Not a great deal of change from the previous post , so just a quick update here, and a new forecast to tweak timing.

A frontal boundary along the East Coast and tropical moisture riding up along this front means that we are in for a few unsettled days today into the weekend. The wettest weather is expected this morning and for a good portion of Friday. We may catch a break for at least part of the weekend as much of the wet weather may shift to the east and be mostly just off the coast Saturday. Just enough drier air may work in on Sunday for partial sun, but we will not be able to rule out a shower threat completely if any sun does pop out.

A more organized low pressure system in upper levels and a couple disturbances at the surface spell out a greater chance of rain for the beginning of next week.

The tropics have become a little more active again, with Tropical Storm Ophelia located far east of the Caribbean and moving to the west. This system may threaten the northeastern Caribbean Islands sometime over the coming weekend. Ophelia is many days away from being any possible concern to Bermuda or the US East Coast.

The muggies are making a comeback, and will not be in a hurry to leave. The disturbance that brought the showers in today, more showers than I anticipated, is also responsible for bringing in the humidity. High pressure offshore will pump warmer air in for Wednesday, with continued humidity. A frontal system will move eastward into the region Wednesday night and Thursday, but stall in the region for a couple days, causing unsettled weather through Saturday. A sliver of high pressure may improve the weather for Sunday. Looking into next week – an unsettled weather pattern may end up the rule yet again. More later…

Today was very likely the nicest day of the week. The next fair weather day, Wednesday, will be warm but also rather humid. In between, a frontal system crossing the region Tuesday will produce a few showers, but this system will be weakening, so shower chances are greatest west of Boston, and less from Boston southeastward toward Cape Cod. Another frontal system will move into the region Thursday, then stall along the East Coast, with a low pressure area forming along it, holding unsettled weather in through at least Friday, and probably for a portion of the weekend as well.

After a chilly finish to this week, the upcoming week will feature above normal temperatures as high pressure builds off the East Coast and dominates the weather through midweek. It will still be a bit cool on Monday to start the week as a cool onshore flow of air continues. A weakening frontal system will try to push into the region Tuesday, but will fall apart up against high pressure, and produce more in the way of clouds rather than any rain threat. We’ll have to wait for a second low pressure and frontal system which will move slowly west to east across the region Thursday and Friday, with unsettled weather at that time. It looks like a new push of dry air, but this time mild rather than chilly, will arrive in time for next weekend!

Today was transition day for the Boston area. And upside down day, in which the highest temperatures took place in the late morning to early afternoon hours, showers and thunderstorms popped up, and since then temperatures have fallen and humidity is leaving. You can thank a cold front for this change. It’s sliding offshore now, and after some scattered showers behind it end from west to east later this evening, a clearing sky will follow, temperatures will continue to drop, and by morning it will feel more like October than mid September.

High pressure building into the region behind this departing front is about to bring us several days of very nice weather, starting out quite cool Friday into the weekend before moderating a little by early next week. Saturday may feature some cloudiness as an upper level disturbance moves through from west to east. The next threat of showers comes around the middle of next week, but we won’t worry about that now.

The tropics are quieter, though we still have Hurricane Maria, which is intensifying slightly as it accelerates north to northeast well offshore of the US East Coast. Newfoundland, Canada, may be clipped by this system, hence a Tropical Storm warning and Hurricane Watch for that region.

The forecast for the Boston area…

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy with a few showers to start, ending west to east by 11PM, followed by clearing west to east overnight. Turning much cooler! Low by morning 42-47. Wind NW 5-15 MPH with a few gusts toward 20 MPH which may actually produce a tiny bit of a wind chill if you happen to be outside!

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny – few cumulus clouds. Cool & crisp. High 60-65. Wind NW 10-15 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Clear then some high clouds. Chilly. A few patches of frost possible in low lying areas away from Boston and the coast. A layer of ground fog may form in valleys, swamps, and bogs.  Low 39-44 except 44-49 urban centers. Wind diminishing to calm.

