business too as it’s been closed for business recently :). We will get storms coming in from the pacific and then slide south tapping GOM moisture and then riding up the jet stream at us. I wouldn’t be totally shocked if equal last year just over s longer period of time. But I am not issuing any forecast yet, too soon.

  19. I’m a little concerned that more heavy rain forms behind that initial area and that it may contain lightning. We’ll see if there is a direct impact on the game.

On the negative side, a whole bunch of rain in a few hours is not even close to as beneficial as a good moderate soaking over 2 days. 75% of it will run right off into the storm drains and end up in the ocean.

  20. Again thank you everybody for your thoughts, prayers, and support. Dad is going to be kept at the hospital as they have their own hospice section for when his condition deteriorates. So far things have been stable. He won’t get better, but he’s holding about the same as they keep him comfortable and basically asleep the entire time. There will be no pain and we are very thankful for that. 🙂

    1. He is amazingly strong, TK. They are wonderful about making sure there is no pain. How is your mom? How are you ?

      1. We are both doing fine. A little tired but no surprise there.

My 2 brothers both from Woburn have been spending a lot of time with her when I can’t. However one of them is on his way to the Pats game as we speak. May be a tad wet when he gets there.

  21. re: What the big sign should say tonight.

IF and I do say IF Charlies in correct, very very very lame indeed.

I can think of some great ones well deserving for the NFL, but I’d
be kicked off of the blog for sharing.

  22. Yeah it’s rare they stop a football game in the NFL. They basically have to have a severe t warning, this is not baseball 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

There are a lot of breaks in the precip, there is a lot of lulls in the precip to this point. I’d guess .50-.75 has fallen thus far. Just a guess. 🙂

    1. One big reason that baseball games can be called for various weather conditions is that the games can be made up fairly easily. Football games are only played once a week (bunch of wimps…baseball players play almost every day) LOL 😉

      1. Now now I didn’t say wimps, but i will say, and Lou merloni has even said physically there’s no comparison 🙂

        1. It was a joke Charlie….both are athletes and each have their own merit. A bit of advice from FB friend…most here are football fans…some if not most are baseball fans, hockey fans and basketball fans. Promoting the sport you like is fine but overdoing it to the point of putting down other sports and the people who are fans does nothing to advance your position. 🙂

    1. I can take 70’s and 80’s so I say let it continue. More rain Sunday though, maybe another half inch of rain. We shall see 🙂

  23. We got meteorologist Fred Campagna at WTNH. He worked up in Boston and Rhode Island. What do you think of him and hopefully he is a great addition to the weather department at WTNH

  24. Entrance good, actual game has been anticlimactic so far. What’s up with the Steelers getting the Pats radio broadcast in their headsets?? LOL good grief!

      1. I’m haven’t been expecting big things this game although will be delighted if they pull it off. Too many distractions leading up

        1. Oh and I’m not showing lack of faith. I just think they have had a lot and are human so am happy just seeing them on the field

And pats coach to coach headsets were shut off during the problem. No harm, no foul

  25. Looking good so far.

    Edelman and Gronk are fantastic.
Dion Lewis looks like a find.
Malcom Butler looking like he will be really good. Had some great coverage, but
    also blew some coverage.

    Brady is on fire!!

    1. I cannot imagine how he does it. It sure is testament to the tremendous athlete that he is. I’ve seen a few others like him in my lifetime but only a few.

  26. Everything I encountered so far tonight presented no surprises…

    Weather: Behaving about as expected.
    Patriots: Behaving about as expected.
Dad: Behaving about as expected. He is stable and resting. He is now officially in hospice care in which he will just be kept comfortable for whatever time he has left. But we are finding solace knowing he is comfortable and seeing the great staff taking care of him. 🙂

    1. So glad your dad is settled in a facility he knows and where you can all talk to him. He will love hearing your voices and knowing you are there. Hugs, thoughts and prayers in this very difficult time

    2. Take care TK. Please don’t worry about the blog. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family through this difficult time. I’m glad your dad is comfortable in the hands of hospice now. It’s a difficult thing for people to understand sometimes but stay strong and enjoy your time with him.
