Sunday Forecast

8:18AM

DAYS 1-5 (DECEMBER 18-22)
The mild air is in…for a few hours…but will be pushed back out by a strong cold front crossing the region today. Before that, melting snow/ice will occur rapidly and rain showers will be numerous, first to the northwest of Boston, then progressing to the southeast with time. Thunder will accompany the rain showers in some locations. By tonight, the rain will be gone, but the temperature will take a dive, falling up to 40 degrees from the midday highs. That puts us back in the cold for tomorrow and Tuesday, though it will moderate later Tuesday. Further moderation is expected for midweek and the next storm system that approaches Thursday will likely feature more rain than snow, but this one is far enough out there and cold air not that far away so that a shift in the track of the system could introduce a better chance of snow to parts of the region.
TODAY: Mainly cloudy. Numerous rain showers from northwest to southeast across the region including the chance of thunderstorms. Patchy fog. Highs 51-59 except 40s in some deeper valleys. Wind SW 5-15 MPH with higher gusts.
TONIGHT: Clearing. Lows 13-20. Wind W 10-20 MPH with higher gusts. Rapid freezing of any wet surfaces and remaining snow cover.
MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 20-28. Wind NW 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.
TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows 3-12. Highs 28-36.
WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows 13-21. Highs 38-45.
THURSDAY: Clouding up. Chance of rain/mix/snow later. Lows 22-30. Highs 38-45.

DAYS 6-10 (DECEMBER 23-27)
Rain/mix/snow possibly early December 23. Fair weather expected for December 24. Chance of some snow/mix/rain December 25. Some additional unsettled weather possible later in the period. Temperatures near to above normal.

DAYS 11-15 (DECEMBER 28-JANUARY 1)
A milder pattern with a couple storm threats favoring rain/mix over snow, but too early to be confident on details.

  1. Thank you, TK.

51.4. 46 DP. What a difference a day makes. Great forecast, TK. Right down to thunder this am.

  2. Thanks TK! Out most of day yesterday but really enjoyed the snow! We got a little over 4inches here in Quincy. Was fun to track and see. Now on to the next system Thursday into Friday how will this evolve?

  3. Thanks TK.

The 6z GFS is pretty much a miss with the Thursday/Friday storm while the 0z Euro has a mostly rain event ending as a bit of snow with an inch or less of accumulation in western MA and CT. Hopefully we can squeeze a few inches out of this at the end…that would be enough to get us a white Xmas. The system on the 26-27th is warm on the Euro as well.

  4. Models are going to have trouble with timing and placement in the very fast-moving pattern as they have been all along.

Don’t rule out some kind of mix/snow for a portion for a portion of the region with the later Thursday / early Friday system.

Don’t rule out some kind of frozen precipitation on the Christmas itself either.

  5. Good afternoon. I have been running around like crazy.
Waiting for the Euro to complete.

Euro has a Western Lakes Cutter for Christmas Day. My favorite kind of storm system.
    NOT!

    1. The Euro’s actually showing that for December 26. For Christmas Day it has a seasonable to slightly mild day with fair weather, whereas the GFS and Canadian have other ideas for Christmas as of the 12z runs.

      1. Yes I was loioking at 0Z 12/15 which tehcnically is 7PM
Christmas Day. 😀 And it was actually centered in Iowa
at that time and not quite to the Lakes. I was making a point.

  6. TK how has the Canadian been performing? I know it’s not a great model by any means but has been showing a storm on the 23rd for the last few runs. Thanks TJ

  7. It sure felt warm out today. Most of the snow is gone here. It’s funny how warm mid 50s feels this time of year, especially on the heels of the unseasonable cold we’ve been dealing with.

As our friend Joe Bastardi has put it, any snow in the East through 1/15 will be “more luck than pattern.”

I agree, but I also thought to myself, we’ve had the right pattern in place for 2+ weeks without much to show for it. So maybe luck will serve us better 🙂

  8. Cold front charging into eastern MA now. Some pretty powerful wind gusts with this one. Trees down in Nashua NH.

Temp drops from 50s to 30s over a very short distance as the front goes by. The fall will continue more slowly after that into the 20s and eventually 10s later tonight.

  9. Front coming through now in Sudbury – very dark and wind gusting to about 45 maybe 50 mph. Almost looks like a summer storm. Kind of neat looking sky! I love New England and its changeable weather!

  10. Thanks TK. JP don’t worry Euro will come around. I have my hopes for Thursday and I believe things will begin to trend colder.

      1. Wow! Thanks, TK. Amazing video, especially from 1981. I wonder what type of equipment they used. I don’t even know if doppler was around. I do get the “debris, debris!” part though! Thanks again!

  11. today really did a number on the snow that’s for sure. I’ve got ~2″ left. Bare spots under the pines.

  12. For a good portion of the day I was outside it was warm even saw some sun. then the front moved through. Clouds, gusty winds and cooler air

    1. I am good friends with a married couple in which the husband is a Giants & Yankees fan and the wife is a Pats & Sox fan. 😉

        1. It has at times, but he’s starting to drift more into being a Boston / New England fan. 😉

  13. Kind of a boring game, but it’s good to see the Pats finding so many different ways to win games. AFC East Champs and a first round bye yet again!

  14. Announcement coming just in time for Christmas, a holiday gift of sorts for 2017 and beyond. 🙂

    Stay tuned!

  15. Teleconnectors aren’t too favorable for snow and cold. PNA, NAO, AO, and EPO dont favor cold and snow. I’m sure we’ll have chances, it’s almost January, but the overall look isnt great for sustained deep cold and snow. The fear for snow enthusiasts is that even if the PV weakens and teleconnectors become more favorable, it could be later in the winter when climo starts to move toward spring. Long way to go. Winter solstice hasn’t even occurred yet.
