A windy and cool Monday as the pressure gradient between a deepening low in eastern Canada and high pressure to the west remains fairly strong. Cold air aloft will still allow for some cloud development, though there will also be sunshine. A very chilly night is upcoming but I believe the wind may stay active enough and the air dry enough to prevent frost in all but the most sheltered valley locations. A wave of low pressure will pass south of the region early Wednesday, and will bring at least some cloudiness into the region later Tuesday into Wednesday, and perhaps a period of rain, which will favor southern MA southward. High pressure builds in later in the week with fabulous spring weather.

A split weekend with warmth and a bit of humidity today, then a cool and gusty Sunday. In between, the second frontal passage in as many nights will bring a couple bands of showers and even a few thunderstorms, with all activity occurring between dark and dawn. It will be a great weekend for outdoor activities, though a limiting factor on Sunday for some activities will be some potent wind gusts, so keep this in mind when planning. Another cool and breezy day will occur Monday, followed by a tranquil Tuesday. A system approaching from the west will bring at least cloudiness and potentially some shower activity by Wednesday.

High pressure dominates today and it warms up nicely over the interior while the coast is modified by a sea breeze, and sunshine will be in full control as it was yesterday. A broad low pressure trough will pass through from west to east Friday through Monday, but it still appears that rainfall will be limited to 2 frontal passages, the first late Friday and Friday night, and the second Saturday night through the early hours of Sunday. This will leave much of the weekend rain-free. Lingering cold air aloft on the trough’s back side may still cause a few very light showers but at least some clouds on Monday. The air mass change will be quite evident between Saturday (which will be 70+ in most areas), and Sunday-Monday, which will struggle to reach 60 in many areas.

Broad but disorganized high pressure will dominate through Thursday, varying its center from southwest of southern New England today to north of New England Wednesday to southeast of New England Thursday. These varying positions of the center of high pressure will mean different wind directions daily, and this will have some impact on temperatures. On Friday, an approaching front from the west will bring cloudiness and an eventual shower threat. Most of this activity may occur Friday night and then get out of the day for a decent daytime Saturday between disturbances departing to the east and approaching from the west, the second of which would bring another round of showers Saturday night.

Yes, the pattern is still in blocking-mode the next few days, but we’ve managed to get back to the fair weather side of the block, as we were in April. Other than a disturbance aloft passing by today and causing some clouds and a few isolated showers that should be mostly north of the forecast area, high pressure will generally be in control with fair weather through the middle of the week. I’m going to lean to the optimistic side and forecast the fair weather including a warming trend through Thursday. By Friday, an approaching front from the west should at least bring cloudiness and probably a shower threat.