The 3-day stretch of summery weather continued today, with one more to go, thanks to high pressure offshore and a southwesterly flow of air. Late this week, we’ll have the feel of Fall, as high pressure builds out of Canada and sends a much cooler air mass into the region. Transition day on Thursday will be marked by showers as a cold front slowly crosses the region. Much of the shower activity will occur behind the front this time. I’m not expected an outbreak of thunderstorms ahead of the front, just a slight chance of a few pop up storms Wednesday afternoon mainly far to the west of the Boston area.

High pressure will build offshore through Wednesday, sending warm, more humid air into New England. A cold front will move across the region late Wednesday and early Thursday, setting off scattered showers and thunderstorms, then introducing a much cooler air mass from Canada at the end of the week.

It’s pretty straightforward this week, ladies and gentlemen. Summer warmth dominates the first half of the week, Fall coolness the 2nd half, with a few showers possible late Monday as warm air becomes more established, and showers/thunderstorms possible Wednesday as the leading edge of the cooler air bumps into the warm air that will be in place.  Early call on next weekend: fabulous start, and possibly all the way through, but we may need to watch moisture and developing low pressure to our south for late in the weekend or early the following week.

In the tropics, Maria will track between Bermuda and the US East Coast, as a tropical storm or minimal hurricane, later this week. Only some of the larger swells may impact the coastline, like with Katia this past week.

The active late Summer / early meteorological Fall weather pattern continues…

Hurricane Katia made its closest pass to New England and is now heading out to sea, racing into the North Atlantic. She is responsible for dragging drier air into the region, scouring out the low clouds and fog that started the day. You probably noticed filtered sunshine even after the low clouds were gone. That was a shield of high clouds around the outer edge of Katia. Even though we were not directly impacted by her, she continues to send large waves into coastal areas. These will continue into Saturday before subsiding, but should not cause major problems, just some minor splash-over flooding in areas prone to it. Elsewhere in the tropics, Tropical Storm Maria will track northwestward across the eastern Caribbean into the weekend, with some heavy rain and gusty winds. Tropical Storm Nate is expected to become a hurricane in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico and head toward the eastern coast of Mexico this weekend. It is not expected to impact the US.

Closer to home, high pressure will build north of New England this weekend while an old frontal boundary sits just south of New England. This set-up will mean cooling temperatures, most sun north of Boston, and most clouds to the south over the weekend.

High pressure is expected to shift to the south and east, building off the coast, and bringing a return to summertime temperatures for the first half of next week…

Lots going on in the weather department these days: Irene not long ago, flooding resulting from it in western New England, tree damage eastern areas. Other heavy rain episodes resulting in additional flooding, including in some eastern areas the last few days, associated with the remains of Lee. The big deluge for the Boston area was this morning and if you were in the Boston area, you knew it. It caught me a bit off-guard, since I didn’t forecast it quite that heavy. So if you were stuck in it, and not as prepared as you could have been based on my forecast, sorry! Hope you keep coming back to read anyway. I have my share of forecast misses, and this was one of them.

What’s coming up? We are about at the end of the unsettled stretch, but it will be a little slow to improve through Friday as I think we may still see a fair amount of cloudiness through Friday. In fact, clouds may be stubborn over far southern New England for much of the weekend as high pressure builds north of the region and a disturbance and old frontal system sits just to the south of the region. We may have a return to a more summery feel by early next week as high pressure slips to the south of us and sends warmer southwesterly winds in.

Katia? No hurricane here, but the storm has stirred up large waves and big ocean swells offshore which are already affecting the coastline, and will continue to do so through Friday, and possibly into the weekend, before subsiding. There may not be a great deal of calming of the ocean as yet another tropical system (Maria) is out in the Atlantic already stirring up the waters once again. We’ll talk more about Maria’s possible path in future posts. And don’t forget about Nate in the Gulf of Mexico (no immediate impact on the US).
