A bit of positive news is the decoupling between hospitalizations and ICU usage/deaths. This doesn’t mean that ICU usage and deaths are not increasing, because they are. BUT, the increase in ICU usage/deaths is lower – flatter slope – than hospitalizations. We see this pattern for the BA.4/BA.5 in many countries. This doesn’t make it a mild sub-variant. It just means that all that immunity we’ve been building up is preventing to some degree the most severe outcomes. https://twitter.com/EricTopol/status/1546133666304184321
Thanks Joshua. Will this bode better for us for the fall numbers, assuming it continues in this direction?
Thanks. Still in the heart of it. Hopefully it gets better from here :).
Sorry to hear it’s lasting this long. Hope you’ve crested and are on the downside.
Thanks TK.
Good question, Philip. The answer depends in part on how evasive BA.2.75 is – or other sub-variants/variants. My guess is that regardless of which other sub-variant or variant comes our way our cumulative immunity will help somewhat against severe disease. So, the trend referred to above will likely hold. Still, we don’t want to have the high numbers of hospitalizations overall. Also, the deaths number is still quite elevated. It would be good to see that go down.
