DAYS 1-5 (AUGUST 5-9)
A thick plume of Canadian wildfire smoke continues today but the trend will be to thin from northeast to southwest starting today and continuing Wednesday, so that the smoke should be much thinner beyond midweek. There will be a fair amount of high cloudiness in the sky too today into Wednesday, which will also filter the sun each day. Otherwise, high pressure dominates our weather during the next 5 days. Only the remains of a weak frontal boundary and a little instability / orographic lift can pop a few isolated showers and thunderstorms in the hilly terrain of southwestern NH and central MA Wednesday afternoon, otherwise we’re basically free of rain threats for this forecast period. Initially, temperatures are held back a bit by the center of high pressure being to our north, but with time, it sinks southward and a warm-up becomes more noticeable.
TODAY: Sun filtered to dimmed by high clouds and high altitude smoke. Highs 78-85, cooler coastal areas. Dew point 60+. Wind N to E up to 10 MPH.
TONIGHT: Lots of high clouds and additional smoke aloft. Patchy ground fog late. Lows 61-68. Dew point 60+. Wind NE to variable under 10 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Limited sun with high clouds but smoke aloft thins out. Developing convective clouds afternoon with isolated showers and thunderstorms possible in the hills of southwestern NH and central MA. Highs 76-83, cooler coastal areas. Dew point 60+. Wind E up to 10 MPH.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Patchy fog / low clouds. Lows 61-68. Dew point near 60+. Wind E to variable under 10 MPH.
THURSDAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Highs 78-85, cooler some coastal areas. Dew point 60+. Wind variable up to 10 MPH with coastal sea breezes.
THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Patchy fog. Lows 61-68. Dew point 60+. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.
FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 80-87, cooler some coastal areas. Dew point 60+. Wind variable up to 10 MPH with coastal sea breezes.
FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Patchy fog. Lows 61-68. Dew point 60+. Wind S up to 10 MPH.
SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 81-88, cooler Cape Cod / South Coast. Dew point near 60+. Wind S up to 10 MPH.
DAYS 6-10 (AUGUST 10-14)
High pressure east of New England allows a more established but weak southerly air flow, while low pressure well to the south should stay there. This pattern allows for warm to hot weather with a slightly increased chance of pop-up showers and thunderstorms, which can be enhanced if a disturbance makes it our way from the west (may happen later period).
DAYS 11-15 (AUGUST 15-19)
No significant changes to the pattern establishing in the previous period. Overall pattern features high pressure off the East coast, promoting warmer, more humid weather with a slightly increased chance of showers and thunderstorms with more moisture moving up from the south, potentially enhanced by any disturbances moving through from the west.
Thanks TK. Pretty straightforward forecast for the near future.
Yup, pretty much.
Latest GFS takes out a swath from NC to Washington DC.
The amusement continues…
The thing that model is best for is creating random scripts for bad hurricane b-movies.
Now I have to look
Ha ha ha right. That will happen.
Good morning and thank you TK. So much smoke yesterday that we had to close the windows. We could smell smoke. That’s pretty bad.
Thanks TK
From Meteorologist Steve DiMartino
Can DOGE just kill the GFS and leave everyone else alone?
That’s pretty funny.
Well played
Thanks, TK.
The smoke is awful out there. If those hazy days of summer in the 50’s were caused by smoke wouldn’t we have smelled it?
Also, I, like most evryone else, has an android phone. But I only use it when going out. I still like using a land-line phone. I also use an old desk-top computer which is slowly wearing down. But my android phone, I notice has been acting a bit crazy lately.
Quesion – what is Wordle and where do you find it? Is it an app on android phones?
Wordle is a game that was written by an individual, became wildly popular, and was purchased by the NY Times:
https://www.nytimes.com/games/wordle/index.html
Thanks, SClarke, I may try to subscribe and log in. Will probably try on my desktop and android, too, in case my old desktop gets cranky, as it has been at times lately.
Would love to have you join us. I don’t think I subscribe but I’ve played so long that I forget. I know I don’t pay anything.
I’m not subscribed.
Speaking of Wordle….
Took me 6 guesses again today. Thought I had it in 3, but my 3rd guess was incorrect but gave me the first 4 letters correct. Now I had a bunch of choices. I went through them and Wordle was not happy until my 6th guess when I made the correct choice. I guess Wordle doesn’t choose the same words I would choose. 🙂 🙂 🙂
I don’t feel like I failed today. Not at all. Unlike some days. 🙂
6 also 🙂
It’s a fail for me. Last letter eluded me
I didn’t have the last four till my fourth guess. I chose the wrong last letter for five snd six.
That happened to me, only I chose the wrong word on guess 3 which revealed the 1st 4 letters correct (I thought for sure I solved it in 3!!!!!) and then I selected
the wrong word for guess 4 and 5 and finally selected the correct word on guess 6.
I had nothing on the first guess, but it eliminated lots of possibilities. I got it in 3.
Awesome. To me that is really a two
🙂
Wow ! Nice !!
Thanks, TK!
Thanks, TK.
After a fairly rainy day yesterday (intermittent with a couple of heavier showers), today feels like a nice say in late September in Boston. Breezy, coolish this morning (52F and sunny) and now 69F and partly cloudy.
The playlist here in London at a Waterstone’s on Gower Street is awesome. They all are in Britain: Cat Stevens, Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Supertramp, Elton John.
I guess it helps when you’re a country that produces a staggering number (disproportionate relative to the size of the population is an understatement) of musicians, pop artists, and rock bands.
And now Down by the Waterline by Dire Straits (it’s from their masterful debut album in 1978 – my two favorite debut albums are The Cars and Dire Straits; both are from 1978).
Great music and glad your getting weather you like.
Thank you TK!
Thanks TK !
Thank you, TK!
The tropical Atlantic appears to be slowly heating up.
We shall see.

On the right of the loop at the African coast and just southeast of the Cape Verde Islands, I think a tropical wave can be seen moving just offshore.
At this angle, it’s tough, but I think it has some circulation.
But, its thunderstorms are waning.
Anyway, I think the 06z and 18z GFS without full data keep making this thing way more than it is, while the 00z and 12z GFS with more data haven’t reacted to it as much.
https://www.wunderground.com/maps/satellite/infrared/africa
Here’s weather underground’s Africa satellite where that wave leaving the coast as well as others spaced out for down the road can be seen.
Curious to see what, if anything, the 12Z euro and GFS have to say. 🙂
Thanks, TK.
Thanks TK. I have to do a run today as part of my training for a half marathon in november. Looks like it will be on a treadmill.
So far, the 12z ICON and GFS have an impressive 594 dm (500 mb) ridge built overhead by very early next weekend.
Hot but the light wind field may help the immediate coastline a bit with feeble seabreezes.

Acknowledging as pointed out by TK, SAK and others that an op runs take on a tropical is useless until you have a center, the 12z GFS does identify a wave in the central Atlantic.
We’ll be amused and see what it does with it.

850 mb temp anomalies.
This would be the complete opposite of last August.
Last year, there was an omega block across northern Canada. Big 500 mb high pressure in northern Canada with a suppressed jet stream south of it across the US. Northern Canada had all the red, above normal 850 mb temps with the US all colored in blue.
If this verifies, complete opposite with generally lower than avg 500 mb heights in northern Canada and the mid latitude jet stream sitting around 55-60N latitude keeping most of the US in very warm to hot conditions.
Taking the over on avg August temps. Maybe well above average.
shhhhh
I am enjoying the break this week but know very well summer is not done.
It can still be hot Columbus Day weekend. Summers don’t end as quickly as they used to.
Columbus Day can take place from Oct 8 through 14. It’s only been 90 in Boston once during that time frame (1956). It’s been as warm as 88 twice, once in 1933 and once in the 1800s. It really doesn’t get hot on Columbus Day weekend and summers don’t really end later than they used to, if you look at the fact the majority of the record highs for that time period are prior to 1960.
It can be very warm, at times, but that’s not unusual for Autumn, given that it’s a warmer season than Spring in New England.
It CAN get hot on Labor Day Weekend, as well as Memorial Day Weekend (less common than Labor Day Weekend).
A non-weather post that I wanted to share…
My son delivered this tribute to his grandmother at my mom’s funeral service last week.
“My grandmother made the most amazing and perfect chicken noodle soup. As a young child, that was one of the first truths in life that became self-evident to me. As I grew up, I was so lucky to have the chance to spend my first quarter century learning many more truths of life from her, but after all these years, one question still floated in the back of my mind: what was her secret to making that soup? Of course, when I asked, she showed that side of humility, insisting there wasn’t anything special that went into it.
Like that soup, the many memories I have of her are full of warmth, brightness, and most of all, color. Every year, come sunshine, rain, or storm, she put so much into bringing that color to the world. Dozens of flower vases, with a flower for every season. Hundreds of colored candles, on display around the house. Thousands of decorations, many of them gifts from friends, many of them memories of her family. Photo frames in every room of the family she came from, and the family she worked to build. There are so many of us are smiling in those pictures. She was the kind of person to effortlessly put a smile on your face. She had, herself, the most beautiful smile. Through her tireless dedication, she had a way of making a house into a home. She had a way of making you feel at home. Now, she comes home to many smiling faces awaiting her, many fellow friends, her siblings, her husband, her son. “Welcome home.”
I think I better understand what it was I was feeling when I sat in her kitchen, sharing a bowl of soup with her. She spent hours preparing, making, cooking, all for the moment we’d get to share together that evening. Her radiance was embodied in this ever-burning commitment to those she loved. That was, after all, her secret ingredient to life’s joy, which she kept no secret from those who had the blessing of knowing her. In the afterimage of her inspiration, she will be remembered in every memory we work to share joy with our own. We will carry her in our hearts, and our hearts will be full with color. We will strive to share that color with our loved ones as she did for us.
After all your life of work, you may finally take your rest.
May you rest in peace.”
Incredible, Brian. What a beautiful tribute. Thank you for sharing.
Wow, what a great job by your son. Beautifully written.
Really really hard to see through tears. What an amazing tribute to your mom from her grandson. You can literally feel the love in every word
So well written and delivers a story of a wonderful human being.
Awesome job Nate and a great tribute to his grandmother!
Yesterday’s Euro had a compact hurricane over Jamaica the day we are scheduled to leave on 8/17.
The 18z GFS says our problems will be with landing, not taking off 🙂
